Congratulations!!! What an achievement! Honestly, when I left you at Warner Springs when Sandra picked you up...I wondered about your progress and then I started checking in on these video posts while we were in Europe and camping in CA. Actually, you've been hiking the PCT longer than we were gone. We left May 26 and just got back Oct. 3--we were sightseeing while you were hiking 20+ miles every day!!! Incredible! I have a question...in many of your posts you seemed to be hiking and camping completely alone. I have only hiked at the beginning of the PCT and wonder when the crowds start to thin out. Maybe I would get used to camping and hiking alone but having someone to talk to really makes the miles go by and made me feel more comfortable knowing someone is within shouting distance. Approximately how many days/nights were completely solo compared to having someone with you or not very far away?
At a high level I hiked solo for the first 31 days then formed a group (trail family from days 21 to 99) at which point I split off and hiked solo again from days 100-152. If you want to hike with a group or trail family, it is very easy to form or join a group especially during the desert or,, the sierras. If you prefer hiking solo like I did there are generally a good number of people on the trail and doesn't really start thinning out until Oregon. I would generally only go 1-4 hours per day without seeing another person while hiking, even up north. The longest stretch I went without seeing another person was 36 hours and that was getting on a trail section that just opened up after a fire closure. Even with that section there were a group of 5 that got a ride from town to the trailhead, the others camped near the trail head, and I chose to go ahead by myself and managed to stay ahead of everyone. I could have just as easily chosen to hike with the group or slowed it up to keep them nearby. As for camping I didn't mind camping with a couple of other people around but really enjoyed the solitude when I could find a spot all to myself. That said I only managed to camp alone maybe 40% of the nights when I was hiking solo but I could have found another sight around others if I wanted to for most nights. I liked mixing it up and hiking with a trail family for part of the time and hiking solo for part of the time. Bottom line is you can hike whatever type of hike you want.
This has been so fun and nice to go along with you on this adventure!!! I grew up in the Tahoe area and got to hike the PCT quite a lot, but never had the opportunity to run the entire thing. Always wanted to, but just never was able to put it all together (life got in the way for me). So it's been nice to ride along with you and see areas I've been on the trail (40+ years ago)! Fantastic hike and well done!!!
Thanks for watching, and it is never too late. I've been wanting to thru hike the entire trail for over 20 years and finally was at a point in my life to go for it. Happy trails!
Great job to you AND Sandra! Thank you for the info breakdown here, to better know what to expect when on the trail. See you on down the trail sometime!
Glad it was helpful! Happy Trails!
Congratulations! Thank you so much for documenting your journey! And your pictures at the monument were hilarious-glad you don’t take yourself too seriously.
Glad you enjoyed it! Happy trails!
Congratulations Chuck!😊
Thank you!
Hey Congrats Night Owl! Love the little bonsai tree in your campsite.
Thank you!
I’ve followed your whole journey. I’m so happy for you! I hope to do some significant section hiking in the near future but no thru hiking for me-I’m just not tough enough to endure crappy weather. But I’ve enjoyed your perspective and will miss your videos.
Thanks and good luck with your future section hikes but don't underestimate yourself. I truly believe most hikers in reasonable physical condition are tough enough to hike the entire trail. While not perfect every day the PCT generally has phenomenal weather - the key is to "Embrace the Suck"!
Yeah, that's the problem with ultra light gear. Shoe's are the worst. But an interesting video.
Really liked the old gold mining artifacts!
Always fun to discover something unexpected on the trail!
Just spotted your vid at the Bridge of the Gods. I like your presentation...no fancy techniques, just showing things how they are. Ugh.. electronics are crazy inducing! By the way, that's the Columbia River. 🙂 All the best for your remaining PCT.👍
Thanks for watching and yes, I mis-spoke a number of times (my wife would catch most of them during editing)
Lovely views of Shasta!
Yes, Mt Shasta dominated the landscape for a couple of weeks!
Those are ant lion insect sand traps. They dig those smooth holes and wait buried at the bottom for ants to fall in. The ants can't climb the smooth sides of the sand trap. Also the sand lion will spit or fling sand at the ants to knock them down into the ant lions' waiting Jaws. They are pretty fascinating to watch them get ants...Perhaps if one was under your tent he may have been flinging sand and hitting your bottom tyvek. At least that's what they look like to me anyway.
Fascinating. The insect was buzzing under my Tyvek ground cloth for almost an hour before I got him. I also couldn't believe the number of holes the next morning - there were probably 50 to 100 under and around my tent!
Great job, 24 miles!! Glad you beat the rain. The scenery looks great!
Always an adventure!
Great job!! Hope you survived the storm!!
REALLY enjoying your channel! I grew up in the Tahoe area and the PCT was a favorite hike of mine in the summers! Spent a LOT of time in the Lakes Basin Area. Always wanted to try to do the entire trail after reading Eric Ryback's book on his trek back in the 70's. Keep up the gr8 work and good luck with the knee!!!
Thanks - I dinged up my knee a couple of times, but it always bounced back. I was continually amazed at how resilient the human body is and how many minor injuries and discomfort you can just hike through. On a long distance thru-hike like this your body becomes incredibly strong and recovers very quickly! Many other thru-hikers have echoed the same observation.
Amazing video. I like it, How can I contact you?
Glad to see you got some more calories today, and ice cream sure kept you going! So sad the mosquitos are bad, should try those mosquito wipes👍🏻
Mosquitos were bad but I preferred covering up instead of using repellant. I was in the minority but with the sun hoodie and wearing pants I didn't use a single drop of sunscreen or insect repellant the entire hike! Never got sun burn and only a few bites through my clothes but not bad. "Embrace the suck"!
I have been following your hike, bingeing your vids last 2 days...I was out on the PCT in 21' for 2 weeks-your videos are helping me to keep the dream alive! I cant wait to get back out there! Also, the video quality of the series is getting better. Dont know if that is your wifes' doing...but nice job whoever it is
Thanks! Always good to keep the dream alive and nothing beats being out on the trail. And yes, my wife spent hours running the videos thru a stabilizer - I need to double her pay!
I’ve watched other videos and I think they supplied the horn by that sign. Everyone else blew the horn that was provided.
The videos are great Chuck!
It's downhill from here
Half way to Canada
A party for the 4th of July
How did you guys lose the trail
You frequently loose the trail crossing snow fields. Most of the time you pick up on the other side but it sometimes is easy to mistake small footpaths for the trail and you always have a natural tendency to head downhill. Or maybe we are just a bunch of old guys that aren't very good at following the trail ;)
Big pothole lake
Skipper here! (And Weatherman is next to me.) We’re glad to see how far you’ve come! Definitely putting in big mileage days! We are returning home from Europe finally and weirdly I think about the PCT all the time. Trying to squeeze in the last of section be this fall. Happy trails!
Thanks for watching and hope our paths will cross again (maybe next time Sandra and I travel to AZ!)
Thanks for explaining the snow cups, I was not sure if that was just tracks from everyone!
I thought the same thing first time I saw them in pictures. Pain in the A## to walk over especially when they go for miles!
I’m still following your journey every day! Today is August 4 when you uploaded this video but I’m curious what the actual date is on your current hike. I’m wondering how you’re doing with all of the fires in Oregon.
Don't recall the exact date but I started the hike on April 15 so you could do the math. There was typically a 2-4 week delay between me hiking getting the content back home to my wife who would then edit and publish the videos. I have no idea on how other hikers found the time to edit and publish videos themselves on the trail but even they are typically a week or two behind since you can't load content until you are in town with decent wi-fi. Fires were bad in OR and WA. Was able to stay ahead of a couple but had to route around a total of 4 trail closures and deal with a lot of smoke. Fires now are just a part of thru-hiking the PCT - just like hiking across the snow or dealing with river crossings.
Tough Day, great job! I really liked the photos of the blue lakes, wonder if that is still glacier ice melting into it? Hope your finger is fine!
Not positive but I don't think there are many glaciers in this part of the Sierra's they are a little farther north. The finger stopped hurting after a few days but the nail still hasn't completely fallen off after 4 months!
Awesome job, you guys do this like a day in the park!
Yep - just a really long park!
Hello! I’m curious when you started your hike and when you plan to finish it?
Started April 15. Looking to finish around October 1st
Keep it real yo
A very busy camp site
Consider showing less of your face while you’re talking to us .
Love the pin in the map to show progress on the trail
Thanks - that was Sandra's idea.
That is the only way I eat my left-over pizza
Thanks for sharing the shoe wear at 400+ miles. Your lucky, your wear pattern is pretty even, unlike mine!
I was surprised the soles never truly wore out it was always the padding or upper mesh on each of the 4 pairs I went through.
I’m so cheap that unless I am in pain, I would not get new shoes.
I'm pretty frugal myself and only went through 4 pair of shoes the entire trip (most hikers went though 5-6). Trouble with ordering on line (which is cheaper) is that you have to allow for shipping time and plan ahead for when you will be in town for resupply. I wasn't confident my first pair would last to Kennedy Meadows (700 miles) so I replaced them in Tehachapi. Shoes are one of the most critical pieces of gear and I never carried a pair of water shoes or any type of backup.
Mount Baldy usually the last to lose its snow.
There is a side trail (blue blaze) up to Baldy but most PCT'ers skip it. Mt Badin Powell is just off the PCT and is considered the highest point on the PCT before the Sierras
I believe it’s Mount Baldy
Chuck, I have following someone else on the PCT They are a couple from back east their trail names are Java and Good Water
Don't think I've met them yet but will keep a lookout for them
Hang in their Buddy, looking good
Thanks!
Great job Night Owl!! 25 mile day with 3k incline - wow! Hey, i think the trains in Cajon pass were blowing their horns just to route you and the other hikers on 😊
Yea, that must be it...
Chuck, I had a buddy who did the PCT years ago and when he got to MD loaded up Chesse Burges and eat them for the next 3 days,
PCT'ers call that the McDonalds Challenge. Some of the youngsters were giving it a go!!
Stay strong Nite Owl! We're rooting for you and hoping you continue to conquer this trail!! You'll be home with Sandra before you know it!😊
Thank you so much!
Thanks for the education. I was wanting to be a section hiker but actually, I think I want to be more of a Lasher and I have never heard that term before. I want to do about 500 miles at a time.
Sounds great! You can also get a single permit from PCTA for any thru hike of 500 miles or more.
@@NightOwl2024PCT ok, great to know! Thanks again and keep up the good work!
This video was just recommended to me, so I’ll have to go back and look at your other videos. I find you very interesting and I totally enjoyed this! I subscribed and will continue following your journey. The best of luck to you!
Thank you so much!
Did you make water from any of the snow? Looked pretty white!
No, takes too much fuel and time to melt snow. There are other water sources available
Looking good Night Owl
Thanks!
I like your immunity building theory. Stay healthy😊
;) I was surprised how healthy and strong I felt the longer I was out on the trail.
