"Cut those strings"? Definitely. Bass strap is just fine. Most guitarists hold their instruments too low, and don't achieve optimum dexterity and longevity, which is far worse then "too high". A higher bass position allows the player to rest his arm on the bass while playing, which isn't as conducive to strumming. If you look at classical guitarists, you'll see that they all hold their instruments well above their groins, unlike your typical rock star. Although, if your just strumming 3-chord pop songs, it probably doesn't matter.
