WHAT NOT TO DO when applying varnish.

An important PSA about varnish porn Here’s a brief rundown of how to properly apply the type of varnish I’m working with. Keep in mind- There are many types of varnishes and methods for applying different ones to different surfaces over different mediums. 1. Dust the surface. I usually use a lint roller. 2. Make sure your varnish was mixed well beforehand. If you shake your liquid varnish that ...

Getting a feel for the latest addition to the theremin board, the limited edition #missionofburma #vertigotremolo from #sourceaudio ! I had a lot of fun trying this pedal out and seeing what wacky things I can do with it. (P.s. I know my posture is terrible, I've been neglecting my theremin practices lately and was just having some unscripted fun, so shhh😬)

Awsome
Thanks for this! I needed to review these terms for my art class, but my notes weren't super clear on the distinction between the two, so this helped lots. Me & my essay on Cupid and Psyche thank you
So nervous to start oil painting but luckily just found your RUclips channel. Thanks for sharing stuff with us!

Any chance we could see a demo of the Ravish Sitar pedal?
@@wagnewbeef I believe there is a quick snippet of one on my IG page from when I first got the sitar pedal, but I just did a teeny little bit of messing around and didn't go unto it much. I could be persuaded to make a long one!
instagram.com/tv/CjVtChAttZT/?igsh=MWQwaGNiM2ttZHp3eg== ah yeah here it is
@@toiletfireart Awesome, thanks for that! I think I'm going to limit myself to just one massive EHX pedal for now to save space - been using the Talking Machine with great results!
I really want to learn the theremin and one day perform at my local burn events as a passionate amateur( this is a several year long goal!) it’s really hard to find resources on the theremin, I also play five string banjo and have found lots of resources for that but have had so much trouble with finding the same resources for theremin!
It is very difficult to find any resources. If you search for most anything, you get a rudimentary introduction video. Might I recommend Carolina eyck? She's phenomenal, has a few short videos, and she does teach lessons virtually! I've never had a lesson with her but she's an amazing player!
Criminally underseen video/channel! Very helpful on my Theremin journey. Love seeing an alternative approach to technique and sound. Thanks very much, keep it witchy 👹
Send it send the signal through a line mixer and lower the gain. You can see where it clips in real time and adjust it accordingly. It’s the same thing you would do with any electronic instrument/synthesizer when processing them through guitar effects.
@VaccumBlister6 Always gotta have the mixer in there for performances! In my experience, using it before the pedals can make it a bit noisy if the gain is lowered too much (for this particular instrument and for my particular set up). So I use the volume pedal before the rest of the pedals and send that out to a mixer. The volume pedal is helpful in this situation because theremins don't have volume control. The "volume" knob on a theremin just control the responsiveness of the antenna not how loud of quiet the instrument actually is. Plus the volume pedal is much more compact for travel and allows me to cut off wacky swells and repeats when necessary.
So my complete set up usually goes pedals, di, into the mixer. I'd love to get a rack set up at some point, but equipment is expensive 😅
so yellow face tattoos are dangerouser?
You can have a little yellow face tattoo, as a treat 💛. All of my tattoos containing any yellow have faded. Skin doesn't seem to take yellow very well. Especially if you're already on the yellow-er side.
@@toiletfireart when i finally pick/draw my face tattoos i will make sure to add a bit of yellow. haha. so far my yellow is holding up but its not all that old yet and i am something between ultra pale pink and so white im see through.
I immediately think of the yellow flowers of several common members of the Asteraceae plant family (previously called the Compositae). Like some of those you showed in the video. Though I go for the weedier ones like dandelion and sow thistle. Yellowbelly was also the nickname for people from Lincolnshire, because of the yellow waistcoats the soldiers of the Lincolnshire Regiment wore. I was born in Nottinghamshire, so green was more relevant. Giallo is the name of a genre of horror novel and film in Italy, from the dominant colour of the covers of the books.
I love that you came in with some fun additional facts that were personal to you💛. I had a list a mile long and always have to be careful when I curate these videos to keep them short, sweet, and to the point. Color history/theory excites me and I could talk for dayssss. I'm definitely a huge chromophiliac.
@@toiletfireart There is a lot of yellow in the world. I loved your vignette. Though, purple is my theme. If you have the motivation, the time and the mental balance, why not make a 90 minute ode to a colour? When I write articles, I get carried away and include absolutely everything obsessively. Who cares? Probably only my mum and one random stranger who wanted to know how much sun that obscure plant needs ever reads them. My joy is in the creation. I sometimes warn people of the length in the introduction. I try to sleep, eat and drink water appropriately, especially if I have to go to work as well. It can be difficult when the muse has me in their grasp. I only once had to phone in sick because I stayed up all night researching.
the self oscillating thing with the Memory man is pretty crazy!!
I would love to see more pedal demos. buying a pedal based off a guitar demo can be a bit of a gamble.
Buying a pedal FOR GUITAR from a guitar demo is a gamble! Most of the demo videos are some guy rambling for 20 minutes about who-gives-a-shit and then he plays some generic white guy blues riff. We need more creative demos where people just shut the hell up and show us the dang pedal!
Also if there's anything in particular you'd like to see let me know! Requests are always welcome and if I don't have it, there's a good chance I can borrow it!
@@toiletfireart im on a quest for a vocoder pedal. so if you would like to do one or more of the EHX v256, EHX voice box, boss vo-1, or if you know of or can think of any that might fall in that class of things. i tried the tc helicon talkbox synth but it didnt get along well with my dynamic mics and was overall kind of disappointing.
More pedal demos for a theremin is always good! 📻
There certainly aren't enough! One day I hope to have a rack set up as well, but for now pedals will do.
Spooky and fantastically far out. Well done! Let's see that geetar pedal breakdown!
Will do! I may have to make some demos of the cv controls as well!
That was fascinating. I would love to see your guitar pedals demonstrated.
You got it! There are so many I may have to do them in batches!
Learnijng to do by learning what not to do....very Zen☯️
A stunning twenty first century update on Charlotte Perkins Gilman's 1892 masterpiece "The Yellow Wallpaper." Both Harrowing and lovely your performance art is brilliant. After Francesca Woodman died now one could get the visual poetry of the abject quite right with all its gorgeous messiness except maybe Kathy Acker. In so many of your videos you take us there. I think your art is brilliant across all your disciplines.
This is teaching at its stunningly engaged, engaging and brilliant best. You take a neglected subject incredibly important to art, color theory and our sense of the visible world and bring it alive in with such creative exuberance and brilliance. I've loved art my life and have spent a lot of my life in museums and have read widely about the history and working of pigments, but that had to be the most informative one minute and sixteen seconds ever. Sienna will never be the same, and more importantly, in a subtle but quite beautiful sense will art. Thank you for your genius and artistry here. Stunning performance.
If you find you have impedance problems then look at something like a ReAmper box. These are high quality audio transformers in a box with a load of ways to connect and control. Radial, Walrus Audio, Warm Audio all make them.
Reamping for recording is very useful! Using a DI during live performances through a PA is definitely the way to go. My solution works well for me, especially during live performances. For most of my videos, I use the cameras audio, which obviously isn't the best quality, but people get the point. When I have the space and resources, I hope to set up a recording space for some better quality performances, and a reamp box is definitely on that list. Walrus audio makes great stuff!
very cool!
👏👏👏
Do you have any fav books on the spirituality of creativity ?

A similar pigment problem is found in the powdered colours thrown around in the Holi festival in India. Many of the traditional plant-based pigments were safe and also recommended for cosmetic and medicinal use. The cheap modern synthetic pigments cause many skin and eye reactions. Hopefully none of them are using cadmium. A ban on cadmium paint was proposed in Europe in 2014 but was abandoned as artists were very insistent that they needed it and would not be polluting the environment as it is very expensive and they would be very careful.
I almost made mention of this, as that purplish powder on the typewriter is gulal! For those at home who may not be in the know, the colorful pigments thrown during holi (A springtime festival in India where people throw colored powder at eachother. Lots of fun!) is called gulal, and as Pat the Plant mentioned, they used to be derived from natural sources. Luckily, they have been paying attention to the toxicity of cheaper synthetic pigments during their festivals, and many people have since returned to using the natural stuff. And thank goodness that ban didn't go through, I NEED my cadmium. Many paints are toxic, and banning one is silly. I mean, I still use lead ground for crying out loud. (BTW lead ground is by far the best). As long as people are responsible, then I don't see an issue with using the toxic stuff. I am just so sick of seeing people who don't know any better influencing others to be careless. I've seen comment sections of people who post videos like that and they are definitely not educating people. Some might not even know themselves, which I find shocking.
@@toiletfireart The answer to cadmium pollution is obviously to never throw away any art.
@@pattheplanter hehe ❤ I second that! Never throw out art. I'm slightly more concerned about the levels that come from plastics, burning fossil fuels, coal, batteries, and all the other crap. Paint isn't even on the radar compared to those things. Plus I use oils, because they're more environmentally friendly. None of that gets washed down the sink like with acrylics or creates microplastics in the oceans.
I love ❤ your bucket 😍 hat your sutch a babe... BIL
I was just hoping you'd play the theme from Star Trek :P
I didn't understand because you didn't close with Good Vibrations....

You've never heard of a Thereminist?
@@helenrapoza2420 well I have now of course…
You’re an super interesting person, aporecuste your individuality
Looks like the volume pedal is the way to go. I often use one in my pedal chain for volume swells (to simulate violin sounds), but a lot of studio guitarists use one to keep their volume consistent with other instruments.
My nephew has autism, and has difficulty with fireworks, so he wears earplugs when the family goes to see them. He's actually adjusted very well over time and has learned to handle visual and auditory stimuli, but it is not so easy for others with more severe autism. It is a concern, and perhaps performance artists need to think a bit more about this. Extreme volume has always bothered me. I'm a guitar player who plays Drone and Doom Metal at the most quiet levels possible, because I do not want to damage my hearing. I always recommend people wear earplugs at concerts due to the overly loud sound pressure.
I'm clueless: I thought theremin's had volume control. Is there any to add it? It would be the most elegant solution. I'm guessing the pedals see your line-level output like an active pickup guitar (low impedance) but with the preamp way set too powerful. Guitar volume pedals are annoyingly confusing. Is it affecting your tone? The passive pedal should be low impedance (25k not 250k) to match your ouput. An active pedal would never affect your tone but is expensive.
Ah, good question. So the volume knob on a theremin doesn't work quite the same way as other instruments. It has nothing to do with your line level. The volume knob on a theremin controls the responsiveness of the volume antenna. Set it one way and you get a snappier response range. The other way gets you a broader range that is more dynamic. The volume knob doesn't actually control how loud or quiet it is.
@@toiletfireart ok interesting. I'm thinking that there must be a cheap low-z potentiometer you can buy and attach somewhere (or more expensive headphone amp.. no idea where'd you put it, but you'd get multiple outputs if you want!). You adjust it once for the setup. That frees up your more useful pedal to put at the end of the chain for volume swells and master volume control.
Maybe a JHS Little Black Box is the $65 but professional looking solution to add a volume knob to the theremin.
@jasonjayalap hmm, I'm not really sure why you'd want to use a volume pedal with a theremin that way? It's not doing anything your left hand doesn't do. I'd perhaps use it with one of my pedals that has an output for an expression pedal, like the rainbow machine. 🌈
@@toiletfireart oops, right. I was thinking like a guitarist, where you might give distortion one volume but then want a second volume at the end.
Use a gate or a compressor, they're specifically made to prevent the overload and thus the clipping.
Both are considerable options! But the gate cuts things off too abruptly, like the delay and reverb, and ruins the decay, and the compressor makes it sound thinned out and trashy.
this was cool to learn from! thanks!
You're welcome, thank you for watching 💛
This was informative Thanks
You are very welcome ☺
the more i try to stand still the more i look like a toddler that needs to pee so i bought a stool.
100% haha. I do have a crappy barstool I use for practice because standing that still for long periods of time is impossible/murder on my knees!
@@toiletfireart you aint kidding there. most people really underestimate how difficult it is to not move
I was really struggling with this, my solution ended up being a thing called a passive reamp box (got mine from walrus audio), so now when i sound like shit its only me to blame
Walrus audio makes great stuff! How is that working out for you? Does it thin the sound at all? I have been curious about making that upgrade and using my passive volume pedal elsewhere (as intended). I find the adjustment so easy in louder, live settings. It's a bit of an investment and I would love to know more from folks with experience before I took the financial plunge and got one.
@@toiletfireart so far it doesnt seem to thin it out, but im getting slightly inconsistent results (max output volume changes depending on the day) as well as my theremin isnt fully analog. getting a lostvolts 4 next month to see if analog makes a difference. I suspect its my theremin rather than the reamp box though (i need to make a preset for the theremin for testing purposes, but im lazy). it definitely does play better with guitar pedals though, especially older ones or cruder circuits like fuzzes.
@GillamtheGreatest hmm interesting... I don't know much about the lostvolts theremin, and idk what theremin you have now, but it sounds like it could be a theremin output issue. Honestly, I love the volume pedal because if I have any issue due to some variable, it's just a quick fix with my foot. I've found different pedals behave differently to the theremins output, and of course, the different places you set up are all going to make your instrument react differently. I go between pedals a lot and play a lot of different places, so those quick adjustments I can make when I don't have to pry myself away mid performance is crucial. I know you CAN switch a pot to decrease the output level to a more pedal complaint level (more like a guitar so the output level doesn't overwhelm the pedal, which is not intended for so much output from the theremin, hence the clipping, as I'm sure you know). I have just never tried it and don't personally know what effect it would have on the sound or if it would have one.
@@toiletfireart I may have sweet talked a guitar center rep into giving me a substantial discount on a claravox the year it came out when it was still at its intro price and then maxed out my guitar center card with a no interest financing offer, that i am still paying on. I finally lugged it into the other room and programmed in a preset with the editor, and that seems to have gotten things more consistent at least. if i understand correctly volume pedal is essentially a volume pot while a reamp is a transformer with a pot after it? it says something about isolating the two signals, then you can separate the grounds of the the pedal chain and the theremin when you flip a switch, and that seemed to help too. pedal definitely would be better for live situations and on the fly stuff though. I wonder if i could modify or make something like that? i think all this stuff is passive electronics and basic circuits, so it shouldnt be rocket surgery.
Can't you just lie down while playing if you want the perfect stillness? A little alteration to the stand. If you want the audience to see you (and your wonderful costumes), you could use a mirror.
😂 I'm not 100% sure if you're being funny but this made me chuckle. But JUST IN CASE you are serious (no judgment) that wouldn't work because the electromagnetic field of the pitch antenna needs a clear six foot radius. And I wouldn't be able to move my arms or body properly to play notes.
@@toiletfireart My specialist subject is botany, not physics. That's why I asked an expert. I also thought it might be funny. 🙃If small movements of the torso can affect the tones, would you get different notes if your body was further away from the antenna? Say, lying on a wooden table?
@@pattheplanter Hehe I got a good chuckle out of it, thank you!! Unfortunately lying down isn't an option because you have to be within the range of the 0 beat field to be able to play a scale properly, and you need the freedom of arm movement. It'd be like, if a drummer or a pianist or something tried to play their instrument lying down. Lots of bruised elbows

Thank you, TF , for producing and presenting your videos. I'm new at painting and old in years. Too poor for school. Your vids are entertaining and help with my process. 🎉🤔🙏

Facinating 🎉Learning about conductive paint. Something I never knew. Might be important for other things as well. Thank you 🙏
Facinating. I know very little about Theremin music. It would scare me when it appeared in sci fi movies as a kid back in the 60s. Im glad to see it's still around 😮🎉🎉🙏
I have always been methodical and a slow painter. Everything about the process takes time. Hastily dumping varnish at the very end seems counter intuitive. I learned something here about why I wouldn't do that. Thank you TF, for all your contributions to artists like myself who want to believe their art might last awhile. Old men like me who, perhaps, don't have enough time left to go to art school, and no money even if they did. 😂🎉😊🙏
Thank you for watching! I'm happy to know some of these videos I make help other artists out there! Self-educated artists can be just as valid and knowledgable as those who paid for art school. Sometimes even more so because they had to work harder to navigate their field. If you haven't read it, I highly recommend getting yourself a copy of The Artists Handbook. It's been around forever, and is a must have for any artist!
Wait what I didn’t know someone sold an invisible sculpture lmfaoooooooo. It’s so weird. I have a super eccentric and out of the box personality (cringe af to self diagnose I know) But I honestly don’t really rock with modern art. Of course I love all art and a lot of modern art is amazing. But it’s just like okay we get it ur ironic. It has no redeeming qualities. I just came across Arthur Danto’s book the end of art. I think I need to read it lol. Have you checked it out?
Trying to learn about philosophy and art is so goofy when there aren’t even canonical definitions for basic stuff. Eventually when I started writing more and more I’m just like omfg fine I’m making my own definitions so I can move forward and discuss the subject lol
Love the use of color hot af
