What makes this a bittersweet funeral is that they are literally having one more laugh with Chapman most especially with the swearing in John Cleese's speech and the fact they are celebrating his life with positivity which is something not usually present in other funerals.
In 1989, when this funeral happened, I was barely a teenager an knew nothing of Monty Python. Yet as a huge fan later, an now at age 50, I look back at this eulogy an feel a profound, deep sadness. That was the power an influence of Monty Python an all the crew. They have, an always will, transcend time. THAT is what makes them icons.
Monty Python is without a doubt the best comedy group of all time. On their own they are all hilarious, but together they are absolutely phenomenal. That’s precisely one of the reasons why it’s so distinctly sad to see any of them go.😔😔😔
To imagine I was born two years later. Wow. I watch everything from them. It makes me sad that one of the true comedic geniuses of this world died before I was even born

I mean here atheists never shed a tear for Jesus or the moth of Jesus yet used the moment of death to get laughs. how little emotions are understood by atheists.

As some people in the comments here pointed out Eric Idle being tearful and smiling: i think the best way of mourning someone is: crying and smiling at the same time, i.e.: Crying out of sadness because somebody close to you passed on, while smiling because that person was there in the first place.

Cheese upon learning Chapman was gay,refused to speak to him for nearly 2 years other than on set..He eventually got used to the idea and resumed a normalised relationship with him
thats not true - or at least misleading. cleese wasnt upset that chapman was gay, but that he hasnt told him. they have been working closely together for decades, very closely. they might have shared the same hotel room, or even the same bed. cleese sometimes ran around naked during the making of the flying circus... and there might have been some situation which in hindsight might have been very upsetting to cleese. in the docu monty python almost the truth cleese said sth like: we were very surprised and he took this as disapproval - and all the other pythons agreed, that chapman was a very difficult person, who wasnt easy to have a conversation with - outside of work (esp. when drunk, which was always...). so there are many possible scenarios, in which cleeses reasons for not talking to chapman for 2 years (i dont know where you got that number from) had nothing to do with being homophobic - and it might have been chapmans fault - or simply because cleese lived in a different country at that time / had other projects etc.

That is what i hope to get in my own funeral: have a lot a fun, have a drink, smoke some weed, listen to good music and enjoy the moment. While you can, with friends, love and friendship. This was NOT Chapman's funeral. It was a televised memorial service held two weeks after his funeral. His actual funeral was private and attended only by family - the other Python members, although invited, stayed away so that it wouldn't become a media circus.
I'd like to have John Cleese at my own funeral. As well as I've been trying to make life comfortable for myself and significant others, as happy I'm expecting to be at the end of it. The struggle is over. No fuss, no flowers, just a lot of joy!!!
