That's because she's dancing Ori Tahito, which translates to "traditional dance." This is how tahitians did it before modern ori tahiti. There are other videos on RUclips of female dancers doing this same style. Just type in "ori tahito pauline", click the video of the girl in the purple grass skirt and you'll see an example of what I'm talking about.
@@candiigurl7893 There's an obvious difference between Maiau and Pauline. You can see Pauline do actual various moves with correct technique (fa'arapu, tamau, teki fa'arapu, duck walk). Maiau put her foot on a stool at 1:56 and shook her butt like kids do. I don't know why Maiau is representing Ori Tahiti with this dance because there's almost nothing technical about it.

Well, to expand your knowledge, this dancer is predicting how they used to dance centuries ago. Back in the days, tahitian women were dancing like this. It's JUST nowadays that we are trained and steps are getting more different and modern.
Lol Tahitian dances were danced this way before settlers reformed their cultural ways and had them cover up... with a coconut bra. Dont shame her for giving the crowd a lesson in history of what Tahitian dancing was long before we had all this cover up glitz and glam. The dance movements were just like this... not as graceful as dance is taught nowadays. Thumbs up to this!😁

Well spoken. We should see more of authentic Tahitian dancing in authentic costumes. Tahitian dancers wearing bras are an invention from the mid-20th century, when traditional dancing was revived after a century of ban or repression by the missionaries. Before their arrival in the beginning of the 19th century, Tahitian dancers never wore any bras. The missionaries banned the dances completely or at least had the dancers to wear long dresses. When Tahitian dancing was revived, bare breast still were taboo in the western civilisation, so the "classic" costume with a grass skirt or pareu plus a bra was invented. As topless swimwear came into fashion in the 70's and the tits taboo was lifted, Tahitian dancers began to adapt to this norm and could wear more traditional costumes (i.e. topless). In spite of the fact that bare breats no longer are taboo in the western civilisation, this way of dressing is only seen occationally among Tahitian dancer, unfortunately.
