This Weeks Battery Install - Wife Edit
probably the last time i ask my wife to put together a video for me 🫠😅 here's her version of one of this weeks battery installs
I always found when I was an apprentice that there was a real lack of videos and online resources to help me. I think that most electricians are visual learners, I know I definitely am. So it's hard when we are expected to do 75% of our training in books. Because if this I've set out to start making a library of training and explanations to help my fellow electrical workers in areas they might be having trouble.
Remember, this setup was performed in a controlled environment

Solar day in a life.

This week we install 2 solar systems on a house one feeds into the IQ controller with 2 batteries for the backup loads within the house and the other operates as a normal solar system on the second phase with no back up. A little bit of electrical magic and a contactor 😵💫 we can make this system work seamlessly. Just need to do final testing and put all those good ol' stickers everywhere. I al...

Thank you!
Hey bro can you please send me your number or email id want to talk about regulation exam.
Sure, bro nz.tradie1@gmail.com Flick something through
If the dimmer was put on the neutral wire then the dimmer would not be live? Or is there a further problem in doing this? Thanks
The dimmer needs to be in line with the light and before the lamp in order to dim properly
Check out Greenlee whole saw kit no need for that
In the UK we have to isolate the neutral too, (it's considered a live conductor now, due to potential PEN faults if the combined neutral/earth goes open, think you guys call it a MEN?) But yes, if we had insulated earths I'd be totally up for splitting the cable to prevent splices as @stuffpeterlikes said earlier
(and yes, we still use solid core 2.5 with an unsheathed 1.5mm earth, like the dark ages, Ireland got on board a few years back with full sized earths and insulating them)
Keeping the N & E conductors intact 👍 Every splice is another thing that can go wrong.
where can I buy a regs book?
I think its called standard.govt
what are the legislation books you should obtain for the exam? asnz 3000 and what other ones? cheers!
The electrical regulations book 👍
@@nztradie cool! Thank u
@@nztradie wait is that the “electrical (saftey) regulations 2010” ?
@D1ANDONLYDENZ1 yip, that's the one. I just had to check that it saw the sighted regulation still 😅
you shouldnt just obtained them for the exam. should have access to one all the time. be it digital or physical
Good and clear instructions
As someone who isn't a trade but have done IT were you aren't allowed reference material in most cases and need to remember the answer they want not always how you do in real world, think the way you put across is good for learning and exam taking (of course each person needs to set to there preference as you stated) - I also think all walks of life should re-hash there knowledge and not hesitate to check reference material, as far to often things aren't done right or up-to standard (we all know when someone isn't monitoring our work to a high standard that is when corners get cut or bad habits come in and can seriously harm to people or things to fail) Thanks for the upload and i do hope this helps a bunch of people out :)
Interesting to see how things are done in NZ. In the uk we're not supposed to mix brands of breaker and only use the same breaker make as the manufacturer of the enclosure
Well depends on the terminal. Most PDL terminals fit folded.
that's a cute sounding apprentice you got
What brand of optis are those?
What do you mean optis bro ?
@@nztradie optimisers.
@@nztradie at around the 30sec mark
Oh, I think I know what you mean. They are enphase mirco inverters 🫡
Fark that! Hurts my back looking at it hahaha
Ahaha fair, mine too after a little while
Are you based in Christchurch by any chance?
Im not unfortunately, are you after an install ? 🤔
Also the switchboard manufacturer would recommend you match the existing breakers.
Where is the spaghetti mate
And how do you install it without a harness on?
You do have to get onto a roof to install these, common sence is required as to whether the roof is suitable to go up and fit the achor before having rigging on or whether you need to be rigged in some way to get up in the first place 😉
lol 😂 sparky with a broom! Respect!
I am an electrician in the USA and I can’t understand what you’re talking about . It’s sounds like you’re speaking alien 😂😂😂.
Aha, wow, that's crazy. I guess all the terms are just completely different, aye
Got a clause number? Is that an NZ rule? You could get your 20% back by pissing off the 2 pole rcds for all rcbos.
Aha I'm trying to find it now, to be honest 😅 Im fairly sure that its allow of 20% expansion when installing a new switchboard, I but Ill see what i find
@@nztradie Some of the control panels I've built were insanely tight and designed by EE's. Only rule I know of relates to NSW metering rules that require a half space between the main switch, they don't even own their grid anyway lol At least being a kiwi you have free access to your standards which is something I always have a spat about being an Aussie.
Yea danm, although you cant get the regs for free until you have your exams i think
Why don't you use combos?
I do, although if your mcbs are different brands then you cant 👌
Well done playing it safe and not wrecking the colourbond!
Champ! Can you give a link to where to buy a dimmer from?
This one is just a PDL dimmer from JA Russells, but any dimmer would work
No close ups, useless
How close do you want it ?
@@nztradie so I can see where the wires go, simple
Im blind. i saw the back of a women with a bikini in the thumbnail😂
That is probably just a skit stint for filming. Each time they look like the same exactpair of blue side cutters he throws off of the roof.
You should have gotten the track that is used in the back of box trucks and box trailers pulled by semi trucks. Quick and easy to re position things without the hooks being in the way or possible damaging something you are transporting for a job.
Personally, I prefer an unsecured shelf that topples on every corner
Oh yea, that's the best, and when you pair that with a screw tray that opens on its own there is nothing better 💪
Straight info and no bollocks. Thats what i like. Cheers nz tradie🤙
WTF bro? I can do all the meter wiring in OZ, I own myself all the gear to do the job right, no 3rd party need.
What bit are you referring to? The lines company requires us to get one of their certified fuse pullers it you are talking about that
What is the green marking tool called?
Its called a Caulk marker, this brand is marxmate from bunnings
Does it connects to a new circuit ?
Yes, generally, you would connect it to a new circuit
@@nztradie 👍
@@nztradie i guess 20-amp circuit breaker with Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) will do?
Yip, that would be fine, i used a 16 in this case
@@nztradie thanks for your videos bro. Keep doing the mahi
AC isolator on the roof... strange place to put it.
Has got to be with the array my guy🫡
Hey bro check out the uni-t ut211b clampy as an alternative, they are awesome bang for your buck.
I'll look into it. So far, I've been suggesting the fluke 323 for new apprentices as their first meter. Super appreciate the comments bro, keep them coming 💪
I do like my fluke gear, but I'm a poor man lol! Check out the specs on the fluke 323, the 325 is the better choice as it does hertz & DC amps. Great for solar & genset work. Also a big fan of the t6-1000 as it's got NCV built in. @@nztradie
Ballsy to be a tradie wearing a metal ring... Not recommended my dude. It's gonna happen and then you'll remember this comment
Yea, maybe, but im also not working with the kind of gear that would usually be associated with de gloving a finger
@@nztradie sure sure. Don't want to sound like a wuss. But it can get caught on a bolt when jumping from a roof or something unexpected not tradie-related. My dad de-gloved his finger cause the ring got gaught in a door latch. I burned the shit out of myself because i accidentally placed a welding electrode holder on my ring and it conducted 120A into the welding table turning the gold ring a glowing red. Taking most of my finger's skin with it. Metal Rings and people who work with their hands don't mix so nicely. Stay safe mate ;)
@@hersenskim thats all fair points
I'd like to see your thoughts about fall protection, out of all the aspects of the electrical trade solar is by far the most physical.
I got you 🫡
Doesn’t fluke or someone make a multimeter that automatically does phase rotation?
Yip this one will do that, i couldn't have used that function as i needed to know the full sequence of all phases
Easy way, hook up a 3 phase lighting dimmer pack. If you go to dim a light on channel 2 or 3 and either an IGBT or SCR explodes (depending on what the dimmer pack uses) then you've confirmed your phase rotation is backwards. 🤬
Nice nice, although this meter will also do phase rotation too 😉😉
In 25 years of doing electrical work on and off, have I ever heard it referred to as the "earth" wire. Lmfao. Nothing wrong with it at all, I understood without a second thought, just funny how the term varies between countries. It's always been the ground wire lol.
Wow yea in new zealand it pretty much always referred to as the 'earth'
Love your videos. Any tips for installing on this profile tile?
Be really carful not to dent them, stand on the end on the tile where the timber is
🤙🏾
Make your own
Think i might need to aye
Awesome infos! Thanks
As an Australian electrician, I really enjoyed watching this video. Keep up the good work.
Nice. A request: please show us how to run conduit through an external brick wall and keep it weather tight. Asking for a friend ;-)
Brilliant!!! Had a dimmer switch, wanted to replace it with a single switch. I had removed the dimmer and the wiring wondering why I had so many wires x 9. Then realised it was a two switch set up and couldn't remember where the wires came from. Simple video to follow and sorted first time. thanks for the great video.
Glad to help
Hi would be a good video if there was a close up of the connections you make instead of speedily connecting everything with all the wires in a messtwisted together doesnt explain very well
What goes into the one next to the main the you wrote sub on (you didn't mention that.)
