hi, i'm alpenstorm. i make gaming videos and streams, as well as clips from the games i play. i'm also known as Sh1ry0n in some places.
How to Install Apps on IRIX / Emulating IRIX PT.3
in this video, i figured out how to install apps on IRIX and how to increase the RAM of the VM and make it faster.

in this video i managed to emulate the IRIX OS with MAME at near 100% speeds (the speed of a real SGI indy) i also explore the os and the various demos available and compile an n64 rom with the dev tools installed on the os. Love these videos. Discovered you shouldn't run MAME over RDP...bad decision. Did you ever do a video/explanatiob on how to build a chd from an IRIX iso image??
you mean how to install IRIX on MAME? I didn't do that yet because the installation takes a couple of hours and it will be painful to record all of that, but, yeah, I probably will eventually

which files? the game ROM? you would have to dump that from your Wii U.

Thanks for the video. Why did you switched to the IRIX 6.5? 100MHz Indy is not fast enough for it (even with 128Mb of RAM). IRIX 5.3 and 6.2 should be snappier for such system.
good idea. idk, i havent been able to install irix 5.3 for some reason, but 6.2 should work. i'll get to to it sometime
RTX GPU is must necessary?
good question. i've never used mame with a different computer than the one i have now - it didn't work on my M1 mac. i don't know if it works with the intel integrated gpu or the AMD gpus

i'm really impressed button fly , and those demos actually run reasonably well,. i remember seeing this and playing with this live on one of their refrigerator sized machines at an expo
that must have been epic. yeah, it runs pretty fast on modern hardware, even with emulation
How did u get your mouse to appear as one of devices? My g pro wont appear in that tab
is it bluetooth? idk about BT mice, I use a wired. other than that, maybe the app can't recognize your mouse? i don't have a mac anymore, so unfortunately, I won't be able to update this video :c
wow, is the emulation speed is from your cpu? or is the software?
well both are important factors i have a pretty good cpu (Intel i7 12th gen) but it still ran slowly with the first version of MAME I tried.
Could you maybe make a tutorial on how to install the software on irix? I already broke my brain reading the whole documentation. Maybe could you please separately explain how to install using the software manager, and also using the tar archives? I am constantly getting an error that the software manager doesn't find the DISTs in the dist folder of the cd Rom
sure! - i'll start working on it soon... also, the DIST problem might be due to trying to run the software off the CDROM instead of copying it to the disk. *(or your software might be incomplete)
Hey i know its unlikely youll see/respond to this but my Indy startup is stuck down like at 10:57, ive tried closing it and running again but that doesnt work, any idea why it gets stuck or a direct solution would be very helpful. Great tutorial otherwise!
try windowing it by adding -window to the command prompt
How do I get the cursor to move and click?
uhh... there are a couple reasons why it might not work... first - are you running this on a windows pc? - i have not tried it with any other os and if you are using something else, MAME might not find your mouse... second - are you using a wired mouse? - MAME might not recognize a wireless mouse third - are you using a mouse or a trackpad? - again, MAME might not recognize a trackpad
I basically said screw it, saved up some money, and bought some silicon graphics machines from a guy that was trying to get rid of a lot. I now have a handful of o2s, some octanes, about six or so Indies, and five indigo2s

You seemed to really struggle using this version of blender, even worse than I did with blender 2.0, I bet this version is a learning curve for those of us 3.0 users. I'd love to see you actually try to make like, a complicated scene in this emulator, I'm very interested to see if it can actually pull it off or if it would just be a miserable lag fest lol
im working on a video to emulate IRIX at 95-100% speed might actually do smth on blender then
IMPORTANT: to reduce boot time, open a terminal window on root and type: chkconfig esp off
well ill be damed .... for years ive been searching for the posibility to run irix on pc with no solution and here you manage it through mame, i would never have expected that hehe cool video inded and nice that you made a guide on how to get it working have you found other solutions to run irix on pc some that maby deliver some better performance now adays we are running 4+ghz machines and still you tell that you can run like half speed of the old indy 100 mhz , have you seen any posibilities to run anything at a faster phase ? or is it mame here that sets the limit for the speed
honestly... idk i need to do more research on this and make a new video but im pretty sure that mame is at fault here so... mame tries to emulate the hardware of the SGI Indy and it can only do that at slower speed?
@@alpenstormYT yes mame is an emulator and theres diffence in running an entire os system then running old arcade games but ofcause it runs more smooth on a real sgi. i have testet and found op to blender 2.49a working on my Sgi O2 and in that you can also edit and do more stuff simular to newer versions vs the old vs 1.0 wich is very limited
ive managed to get irix running at 93-99% speed on the latest version of mame, but the chd corrupts on first boot. when i have a fix ill make a video :D

I can't open CDRom, I keep getting a "CDRom is unloaded" message.
did you use cmd? did you use the --cdrom flag with your cdrom filename after it? it may be from mame, try reinstalling it?

I dont know another emulators running IRIX but popular options are MaxxInteractive Desktop or MAME@@alpenstormYT

Helpful video. Why are you smashing your mouse buttons?!? Just have to press, not smash. Your finger shouldn't lift off the mouse to press a button. To smash?? Then yes, lift finger as high as you can away from the mouse, just to tap a button.

you will have to pair the mouse and then allow the app in system prefs and then follow steps
@@alpenstormYT i paired the mouse with my macbook it works fine but when i open the usb overdrive application the application cant find my mouse i set the scroll up to click but it dosent work i also set it to any mouse still no response
@@The141ss does it work with a different mouse? try going to system prefrences, to privacy, then see if usb overdrive is blocked it might just not work with bluetooth

i've tried it on newer versions but this method didn't work you could try, but it might corrupt the chd
