Making literary studies and creative writing accessible to all!
I'm Haley! I am a novelist living in Memphis, Tennessee with two dogs (Ziva and Stella) and a cat (Sage). I have an MFA in creative writing with a literature concentration. After Covid ruined my PhD plans and low pay forced me to quit my job as an adjunct professor, I have been missing academia something fierce! I started this channel so I can create the type of community I enjoyed in grad school. Join me as I work on living a literary lifestyle-outside of academia.

Great wrap-up, Haley! I really enjoyed hearing about all the books you read this month. The thumbnail with your husky is adorable too! 🐾 I’ve just subscribed to your channel and can’t wait to see more.
thanks so much! I will pass on the complement to Stella the husky!
I approve of the thumbnail.
I will make sure to let Stella know!
What a beautiful beach! It looks so different from ours in the Northeast. Not as cold lol. Haha, “let’s start rocking the Ferris wheel; just kidding, please don’t” 😂 I enjoyed the vlog!
Babel looks like a really interesting tome, thanks for the suggestion
Great video. While I like the vibe of dark academia, I tend not to read the fictional books on it (weird, I know). I do love the insular, academic study aspect of the genre. Babel was an interesting read, but unfortunately didn't click with me.
I get that! Honestly, I'd often rather be a character IN the dark academia books, doing the deep study with really close friends (minus the murder part, lol). But reading the books are the next best thing! I enjoyed Babel overall but I do wish I vibed more with the writing style.
Keep posting! Stay consistent!
thank you so much for the encouragement! I actually have another little vlog ready to go that I'm going to post on Friday. It took me over a month to edit it and get it ready, but it's something! 😅
Hlua😂❤
Are you going to be doing any new book recommendation videos soon?
I'm working on doing a 2024 new book recommendation video! stay tuned!
I saw you in comment section on video about bornout culture. I hit like and subscribe and I hope your endevours will bare fruits in the future. All the best
thank you! I somehow missed this comment when you left it, lol. I appreciate the support!
nice video! I love your vibe
thank you so much for making this video and telling us your opinions! I saw your comment on another channel's video and that's how I discovered your channel. I am so happy to be here and I hope the world isn't so harsh on you <3 keep up with the good work on your passions, I love your videos!
I found the Library of Shadows kind of boring... predictable plot twist and ending, but maybe YA is just not for me anymore
Fix your audio
thanks for the feedback! Any suggestions on how? And what exactly is wrong with it? It sounds fine to me, lol, so I don't know how to fix it!
Are you going to do some more book review videos soon?
yes I have several planned! Since it's October, I'm going to do horror recommendations... my top 10 haunted house books, top 10 vampire books, top 10 monster/creature books... well, that is if I can get to 10 on each! I don't want to recommend something I hated just because it fits a category, haha!
although I guess the videos I described are more "recommendations" than "reviews" lol but I'm working my way through some new releases that I plan to review!
I was hoping to love "a hundred vicious turns", but when I started reading it, the use of pronouns kept on throwing me off and got me confused...Tried reading it until 70 pages and gave up!
Hi Haley - pardon my uninformed question, but what is dark academia? I came across your channel and find your passion intriguing, but I’m just unfamiliar with this content.
no worries at all! I usually describe dark academia at the beginning of videos where I talk about it buuuut I forgot this time... ADHD, lol. to put it simply, dark academia is an internet aesthetic mostly centered around learning, literature, and art, and particularly a sort of romanticized version of it. But it's also become a book genre, as in this video. Books that fit this category are usually set at a school, involve the romanticization of learning/education... and have a murder. That's the "dark" part, I guess! Donna Tartt's The Secret History is sort of *the* dark academia book... but of course, people have been romanticizing elite education long before she published the book in 1993, and definitely long before people were calling it "dark academia." So it's sort of a new name for a very old thing!
I very much enjoy how you casually frame certain tropes as tropes (e.g. "enigmatic professor"). I'm sitting here like "oh yeah! Why DO they always call quirky professors with a heart of gold enigmatic" 🤔 I did not realize that "dark academia" was even a genre- this is my new thing. Thank you for this, beautiful RUclips woman.
haha yes! It's sort of a newish genre, in a way. Like, the name is new but the concept is as old as time because people have been romanticizing elite education loooong before people were calling it "dark academia." I'm glad I introduced you to it!
@@haleylquinton yes indeed, you've earned a subscriber. Looking forward to more and to see you hit it big. Keep the videos coming, you've got talent.
I'm glad I found your channel over here, having recently finished this novel you have some great takeaways about this book. As a black writer, these are topics I'm forced to grapple with constantly, so it was refreshing to see RF Kuang bring them up in her fiction. It's a shame that ultimately because of this climate where identity is so guarded by marginalized groups, that its most likely making a whole generation of writers afraid of writing other people outside their own experience. Which I don't blame them, who really wants to be dragged to pieces over something like that? I hope things can change. I for one would love seeing how an Asian author would tackle a book about the black community, for example. Not with contempt or indifference, but with care and compassion. Great vid though, and I hope you find the passion to write again!
Thank you so much for commenting! As a white person, I do sometimes worry about making videos like this because I don't want to "step outside my lane" and accidentally say something insensitive... but these are important, contemporary topics that I can't help but talk about. I found RF Kuang's comment about how being forced to only write about your own experiences actually harms marginalized communities the most eye-opening--in a way that honestly speaks to my own privilege that it isn't somethingI hadn't thought about. But yeah--maybe Asian immigrants want to write something other than an Asian immigrant story over and over again! My next video (that I'm taking forever to edit lol) is about SA Cosby's All the Sinners Bleed, which is a Southern Gothic (my favorite genre) thriller about the first Black sheriff in a small town. (I very much recommend this book if you haven't read it btw but check out the content warnings first). The protagonist Titus Crowne wants to change the system but is also limited by working within the system. He has to deal with racists who hate him, but also the Black and progressive community who feel like he isn't doing enough to further their cause. And of course there's also fantastic commentary about police brutality. It's another one that I'm worried about saying the wrong thing, but I love this book and I just want to talk about it! I am happy to say I have started writing again! I think just talking about how I want to do it again and putting that out there has led to me just doing it... slowly... painfully... but doing it!
Good information!
