An unworthy, ordinary saint/sinner on mission to encourage his weary brothers and sisters to rest in The worthy Christ and The extraordinary Gospel.
No longer aligning with pietistic Christianity (esp. the separatist fundamentalist stripe) and pre-mil dispensationalism as I (Justin) did from 2009-2020, the content of this channel chronicles [imperfect] thoughts which reflect what I'm learning on my journey into the world of reformed theology and doctrine. My journey began in March 2020 while reading "A Pilgrim's Guide to Rest," a book written by the members of OG Theocast.
Categorically, I'm a reformed Baptist and affirm the 1689 London Baptist Confession. Please note that I am not a counselor, a church elder, or a pastor.

How do I know? | Reclaiming Rest
"How do I know?..."
Justin believes that is the most commonly-asked question among professing Christians today.
And it's usually followed by something specific.
"...I'm a Christian?"
"...I'm saved?"
"...I'm elect?"
"...my faith is genuine?"
"...that I'm not deceived?"
Justin also believes that he can help his brothers and sisters with that question.

Inconsistency and 1 Timothy 2:12 | Reclaiming Rest

I ask that regardless of your perspective, you listen with an open mind. I ask that you not assume things before, during, or after listening. I ask that you take time to process what I say. Sisters in Christ, I recorded this especially for you. I believe it's high time that Christians better understand a statement which Paul wrote to Timothy. It is one of Scripture's most controversial verses. ...
worldly vs. godly grief | Reclaiming Rest

2 Corinthians 7. Worldly grief. Godly grief. Did Paul mean for professing Christians to determine which one they experience? Did the apostle want people questioning their salvation? What is worldly grief anyway? Or godly, for that matter? Justin seeks to answer those questions. Twitter: ReclaimingRest Facebook: ReclaimingRest Apple Podcasts: podcasts.apple.com/us/podcas...

Justin still isn't about to declare which Christian tradition or denomination is the 'best.' (If that doesn't make sense...please see the previous episode, Part 1.) He still wants nothing to do with tribalism. He wants you to understand how the church is meant to operate according to the New Testament. That starts with preaching. Justin switches gears to the sacraments, and discipline. Tune in ...

True church? If that makes you nervous, please rest easy. Justin isn't about to declare which Christian tradition or denomination is the 'best.' He wants nothing to do with tribalism. 1 John Demystified | Reclaiming Rest

Mainstream preaching and teaching present 1 John as a series of tests. Passing the tests means one can be confident of salvation. That is, until doubt creeps in... And for many, doubt sticks around...only to become despair. Hmm... Is that why the apostle wrote his first inspired letter? Did John write to test the salvation of his original readers? There is a small but growing minority which veh...

Imagine... For a dozen years, you've gone out in public...and the only attention you're paid is so that people can keep their distance and utterly ignore you. That person had a face-to-face encounter with God in the flesh,...
Erased from The Book of Life? | Reclaiming Rest

Many believe Scripture to teach that God erases names from The Book of Life. It's understandable, but is that really what Scripture says? Can professing Christians disobey their way out of The Book of Life? How should the verses which people believe say that God erases names from The Book of Life be understood? Justin seeks to answer that question on this episode. Twitter: Reclaimin...

The Psalms hold a special place in believers' hearts. 88 in particular stands out and means a great deal to Justin. Why? Of all the lament psalm authors, the author of 88 didn't shift out of his darkness. The psalms prove that God's people struggle with darkness. They also prove that God can handle and doesn't condemn their darkness. Brothers and sisters, let us sing an inspired song sung in da...

Is Peace Even Possible? (Problem: Pietism) | Reclaiming Rest
Lol @ anemic - pretty much sums up the state of the evangelical churches today - stage & lights included
There are healthy churches. I'm thankful for them. But yes, there is much anemic singing and theology out there.
Praise God for the content brother
I'm glad it resonated with you! Praise indeed.
I didn't realize you were so young in what is sometimes called the Reformed faith. That said, I underwent a similar journey more than 25 years ago. But I went through many stages in the years that followed. In order to understand what you, I, and other believers will encounter, I would highly recommend the Pilgrim's Progress, if you haven't already started reading it.
#6. You reading the Bible in a year. I have made time to listen to my audio Bible almost every day. I thought I would become a much better Christian. Most days, I see myself as even more vile. Help me, Jesus.
Your comments are relatable. I appreciate your transparency. God's word doesn't say that we become 'better' by reading it. People say that. It's been said so much that Bible-reading is viewed as the de-facto way to grow as a Christian. That is troubling...since many misunderstand it and misapply it. (There wouldn't be so much error and heresy out there otherwise!) While there is nothing inherently wrong with personal/private Bible-reading, it's ultimately meant to done in community. The OT Jews did that during their festivals and in their synagogues. The Bereans did that in Acts. It's why the creeds and reformed confessions are a thing. We have access to centuries and centuries' worth of Spirit-led, well-thought-out theology and doctrine. God has used our brothers and sisters since the first century to establish much truth about the primary matters. Knowing that, I don't understand why many churches have their own statements of faith. They're largely unnecessary IMO.
Thanks for the presentation of the gospel of the grace of Christ. I pray that you will be established therein more & more. I know the lingering struggle it is to lay aside the human merit system & rest solely upon the faithfulness of Christ. Logically, it seems it should be easy to lay law aside seeing the pain it inflicts, but I have found it to be an ongoing battle. I chuckled when I heard you say that you had to take a sick day from work near the beginning of your journey. Ha! I spent two 30-day stays in psychiatric hospitals as a testimony to the havoc a law based approach to God can wreak! Oh well, to be fair I reckon I was a basket case before I encountered the terror of the law. As a result I too am kinda zealous for the good message of the grace of God as it is in the person & work of Jesus Christ. Thanks again for your stand & proclamation of that gospel! 🙂🙂
I'm doing my best, brother :) Thank you for your comments. Two stints in a psychiatric hospital, eh? Yikes :( I'm thankful for what our Father's grace and mercy have accomplished in our lives.
Hi Justin. 👋 Thanks for sharing some of your journey. I, too, have experienced much of what you spoke of & still to this day struggle with it. There are periods when I think I am making progress & bam, out of the blue a single old condemnation will knock me flat again. I am going through such a situation as I speak. A 40 year old condemnation has popped up & knocked me flat. I will pray for you. Lord, give us eyes to see. Ephesians 3:16-20
Hey Steve. Glad to share. And thanks for your sharing. I wouldn't wish struggles like ours on my worst enemy. As painful as they are, I'm thankful that The Gospel always has the final say.
We have similar journeys, brother. I've been very encouraged by your podcasts here on RUclips
Interesting to know that, thank you for sharing! I'm glad the podcast has encouraged you ^_^
Up there with some of the most important videos. Thank you brother.
I appreciate your affirmation!
Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this subject brother!
Glad to do so!
Thank you!! Very encouraging to my soul!
Glad to know that ^_^
I thank you for the encouragement. I am at 69 year old housewife, listening in Uvalde Texas.
I'm so glad to encourage. Gospel blessings to you and yours, sister!
Amen!
Thankyou for encouraging us Justin What a friend we have in Jesus
You're welcome. What a friend!
Those verses about God's friendship are so comforting!
Right? :)
"Now if by grace, then it is not by works; otherwise grace ceases to be grace." - Romans 11:6
Thanks for sharing that additional evidence to support the point!
He said ……My grace is sufficient for you Without grace no good news Thanks Justin
2 Corinthians 12:9 is another great example! Thanks Carol!
Thanks for always encouraging us to look to Christ Blessings to you brother and your family
Always glad to do so, and thank you for always encouraging me!
Excellent Justin, well thought out and well presented
I appreciate your affirmation brother!
Bless you, Brother! What a clear explanation of the distinction between law and a Gospel
I'm so glad it was clear to you!
😊amen!
:)
God bless !! Very encouraging
From one very weary saint/sinner to another, God bless and thank you.
Amen to your mustard seed analogy!
I appreciate your noticing that :)
Amen brother Justin! I love that quote “the objective truth of who Christ is for us and what He has done for us ALWAYS overrules anything that we think is truth about ourselves from a subjective standpoint” “The Gospel of Christ Jesus has the final say over out subjective experiences” Romans 8 Feelings, dreams, visions, miracles done by false teachers, aren’t the closed canon of the word of God no matter how real they feel or look the final say is the Word of God ! Those terror despair experiences serve to discipline us closer to Christ because “where else can we go? Christ has the words of eternal life” His sheep hear his voice and listen to them. Thanks you Justin these help me feel not alone in the struggles of doubt of salvation
Rachael, it warms my heart and I'm so glad to know that what I shared on this episode has benefited you. The objective truth of Who Christ is and what He has done for us...and Romans 8, are so precious. God's word indeed has the final say, no matter who or what attempts to convince us otherwise. I love your quotation of Peter in John 6:68, who was unstable just like us. And God made him an apostle! You're never alone, and in the Reclaiming Rest community it is safe to share your struggles.
Yes and amen! I had a similar experience that happened in the middle of the night I woke up in a panic and terror seized my heart and when I tried to draw comfort from prayer and meditation on the Lord all that I could draw from it was that our God is a dreadful consuming fire I was undone I woke my mom up and begged her to pray with me I clung to her in fear thinking “I don’t know the Lord” over and over even coming to Him I was dreadful of He was fearful to me. The God of the Bible came alive and revealed Himself to me. He wasn’t this Sunday school sketch book version of God that buttered you up in grace no matter what (speaking from a light view of sin) it was the real One that is Holy. And I was undone I’m a sinner and need to be saved from Him. That happened in 2019 and after that summer I took my walk way more seriously. Before I repented and got baptized in 2012 and was truly touched by the grace revealed in Christ but…. I was ok with doing certain things thinking I’m a Christian but can still go clubbing get drunk commit adultery speak unclean foolish things with my unsaved friends… but I’m still somehow exempt from Gods wrath thinking I’m saved but still participating in sinful things.. no. Idk if that was a backslide, or a false conversion, and God either truly saved me in 2019 or disciplined me heavily to bring back a stray sheep. Either way it’s left me with a scar and I still struggle like you said even to this day but thanks be to God for Jesus Christ and who He is and Did. Id rather suffer with this my whole life and work out my salvation with fear and trembling making it my own because Christ Jesus has made me His own (not talking about salvation by works but just seeking the Lord face in scripture and to know Him deeper so that I have biblical faith not a superficial easy believism faith) than be deceived into thinking Im a believer dying and facing the Lord with “depart from me I never knew you”. Thanks again for these they bless me soul! Sola Deo Gloria!
Wow, that's a lot to digest. It's humbling that you felt inclined to share those things. Yes, God is holy and sin must be punished...but don't forget that He is gentle and lowly in heart. (Matthew 11:29) You're in my prayers Rachael. God doesn't intend for His children to suffer from a lack of assurance. It's never good to sin, but we can't out-sin our Father's grace. We in fact fight sin by His grace. I'm curious if you've encountered reformed theology? I'll be covering that across the next couple episodes. Also, I hope it's comforting that "depart from Me" (Matthew 7:23) is addressed to false prophets that trusted in their own righteousness. Verses 15-22 demonstrate this. Believers are under no threat to hear those words.
Thank you and yes! I was raised going to a Reformed Baptist church and still go there I adhere to the 5 solas and TULIP doctrine. I believe it to be biblical 👍🏻 I was just really immature in my faith and looked at sin too lightly because “hey I’m predestined I’m the elect.” But thankful for His faithfulness when he begins a good work in you he is faithful to complete it. These are the promises I live by. Thank you for your comments excited to hear more truth from the podcasts. God bless!
Understood. I appreciate knowing these things. Well-said on all accounts. Gospel blessings to you :)
Amen, nothing can separate us from His love. Even the slightest belief in the Gospel is saving. It's too bad that evangelicalism in general doesn't get this.
Too bad, yes. Thank you Cherice for that good word.
Very encouraging Justin !! most mornings especially on the Lords day the accusations like rapid fire some true like you said but others straight out of hell I can relate to a lot of what you shared praise our Lord for His leading many to rest even in the midst of the battles It’s encouraging to know it may not all go away but we can be confident in the promises of God Looking to Christ and those promises lead to peace and hope!!
You encourage me Carol! I am sorry to know that you experience similar things, but so glad to know we can both be confident in our Father's promises and look to Christ our hope, peace, and rest.
This is very encouraging please continue to post I am interested in reading the book that ultimately led you into the doctrines of grace! I struggle myself with doubt and assurance of salvation. But God is faithful and described in scripture as slow to anger and abounding in lovingkindness and mercy. He will not despise a contrite heart.
I'm so glad to know that Rachael, thank you for sharing! I'm also sorry to know that you struggle with assurance of salvation. That is unfortunately common. Please know that more content is coming, it just won't come as frequently as is the case with other channels.
Thanks for adding your voice to the mix of those exposing the widespread Pietistic influence within Christian circles.
Glad to do so! I appreciate your affirmation Cherice!
Thanks Justin for exposing the falsehoods of pietism and faithfully presenting the gospel of Christ
Glad to do so! I appreciate the affirmation Rolan!
So very Amen Always Good News Peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ!!!
Romans 5 is always a gold mine of encouragement :)
Gospel blessings, Justin! Nice to see you and get to know your journey to rest!!!
The same to you, Kelly! Thank you for the kind words!
Grace and peace brother!!!
Gospel blessings, sister!
