Architecture is an easy enough subject to understand (also to teach), so lets not overcomplicate things.
Toledo for Architects 2
Toledo has an abundance of fabulous architectural experiences. In this video we have a quick look at the former mosque (and then church) of Cristo de la Luz before paying a visit to the biggest show in town - the Cathedral. There's so much to see in the Cathedral that a short video doesn't do it justice. The only thing to do is to go and see it for yourself.

St Pierre Haut de Cagnes

This little church is located in the village of Haut de Cagnes which is about twenty minutes from Nice in the south of France. It's one of those little architectural gems you come across from time to time in the most unexpected places. The most curious thing about it is that you enter it at the gallery level and then take a stairs from the balcony down to the nave. It actually has a double nave...

Toledo For Architects 1

Toledo is a little off the beaten track but for such a small town it's full of buildings of real architectural quality - some of its buildings are amongst the best you'll find anywhere. In this video we'll visit three buildings you mightn't know an awful lot about. In a later video we'll talk about it's best building - the great gothic cathedral.

Ecological Architecture: The Brise Soleil
Просмотров 2,4 тыс.Год назад
Just because a building is 'ecological', that doesn't mean it has to be dull. The process of designing a building to sit comfortably in its context is full of possibilities and there are many opportunities to create aesthetically satisfying spaces. One approach that continues to reward investigation is the use of the brise soleil. We've been protecting buildings from the radiant heat of the sun...
Architecture: Keep it Simple
Просмотров 2 тыс.Год назад
At it's core, architecture is simple to understand: it's the arrangement of space for the common good. But we've overcomplicated things and now it's lost it's sense of purpose. I'm suggesting we have a sensible, straightforward and clearheaded discussion about architecture: what it's for, and how to teach it.

This is a guide to Rome for architects and for people who have a deep interest in architecture and culture. Most of the really cool stuff in Rome is for free or inexpensive to access and doesn't have crowds even in high summer. We'll be doing a couple more on Rome, and adding some other cool cities a little later.

What Is Architectural Space?
Просмотров 6 тыс.2 года назад
What is 'architectural space'? Is space something that we can define? Or is it too complicated to understand? I argue that there is a way of understanding what we mean by 'architectural space', but we have to be a bit less western in our thinking.

Thanks a lot. I'm writing an essay about this topic for a Bachelor thesis and it was really helpful :)
Thank you for explaining it in much simpler language! And the examples from the movies and paintings were amazing; they really helped me understand the theory much better.
Doesn't the Aviva Stadium count as a top-class sporting venue?
I’m surprised that I just discovered this account. It’s great .. really great.. I think Mr Garry you need support from graphic experts who can be partners with you and take your presentations to another level. What’s presented is good enough but if you want to attract more subscribers you need just a bit more. Good luck. 😊
Thank you! It is helpful to understand the idea of Transparency!
What does the grid have to do with the Concept ??
very helpful!
Hello sir, I have participated on that course on udemy, but one of the videos which is 40 minutes, sound is off. Is there any way that I could do something about it?
Hi Ibrahim, just had a look - the sound is playing on the videos when I view them from my end. Can you tell me which one it is and I'll see what I can do.
How interesting! Congrats on the video and the amazing idea!
Very impressive! Thank you!
7:20 phenomenal transparency
Great video thanks. Live in Inishowen, Donegal where the tower houses have served both the purpose of defense and aesthetic.
Cheers, must head up there and have a look
thank you so much fantastic topics
♥
An effective presentation provided by an excellent presenter
Thank you very much Brian. Much appreciated!
These in succession may teach what I need
Cheers Brian. Hopefully the videos will get you sorted. Thanks again
Gonna watch this again. I think it can help my idea. Ty
Cheers Brian. Glad you found the video useful!
Very good explained.
Cheers Paul!
You do know you live The oldest City In Europe that is still that has never been moved in over a thousand years.✌️🦘☘️👍
Yeah James, it's pretty old alright. I think one or two others have a pretty strong claim to the title
nice work sir
Thank you Kamram!
How much is all this really gonna cost us. The Irish tax payers .
Have visited Neuschwanstein and all Gaudi’s works in Barcelona Gaudi work is far more organic and inspired by nature and it’s forms. Hard to believe that almost a century since his death that our landscape is blighted with such unimaginative building forms. I live in a house built in 1853 with high ceilings and good size rooms and they are a far cry from the 2.4 derisory heights found in most homes being built today. It’s as if there was a tax on height when all it takes is another couple of courses of concrete blocks. Niggardly uninspiring and mean approach. It’s shocking what passes for architecture today
Completely agree with you about ceiling heights - why are all ceilings in all houses in all parts of the world the same height? And completely flat?
You had me up as far as “mother and baby homes”!
thank you for an informative video! gained lots of insights just from this.
@paengea Thanks so much for the comment! I'll be putting some more material on the channel in the coming months, hopefully you'll get the time to check them out!
Great video
Thanks!
Someone with vision at last. It sounds great, but I think housing our homeless should be a priority. Then all those suggestions would be brilliant.
Actually you're dead right. Housing should be number one on the list. The right to a decent place to live should be in the constitution. If we can't make sure everyone has a house, then what are we ever at?
Would it be easier to build a few Drug treatment Centres and mental hospitals.
Very nice, I am now doing a project where i need the analyse the building in detail. This was very helpful to get me started
Glad it helped! Hope you get an A!
Just clean the streets, and empty the bins.
Good man Anthony! I should have put that in the video as well!
Great video garry
Cheers Horens!
Great ideas! I would also make O'Connell Street more like the Champs Elysées...upmarket shopping with lovely cafes...perhaps even pedestrianise
Hi Orlagh, yeah we really need to think very seriously about O'Connell Street. It used to (almost) work back in the day but we seem to be going backwards. I'm not sure that introducing the Luas was a great idea
great video well put together thanks very much
Many thanks for your comment. Really appreciated!
🐺🦄
This was so helpful!
Thank you so much Shifa! Glad it was of use.
Great presentation Garry! Been a long time since I watched your videos!
Thanks so much for the kind comments! I really appreciate it.
THANKYOUUUUUU! I love that you bring your own case study and bridge to other discipline to explain the idea!
Thank you Chrissie, I appreciate your comment. I take it you're an architect? Or are you working in film?
Awesome video by the way, I really liked the practical part where your friend shows his ideas
Cheers Max. Sorry I'm only getting around to responding now, I was pretty busy over the past few weeks.
I bet someone has done it already but could we make a natural Brise Soleil using specific plants that would climb on some kind of frame?
Yes, this has been attempted quite a few times. It's a really nice way to make a brise soleil.
@@garrymileyarchitect can you give an example of a building where this was used? I couldn't find anything
@@maxfrompoland2720 Check out this page www.pinterest.com/anthonysvelto/plant-brise-soleil/ you'll find several examples. Traditionally, vines and similar plants have been trained to grow over pergolas so that their leaves provide protection from the sun in the summer months. You find this quite a bit in Mediterannean countries
@@garrymileyarchitect that's very helpful. Thanks!
I can see that you put a lot of effort in this channel and I'm very happy about it. Looking forward to more good quality content : )
Yes, I'd like to make things more interactive. I was thinking of maybe having a forum on Discord where students could show some work and we could discuss it. What do you think?
@@garrymileyarchitect i World appreciate it
Maybe we'll try something in September. I'll keep you posted
@@garrymileyarchitect That is an awesome idea, a place to relax, chat but also work and tips from others
@@maxfrompoland2720 That's the idea. As soon as I get a bit of free time I'll try to think it through
Hi Gary, very interesting. I am looking forward to hear more. Christian
Cheers Christian. I'm working on a few ideas - hopefully we'll get something worthwhile going!
muy interesante
You're very welcome!

Some great ideas here, especially about relocating the Dail back to its original location 👌
Cheers Mark. Yeah, I really do think moving the Dail back to College Green is something we should think seriouslly about. The old Parliament building is right in the very centre of the city and there's nothing going on there at all. It's a lovely building but it makes no contribution. There's a lot we could do in Dublin (the other cities too) to make life more exciting but there doesn't appear to be any ambition whatsoever.
Enjoyed the video! I hope to visit Rome at some point this year. Can you do something on Paris at some point? I visited Paris back in June. I enjoyed the nice avenues and found it very walkable too, I mostly stayed around Saint Germain and Montparnasse.
Thank you for the nice comment! Yes, we plan on making one on Paris but it may take a little while. It's fun making the videos but they take a bit of time. I'm planning to make one about some of medieval towns to the north of Paris like Rouen. They're really amazing little towns with lots of interesting architecture but somehow manage to be under appreciated.

These explanations and definitions mean the world to me. It's been so hard to find a teacher with a true sense of how and why humans use space. I really struggled in a formalist setting and quit architecture school. I truly appreciate your Udemy course and these videos.
Hi Ciara, what a wonderful comment! I really do appreciate it. I honestly feel that, when it comes to architecture, we've kinda lost our way. We need to get back to our fundamental understanding of why we make space in the first place: it's not about architecture, it's about life. I'm working up a few more videos to put together by the end of the summer. Hope you enjoy them! Don't give up on architecture - just battle through the formalism and when you get your degree, you'll get your chance to share your ideas. Thanks again!
