Excellent lecture!
wonderful overview. thanks ❤
It is amazing! What a bunch of nonsense is being pushed today; Richard, a very serious person with old country values would be deeply upset to experience what’s being pushed today; too bad… and, this shall pass…
Saludos a mi querida Catalina. Experta y conocedora de la obra del Arquitecto Luis Barragán. Toda una autoridad en la materia.
What an incredible treat. As a Wright buff for decades, I can say this is on an exceptional level. Bless you 🙂🙂🙂🙃
love the Hatch house
it is always interesting to see ones' manifestation project. i think that he is an engineer before an architect; and that shows through his deep attention to the constructive system, the structure, and function of the build but on the other hand, beauty wasn't the topic of his works regardless of his famous saying "Architecture is not the pursuit of utility of practicality. Architecture is beauty. No other kinds of architecture exist or can exist."
Awful house...it seems one water tank, it is the same story of the invisible clothes of the King that only idiots could see
Ok
This is a fascinating presentation, Tim.
One of the worlds best houses !!! Eliot distilled the design perfectly
The Namesake of Barragan Lusienbarn of Bleach
Amazing. Great it’s been brought back to its original state. Also a testament to Mies van der Rohe’s genius is that the furniture is still in production
Does the house have a door?
I believe it does - right after you walked up the stairs.
@ 58:30 Contrary to Tim Benton's assertion that we had not noticed the supposed "slot" in the double-folding bedside table, we did indeed notice the arc on the surface of the rotating part of the table. We just didn't interpret the arc on the surface as a slot, which interestingly in the French reconstrution version is by necessity cut much wider than the image in the photograph, the reason for this is that the connection underneath is evidently so wide that the supposed "slot" has to be wider than in the image. Our interpretation and reconstruction was exhibited in Austin for one month and did not break down after one day. We reasoned that the stay was fixed to the edge of the top surface as this is closer to the center of gravity of the linearly extended state. We interpreted the supposed "slot" as a scratch mark of a retaining element to ensure that the rotating part of the table does not drop while the table is being folded against the wall. See O'Neil Ford Monograph No. 7: E.1027: Eileen Gray, Wasmuth Tübingen-Berlin 2017, 216-219. The Akademie der Künste Berlin will be hosting the installation of the Master Bedroom from E.1027 from 11. April to 10. June 2019 at the Pariser Platz site, in Berlin. The entrance to the installation is free.
Dear Wilfried. The position of the folding table leg of our resconstruction is exactly the same as in 1929 : in the center of the top. You know that all of our work of reconstruction for E 1027 is based on a scientific approach and we are not drawing a line of plan that is not secured by proof. For the bedside table we have 2 evident sources which nobody else had gathered before : we have found the traces of the fixing of the top and of the leg of the table on the original bedhead that still exists in the house, that gives exactly the position of the leg, to the nearest millimeter. We have also seen and studied an original bedside table by Eileen Gray, the one she did for her flat in Paris, where the leg is exactly in the center of the top. You know that I have been working for more than 20 years to study E 1027 and all its furniture. I found again, saw and studied all the surviving items that were sold in the famous Sotheby's auctions in Monaco in 1991 and 1993. I did an archeological survey of the entire house in 1999, before any restoration. I am the only one who also came several times to Tempe a Pailla (closed to everyone), Eileen Gray's own house, to see and study all the original furniture that is still inside. I found Jean Badovici's personal archives that everybody thought were lost. And I also found again Eileen Gray's carpenter André Roattino before his death and spoke a long time with him about the details of Eileen Gray's production. Who did the same ? Please try to come and see our work and speak with us before talking about it ;-)
I admire Luis Barragan so much that I would like everyone to understand the great content of symbology and philosophy contained in his architectural work. This is a good effort by Armando Chavez to expose the work of Luis Barragan, but he has left many explanations aside. Luis Barragán achieved what few, he created timeless architecture.
Anything you recommend me to watch or read?
Hi!, Sure. I think a good book would be this one: www.moma.org/documents/moma_catalogue_2461_300298680.pdf I´ll search for more content, and i´ll gladly share the link. Greetings!

@@jaimemontano1558 Any english subs? Thank you in advance.
I think its quite sad and problematic that E1027 is only spoken about in context to Le Corbusier and his acts of vandalism to the house. Gray's nuance and sensitivity to design was definitely overshadowed by Le Corbusier, again dismissing the importance of women in modern architecture. And I think thats exactly what Corbusier would have wanted. Perhaps he was a little intimidated by Gray's power...
Just spent 25 minutes riveted to the screen watching this :) Love this house and this fascinating lecture adds to my enjoyment. One thing always has bugged me though: the well documented and even here talked about need to cross the courtyard to use the bathroom in the private side - when quite clearly shown on the plans is a cloaks toilet incorporated into the public side, in the entrance area backing onto the kitchen wall. I guess it was never built? If anyone could confirm this I'd sleep easier :)
Hello Graham, indeed, the toilet was planned there just in case the other idea might not work. But the family never felt the urge to build it.
Thank you so much - lovely to have a resolution :) @@IconicHouses
Standardized as a one off...
"all this nonsense about le corbusier possessing the house" ?!? Everything I have ever read about E-1027 has indicated that Le Corbusier entered the house when Eileen was not present, that he painted the murals without her consent and that this was most definitely against her will. I, as well as many others, consider this an act of violence and the way that the murals and Le Corbusier's activities are presented within this lecture are incredibly dismissive and problematic!!!
I am a Corb fan but have to admit the Jeykll and Hyde within him: artswise.blogspot.hk/2015/11/speculating-le-corbusier.html
merci
Very nice and informative presentation, despite the spotty sound levels.
Just bizarre, after all the sophisticated design theory he builds 2 wooden huts...
