    The killer in the UK is tax, its insidious, it just creeps up and up and up, and its everwhere and at every turn, if it were only on PAYE we could all live a lot happier, but its NI, fuel, VAT, car tax, etc, want an extention on your house? The government will want their cut as well, its not even finished when you die, the tax man should really do the decent thing and come to your funeral as again he's after another slice. Then we have the privatisation of utilities which has been an absolute disaster and we've ended up with energy providers basically racketeering to the point they are all being hit by windfall tax (i work for one of these companies). Every turn you go round you lose another slice of your modest pie. Governments dont have to adhere with the basic principal of outgoings balancing incomings or you'll lose your house, they dont worry about balancing the books they just increase the burden on the cash cow known as the tax payer, meanwhile the big corporations pay nothing.

    • @CourtneyJonesFinancial
      @CourtneyJonesFinancial 6 дней назад

      @@nobbytart27 without getting too political I think a lot of people agree with this. The problem with having fully global businesses is that if the UK government isn't competitive for business tax, then they can just leave altogether. Harder for citizens to uproot and move, especially after Brexit, so it's an easy lever to pull. Not saying I agree with tax increases, but this is probably the reasoning. Let's hope things turn around. But for now I just try and focus on what I can control in my own personal finance to better things. Appreciate the comment 🙏

    Oh how I wish for a salary like that! I'm on about 35k at the moment with a mortgage of 500 and rent of 400 (shared ownership). Money is quite tight, you probably have more savings in a single month than I have in the entire year. And I don't even pay into a pension either as I just can't afford to.

    • @CourtneyJonesFinancial
      @CourtneyJonesFinancial 7 дней назад

      @@lonerider543 £35k is a good salary. With shared ownership you're on the path to full homeownership in future too. Never intended for this to be a disheartening video, just one to show how I budget. It's important to focus on what we do have, rather than what we don't. A budget is always helpful for me to see where I can save and invest, so hopefully you could use this method to do the same. You're doing better than me when I first purchased my house so whatever you goal is for future, if you keep focused and work at it you'll get there. Appreciate you sharing. You're getting fleeced on your internet and sim. I'm paying £60 total for 70mb line plus a pixel 8 normal with uncapped, unlimited EE 5g and just damage insurance. If your broadband and phone line is the same company they usually give significant price reductions and, also, upgrades.

    Vehicles are a weird one. I come from the Robert Kiyosaki school of "if it takes money our your pocket, it's (usually) a liability". But like you said, you could sell them & receive a decent lump sum. Which inherently means they have monetary value (as all assets do)

  • @michael43567
    @michael43567 7 дней назад

    Man you're killing it, especially with the pension. I currently contribute the minimum. I understand that saving for the future is important, but I've also learned that money today is worth more than money tomorrow (due to inflation). So my (attempted) logic is, I want as much of my wage now, so that I can invest more money now & take advantage of compound interest. With the hope that I'll then be able to purchase a house, THEN contribute more to my pension. What do you think about this Courtney? (Note, I'm 25 so that's why I'm a bit more risk loving atm). I also don't like the idea that pension money is locked up until 65 (or whatever the age of retirement is nowadays).

    • @CourtneyJonesFinancial
      @CourtneyJonesFinancial 3 дня назад

      I can't give advice on this of course. But in my opinion, you'll struggle to make a bigger investment gain than the raw tax saving made contributing to a pension, especially at the 40/45% bracket. This is then invested anyway and can be taken 25% tax free lump on retirement (up to £1m). So it's a really tough call. Depends what you value like you said. I personally try and put as much of my 40% taxable income in my pension as possible.
