This was a single Godox AD600 in a 36in Octabox.

This was so long ago I don't remember exactly what the settings were, but I believe I shot it on HLG

It starts with setting your ambient light first. Leave the flash off, test some test shots and get the background exposed how you like it, then add fill flash for the subject. If you're shooting in a studio, you will have to play with the distance from light, to subject, to background and get a happy medium. However if you have multiple lights then you can control a lot more variables.

I used multiple lights for this shoot, but you could get away with 1 light and make some great photos. Just practice different angles with the light to bring out the most definition in the subject.

No it's not always needed, but I recommend always having one just in case. There are occasions when shooting outdoors that I may not need or use one, but mostly I carry them to control my output instead of relying solely on ambient lighting conditions.

It's the Atomos Ninja 5 external monitor. They have a kit that comes with 2 batteries and some other accessories.

Thanks for taking the time to watch. Each session will be different so these exact settings won't always be the case for what's needed. I shot this at f1.8 | 1/1600 sec | ISO 100 (don't remember what flash power was used). The thought process behind using off camera flash is set the ambient exposure/background how you want it to be seen, then start applying flash power as needed for the subject. Don't let the available light around your subject determine your final look. Take control and force the look you want with the power of flash. This also could've been a natural light shot and would've looked great, but bright and airy with over exposed backgrounds. That's a look that I do sometimes especially if the client requests it. However I like to use flash and balance between background and foreground to help separate my subject and really make them pop in the frame. Hopefully this helps and I have some other videos using off camera flash as well.

You certainly could use that lens. Just remember that anything that reaches towards the camera in wide focal lengths will be greatly exaggerated. Can make legs look longer, or a nose look bigger and face look warped. I've done quite a few shots at 35mm but typically stay away from wider focal lengths. I'd recommend using it with backgrounds that you want to be visible, not something you want to blur out because at f4 much of the frame will be in focus, not just your subject.

I couldn't tell you for sure because I don't use a light meter. But it's different for every situation depending on if the sun is out, is it cloudy, are we in a controlled studio environment etc... but I definitely want it to be noticeable, it helps carve out the other side of the subject from the background. I hope this explanation helps somewhat.

If I have a continuous light instead of a flash for a hair light or a side light, do I need a powerfull light? Or is it better to have a second flash? I'm having trouble finding answers. (My main flash is 400w and I would like to do studio and outdoor use?)@@RyanLImagery

@@dje7917 For photography you will more often than not, need that second flash. There are few situations where a video light will meet your needs when coupled with flash

Absolutely. I believe you can control up to 5 of these separately with the right trigger.

Unfortunately I don't have metadata baked into the photos for flash power. I change it in many different situations and don't remember what it was later on. But during this session I can say that it is usually on the higher end, especially with using just a 200 watt strobe outdoors in daytime.

I have seen videos on the Westcott strobes but never used them. The flash system used in my videos is the Godox brand.

For night portraits or any situation with low ambient light, less light power is required. So the AD200 may be actually too powerful or just right, but I don't see it not being powerful enough. In many cases I have just used speedlights at night in modifiers to keep the power low enough. I shot many weddings over the years that go long into the night and speedlights were my go to setup.

The A7III is a great affordable overall camera for video and photo. The recommendation mostly would matter what you need to film. If 4k 30fps / 1080 60fps is ok for you than the A7III is a great option. However the A7IV allows 4k60 but at a higher price. It mostly depends on your budget, but just about any new full frame Sony will be a great camera for filming and photos.
