Making Ceramic Dessert Bowls with Elevated Foot
Просмотров 7 тыс.9 месяцев назад
I share my process of making ceramic footed bowls on the pottery wheel, from throwing to trimming. They’ve been a favourite of mine to make lately, such an enjoyable making process that’s part throwing and part sculpting. I’ve named them Nymphae coupes (more on that in the video). This is a different type of video than what I’ve shared before, let me know what you think. I really enjoyed making...

Studio Tour - Where I do ceramics at home in Toronto
Your curation is amazing! 😮 Thank you so much! it made me discover so many new creators. Keep it up ✨
Issey, this video was beautiful! I love the way you talk about ceramics/art/artists. I’m sure it was a lot of work to edit together, but I would eat up more videos where you just chat about ceramics/art that you love.
Firstly, what a gorgeous background. And what a well thought through list. Loved that it was international. When will your pottery be available???
Working on it! 😏 I’ll make sure to update you guys here when I get close to a shop update 🫶🏼
So fun! How do I write the name of the french painting shop?
It’s Drouot, i linked it in the description too. I’ll keep in mind to write the names in the video next time 😅
ahhh Issey you are so sweet, I started this video excited to see your recommendations and am so honoured to be included :-) thank you so much! <3
😘😘 of course!! I love my mug!
love yourhaircut
Thank you! Truly amazing recs!
Thank you 🥰🥰
Absolutely loved the video! I'm not sure if they qualify as smaller brands but i have a few favourites from Portugal (i think if you just google these names and add Portugal you can find them): Ecolã (wool clothing) ISTO (minimalist quality clothing extra super transparent - not the clothing, the brand - you can know where everything comes from and how much (most) things cost) Inusitado (stationary) There's a bunch more, but i cant remember any of them right now. Okay, bye
Ooh will check these out! Thanks for sharing 💕
You also got the portuguese brand Fairly Normal :)
aw, i left a comment with some small makers i love but i think youtube suppressed it. might be happening to others? either way i appreciate such a thorough list!
Oh no! I haven’t seen any of the suppressed comments on my end, that’s a bummer ☹️
Thank you for sharing these small artists (like me too)! Also, I didn’t realize you were on IG
okay first off holy heck. the framing, set pieces, colour and lighting of this video are stunning 😍 - okay back to the gift giving guide :)
Hehe 😉🥰🥰 glad you noticed those little details!
Where do you wedge out how do you process your reclaimed clay?
I wedge on a piece of wood on the floor, I hold the piece of wood down with my knees to prevent it from sliding. Not the best for posture for sure, but I don’t have a table option in the tiny space. As for reclaiming, I fill my buckets until they’re full enough, then I let the clay dry on plaster boards on the shelf (I put some little wooden feet under the plaster boards to allow for air circulation underneath). When dried I wedge the clay down on my knees on my floor wedging board 😅
Issey, I just watched a video by Willem Verbeeck (a photographer I follow here on RUclips), titled *Inside Danny D's Stunning New Los Angeles Pottery Studio* and INSTANTLY thought of your studio, as his space is very similar to yours. I'm pretty sure by now, you've settled on a layout, but thought I'd still share, just in case something inspired you from the video. Definitely worth a watch and I think you will enjoy it. <3
I just watched it too! It’s SOOO good! What the heck!! How did he do it? Haha It’s giving very “Bode” meets “vintage” store, love it. And love Willem, big fan of his. I love Danny D’s staining on the plywood, I didn’t know staining plywood could look so good and even! I always heard it’d end up blotchy. I was just planning on incorporating wood in the studio just this week, and looking up local wood options. Thank you for thinking of my little studio though haha I feel like mine pale’s in comparison 😅😊❤️ love that you sent me this
@@issey-roquet Small world!! Love Willem's videos too. Danny's studio is lovely, as is yours. I think you can easily incorporate some of the ideas and I think your idea of adding some wood into the space will look gorgeous and give it some extra warmth. Your studio definitely does NOT pale in comparison. If anything, there's a lot more natural light, which I love. ❤
@ aw thanks! 😊🫶🏼

Congratulations on your first sponsor🎉. Your videos are so informative and inspiring. Thank you 🌸😊
Thank you! Glad to hear it’s helpful 😊🫶🏼
I love your videos! 🥰 Do you use an app to record your voice with your phone or an external microphone? Because the sound quality is soo good! If you use any app would you like to let me know the name? :)
Hi! I just use the Voice Memos app that comes with an iPhone ☺️ it does sound surprisingly really good, especially in this still very echoey studio
I love watching the process of how you slowly build the space, it feels very realistic. And I have to say, I've seen multiple Milanote sponsored videos, but this was the first time I've seen what it could actually do for me / how I could use it - I think you integrated it nicely and I will definitely check it out! Congrats on the first sponsor as well :)
Thank you 😊😊❤️
Looking back when I saw your video in a mini studio under the stairs, and now your studio is growing bigger in different place. Woah That's Amazing Issey ❤ 🎉
Haha thank you! It is quite crazy to think about it 🥲❤️ I did love that tiny little studio… even though it really hurt my back haha
@@issey-roquet 🤗, 😄, I love it too ❤. For me it's so cool that you can survive in that condition and keep working. And your back pain is paid off with this spacious place, Yay 💃💃
Good music
Beautiful space! Consider moving everything to the center of the room. Create stations or zones. Your light is only in the front and back, then consider utilizing the light to showcase your pottery on one side of the storefront and set up your wheel on the other side for the direct light. The passers-by people will see you making the pottery and will be able to see how they can use your pottery with a vignette on the other side of the storefront window.
Great to see you pop up on my feed again, finally! Amazing seeing the development of the studio! Sorry if you've mentioned this somewhere in another video - I understand if it's not something you want to go into - but can you share details on the costs and funding? Are you renting it or did you buy the unit? What do the overheads look like and how are you covering them until you get your production up and running?
@@C33Fernandez I haven’t gone over this yet, and maybe eventually I will. I’m still learning as I go, as this is all still new to me. And I’ve made many mistakes that have cost a lot - I’m still resolving some unfortunate costly issues as we speak that I haven’t talked about here. I was fortunate enough to be able to buy the abandoned unit, in order to renovate it from scratch. And I’ll probably have to not give myself a salary for the next year as I get production up and running, and reinvest into the studio. Maybe once I’m able to take a step back and look at the costs from a different perspective, once it doesn’t stress me as much as it is right now, I’ll be able to speak about it more and share what I’ve learned.
@@issey-roquet I completely understand. I'm sure you'll get through it and then maybe you can feel free to look back and reflect. Sometimes you have to get your head down and clean your plate as I like to say. That said, I hope you're coping with it alright. I can understand how difficult it can be, I work for a micro-practice myself. All in all, you're still living a dream, so congratulations! I look forward to seeing more
It is a beautiful space and your new pieces are beautiful too. Watching the video, the small flashes of pure white, denim/indigo blue and green stood out as a visual contrast to the overall rich red/brown and cream, although they were on things that aren't of the quality of materials that you are choosing for the space (e.g. stool frame and seat, your jeans, a plant). Some sheer white linen as a drop curtain would lift the overall heaviness, I think, and the striped fabrics you were trying on your mood board could introduce some highlights in rich blues and greens. Unasked for advice, but it is what stood out for me visually watching the video. Thank you for sharing your lovely space and work, and I appreciate the gentle pace and contemplative shots of the wheel work.
Glad you noticed the flashes of indigo sprinkled here and there. I’ve been thinking of introducing more indigo, but was worried it was clashing too much with the rest. Definitely agree with you that overall the space needs more visual contrast with other colours. The monstera at the back really pops, I’m definitely thinking of bringing in more plants. Will definitely keep your suggestions in mind! Thank you 😊
Oh cool, I also use Vicente Diez clay, Gres BG for handbuilding and NT for throwing typically! The space looks beautiful!
Do you ever run into any issues with NT clay’s roughness against your fingers on the wheel?
@@issey-roquet it's not been an issue for me so far
@@julians4094 ok thanks, good to know. When I work with the NT clay, the chamote eventually scratches the skin on my finger tips until it becomes too painful to throw. I think I might not be using enough water and applying too much pressure… I need to keep practicing with it to get used to it probably
friendly unwarranted suggestions: i think lightweight linen to break up the space would help a lot! something that immediately jumped out at me was how bottom heavy the space is. the walls from about 2/3rds up are totally bare minus the brick detailing and all of the furniture is around waist high and lower which could contribute to that cluttery feeling, like sediments settling at the bottom. i don't know what you could move higher (your planned shelves?) but if some furniture could be moved up/taller so that the space beneath can be bare/open it can help the flow. your inspo boards have a lot of windows taking up higher wall space which you can't help but for sure the storage and visual breaks (like the linen) - even a tall but slender tree, or a tall lamp/high mounted sconce for the dark center. the new clay is fun. :-) love how warm the space is.
Totally agree with all of this! Thank you for all the great suggestions. I was kind of feeling all of this but couldn’t put words to it, and you expressed it all so eloquently. The large shelf was definitely supposed to be a 3m tall piece of furniture that I was hoping to build around, but it’s over 6 months late. I’m taking the delay as an opportunity to rethink it more. And in the mean time I want to find other solutions to give height and lightness to the space. I was thinking of replacing the lace curtains at the front doors and hanging really long pieces of coloured fabric instead. And adding taller plants is definitely on my list 😉 Thanks again for all the suggestions! I really appreciate it when you guys chime in 😊😊 Makes it feel like we’re in a small community 💕
Hello issey, I do think that a light linen curtain could be helpful to seperate the storage/kitchen area from the creative working area, and help make the space feel less long by visually breaking it into two separate spaces without blocking the light or anything. I do think a colorful linen one like the one on your board would feat really nicely, or even maybe a pojagi curtain could look really nice. I love following your journey and witnessing the evolution of this space of yours ❤
Thank you! Yeah I'm really considering the curtain idea to separate the space. I tried doing that with the dark table, setting perpendicular as a space separator, but it looked too odd breaking the space like that. But something light like a curtain might work better
Welcome back! We really only know how we truly feel about a space once we live and spend time in it, right? I really liked the rearrangement, and your philosophy to take your time to fail and reconnect with clay. Have a nice weekend! <3
Issey, your eye for design is so lovely. I am setting up my first home studio and have felt so creatively inspired watching your videos. Thank you for sharing! I love to see your thought processes and the careful progress you’re making with your studio.

I love how you've captured the essence of working with pottery. It's a feeling that's hard to describe, but you've managed to do it so beautifully.
Thank you so much! Means a lot 🥰
A little curtain system in front of your clay storage area could be an idea for the next space. Thanks for sharing.
Hola Issey! Thank you for sharing beautiful content. I really like your editing style! Would you please share your camera model, filters and etc? Thanks a lot!
Hola! I use fujifilm xs20 and a 27mm lens with a tiffen glimmerglass filter on it :)
Hola, Issey! Just stumbled upon your channel, great content. I really liked the looks of that working table, can you please share where you got it from, model, etc.? Thanks!
Hola! I believe it’s a galvanized work table from Simonwork. It seems like lots of hardware stores in Europe carry work tables or “bancos de trabajo” similar to these (Leroy, Bauhaus, etc). They offer different wooden tops to go on top of an MDF surface. I wouldn’t recommend the basic plywood option they offer though, it’s pretty cheap plywood. If you’d like plywood, I’d get a nicer one cut to size from the hardware store. Hope this helps!
@@issey-roquet Thanks a lot!

been saving the last vid till a new one comes out and the place is coming along nicely. the tiled kitchenette looks so lovely with the raw sink. excited to see the space grow and fill with pieces the music is so calming in this one, all the best :)
Oh, sheer line curtains would be nice, too. Or maybe lower those lace panels so they don't look so skimpy :) And if you don't cut the vintage lace you can -use it to drape along the top :)
Wow ❤

The world as we know it will disappear if people just go online and purchase all-I-need-hauls. There is magic in slowing discovering what you need next and not buying all at once, and also in buying directly in person to someone, as you said not everything is online, from artists to makers to antique dealers. Your curtains are lovely. ❤
Yes! And the same applies to decorating / organizing the studio space - it needs slow discovering what you need next to become a genuine, functional and beautiful space ❤️
Love zelliges. I live in Marseille and have them in my bathroom ❤ love your choice of color

if you need a direction to head in for more lacey curtain ideas, you should look up filet crochet :-) people are definitely still making stuff like that and you can even make it yourself with your own designs to specific dimensions
Ooooh 👀
Hi! Its a beautiful space. That red clay is very nice, what type/ brand of clay is?? Im also in Spain, so I want to buy it to test it. Thank you :)
Hola! It’s from Vicente Diez, they’re based out of Manises. It’s called Gres NT Rojo
thank you :)
@@mieles2.0 I’m testing the medium gres, they say it’s usable on the wheel, but it’s pretty rough on my fingers on the wheel after a while. It’s great for sculptural work, and trimming through it is really nice. But I’d recommend trying the fine gres if you’re hoping to use it on the wheel 😊
@@issey-roquet Thank you for the advice and the info ;)
