    1.Make sure you play things right when you play them. Break things into smaller chunks, slower than usual. 2. Focus on the parts that actually need work. 3. Make sure you engage with the material. 4. Be clear on where you are headed.

    The correct way to do this to get actual results is to breathe in fully through the nose until you’ve met your lung capacity, then take another quick breath in. Very very slow release of the air replenishes axon clusters of receptors to assist in cognition

    I used to record my playing one out of every two weeks to get feedback from my teacher, and I do it now also for myself. But each time I fall in an otherwise very unprobable sequence of false starts and discarded half takes. This is the first time I find that's a profitable situation, instead of a problematic one in which I need to heal my attitude towards (or, in other words, this is my first hint on how to address this, by taking all this in a positive way). Thanks!

    Great tips and I recognize all of them. Since my retirement I have all the time to practice. Almost every day and my instrument is all set up to get going immediately without hindering anyone. The most valuable tip for me it to break “the project” into small pieces, chunks as Mark calls them. What I did not hear in this video (I hope I did not miss it), is to get it in your head first. That insight helped me a lot.

    Mark, how does this work when you are a live guitarist that is shredding leads to big crowds? I feel like if i looked at the crowd; I would lose it even more. Can you give an example of how you would do this while on stage holding your guitar?

    • @juan_ta
      @juan_ta Месяц назад

      I would tell you to follow his advice to practice it anywhere. It will get you used to it and aware of how that would feel in your situation on stage. (I guess I would be unfocusing a bit before those situations you describe, but just check it yourself anywhere).

    The thing is this - for me - I once played a week with a former Jazz Messenger - who assumed that I knew all that repertoire. I didn’t. It’s a ‘niche’ repertoire too. I was embarrassed by my playing. And I grew to hate him. He never ‘accommodated’ me at all. I struggled but I made it eventually. A huge learning curve for me. He was a b*****d. A very well known messenger.

    Monk will forever remain a ‘mystique’. Never truly understood - yet such a pivotal giant in bebop music. Not all players liked him necessarily. Miles for instance . . . .

    i hate putting pressure on myself and reacting negatively. it takes away the fun. what i do is play music i make or learn to play a cover of a song i like. when im learning it it's fun. but when i go to record it all of a sudden there's tension like ok NOW WERE RECORDING DON'T screw up. and it clouds my mind. i'm not fully there like wheni was ok with making mistakes. i need to implement the mindset of okness when im not recording to when i am. thanks u made alot of sense.

    My pianist friend shared that she rewarded herself for memorizing a few measures at a time by pouring M&Ms out onto the piano top. She popped a couple each time she was successful. That was in 1963 as a 12 year old, prior to any knowledge about reinforcement.

    Glad I rediscovered this video. I tried it out yesterday, using this idea after each "minitask" on my daily list, and got lots of stuff done. To make it interesting, I used "Wheel Decide" to make a spinner that randomly selects between 6 choices... 3 are in the "no rewards" side (1. nothing, 2. do 10 squats, 3. spend 3 mins tidying up) and 3 are on the reward side (1. watch something on my RUclips queue, 2. have a cup of tea/coffee, 3. venture into the cursed lands of Twitter). Might change the last one about Twitter as it's not that compelling. Anyway it might be partly placebo effect, but I found it fun, and ended up doing more work than expected (I kept rolling "nothing", and really wanted a cup of tea).
