    My LGB mogul can’t climb more the 1-1/2% grade without slipping on a curve. Do steeper grades need to be only on straight sections?

    • @RockwallCanyonRR
      @RockwallCanyonRR 8 дней назад

      @johnburk5087 I've owned a couple of LGB Moguls in the past and noticed similar issues. Rather than modify your track, my suggestion would be to swap out the wheels in the tender and cars to either LGB or Piko brand ball bearing wheelsets. This is especially helpful if you are pulling the LGB D&RGW-style coaches. Not only do the bb wheels reduce the normal drag, but they also can be used for lighting power pickup in coaches and caboose. I know they are expensive, but if your Mogul is regularly slipping, it's more likely that the gearing will fail prematurely, which would also be costly. As an added benefit, your other engines will live much happier lives as well!

      @railfandepotproductions Oh man I'd love to have a VIA FP9 in G scale! I used to work at Conway Scenic in New Hampshire and would occasionally ride the FP9s they had back then. They were great engines, but the low speed and heavy grades were not ideal for them, so they went on to Pan Am and now sit at CSX in Georgia awaiting future duties. If you havent seen them yet, my friend @gscalejake (on youtube) did a great job custom painting and detailing them in the Pan Am scheme!

      @TYR-RailFan The sill-mounted ditchlamps are just very simple brass tubes with lamps installed in them. My 1741 has incandescent "grain of rice" lamps and the 1742 has warm white LEDs. My 1743 (show in this video) has no ditch lights, but does have "traction" lights under the cab frame. The plows and high mount bells are all cast resin details from Details by Eric.

    • @RockwallCanyonRR

      Technically, both are "powered" engines, but in this case, the lead (GP9) has an onboard battery with a radio electronic speed controller (ESC), and the trailing engine (RS3) was just drawing power from the lead. I usually run the RS3 with passenger equipment in which the lead coach contains the battery and ESC it needs to operate.

      I’m surprised you didn’t make mention of the Japanese Bonsai tree (or other East Asian equivalents), which is the first possibility that comes to this novice’s mind. But, I’m guessing they’re hard to come-by, prohibitively expensive, and probably too delicate for harsh-weather growth. By the way, do you try to pass off your nearby real trees to visitors as monster Sequoia trees? (If you’re a true scenery aficionado, you could carve out a miniature drive-through at the base of one, and position a model car passing through the carve-out.)

    • @RockwallCanyonRR
      @RockwallCanyonRR 17 дней назад

      @terryv Oh absolutely! So I had to look it up to be sure, but the term "Bonsai" has more to do with the trimming techniques than the actual plant species. Japanese maples, Junipers, and Cypress are commonly used. If you ever visit a Japanese garden be sure to check if they have a Bonsai collection. I had the pleasure of seeing one at the Montreal QC Botanical Gardens and was blown away! Some of them are quite old, which adds an even deeper fascination.

    Have some code 332 down already but, now it’s out of stock. Thinking strongly about code 250. Other than rail height, any issue with steel wheel flanges? Thanks and keep up the videos, great motivation!

    • @RockwallCanyonRR
      @RockwallCanyonRR 28 дней назад

      @MarktheCheeseThief I've had no issues with code 250 brass rail for "LGB" size flanges. However, the trouble I have had is failing ties due to rail expansion. As such the only code 250 section I have now is a 90ft straightaway and it's largely in the shade. If you try to use it in the sun, just be careful how you anchor the track to account for expansion/contraction. The code 332 ties, oth, have a lot more plastic to anchor the rails. So which brand of 332 track is oos? If I were buying new track, (and cost wasnt a factor) I think I would only consider LGB and the flex track from Trainli.

      This specific model runs about 15 minutes after steaming up. After that, water from the tender needs to be injected into the pressurized boiler using a hand pump. If needed, the fuel can be recharged (and quickly re-lit). After a half hour or so, the steam cylinder oil can be drained and refilled under steam as well, but im usually ready for a break by then.
