Looking For Alaska and The Manic Pixie Dream Girl
Hello, friends!
I hope everyone is doin' alright. This video is a mixture of me doing my makeup while reading my mid-semester essay about whether Alaska Young from John Green's Looking For Alaska is a Manic Pixie Dream Girl or not.
I'm not gonna lie, I'm not too happy with the makeup aspect of this video, but I've been wanting to make this video for a bit now so I'm telling myself to get over it! The first time I did this look it was a bit more toned down, so if you're actually interested in recreating it, I would suggest doing the same things I did in the video, but not blending the pinks so far down.
I did use quite a bit of in text citations in this video so I am going to include my wor...

Hey, I wonder if are you up to bringing more content to this channel I just loved the way you narrated the book review and would love to hear from you. Sending you positive vibes. Keep going gal ☘️
i just finished the book. the impact that alaskas death had on the whole friend group in the second half of the book was really noticable. their whole dynamic changed, and when the group found together again, I could feel her missing precense in every interaction. she is not a character that existed solely for the protagonist. also, trauma, pain and loss are very real in many peoples lifes, and it is totally okay to give some of it to your characters if it is not just an irrelevant detail to make that character interesting. the trauma of alaska is at the very center of the story (in the middle), and i do think that it was depicted in a tasteful and sensitive way. (i also like the book, and i am also very sad, since i just finished reading it -.-) the first descriptions of alaska are gross though, i am not sure if this was really necessary.
I love your tattoos !!!
Hard cover of paperback
you should make more vids
great video, would love to hear what you have been reading lately
btw, have you ever read girl interrupted?
Fun ramble 👍
I found this book sad but wholesome at the same time(:
I think the term manic pixie dream girl is more often missused than not. This was a good essay and I really enjoyed listening to it
As a dude watching this, I honestly don't understand y girls like watching ppl do makeup in youtube videos. But I guess I also don't understand so y guys like watching other ppl play video games on youtube when u can just b playin the game urself. So maybe I'm the weird one🤯
personally, i don't watch these videos because of the make up. I am mainly focusing on the content she is talking about. the make-up isnt the important factor. i only watch lets plays when the lets player talks about interesting topics. I know you don't mean that in a bad way, but i wanted to add that it's not only guys who watch lets plays and it's not just girls who watch make up videos like these. especially not if the content is interesting
I love that you are reviewing this, especially given the ban in TN. I carefully teach it to 7th graders and up. I think you did a great job with your review and I might share this with others. Kudos! I hope to stay in touch. -Matt
Great essay!
These n@zi book I like and this person does that now I sub to her stuff
One would have to be sick to let tl make a book like this destined for kids Shame on him Shame on everyone involved See any books about spanish cival war on cartel killings in mexico ? All destined for kids .no did not think so Filthy profiting off a sad part of history that needs to disappear into history .it's been talked about enougj at this stage let it go
Maybe people could understand your point if you had any grasp on grammar or spelling. I can definitely tell you don't read books. If we erase history we will never learn from it, take your kkk thinking back to your skull and bones meeting you loon.
Man... I can't believe that u are saying that being serious, is it a joke, right?
I’m just going to assume it’s a joke lol
Hey..can i read maus part 2 without reading the part 1?
Every time I find a RUclips channel that I like and I look at the most recent upload and it's 1 year+, I feel so sad. This channel is cool, real chill. Hope she, you if you're reading this bod, upload again.
Thank you so much for the review. Do you recommend this book for people above 30 years old ?

Never forget Mauschwitz 🐱🐭
But, just who in the world are you to review a graphic novel? Why should your opinion matter?
You want the Pope to review them instead? xD
this is perhaps the dumbest comment I've seen on RUclips to date. She could ask the same of you... who are you to ask who she is? Her opinion matters to her and whoever wants it to matter to them. You don't want it to matter to you.. and that is fine, but to make a statement like this demonstrates you have the mental capacity and social skills of a 6 year old. Now, put the Han Solo action figure down and go upstairs and get a hot chocolate from your mom's fridge.
I feel like a lot of readers who don’t understand the intent with Alaska really struggle with the idea of an unreliable narrator (not sure if this is really the right term here but we’re gonna go with it), which is something that John uses a lot. His narrators are dimensional and flawed and their thoughts and actions are also dimensional and flawed. Many people tend to take the narrators viewpoint as gospel when they can also have biases that influence their conclusions. Miles, Quentin, Hazel, and Aza all have flaws in their ways of thinking that they have to learn to recognize. That’s one of the main themes in much of his writing learning to see others complexly (as John and Hank would say ;))
Best review ever ❤️🌻
This really makes me want to try and read it again. I know the bullet points of the story. I tried to read it while I was in highschool but I couldn't get passed the writing. I'm also not a huge fan of John Green as a writer, all of his stories end very depressingly. I'm okay with a depressing story but I feel that at this point his writing is a bit formulaic.
tell me that isn’t marble in the back
thank you so much for this video! i am currently writing a literary analysis essay on john green and manic pixie dream girls. i initially went into my research siding more with those that believed john made consistent use of the manic pixie dream girl trope, but i see it from a different perspective now :) edit: also your makeup is poppin off!!
The video was really cool u should make more essays
I think the people who don’t understand that Miles is not a reliable narrator because he is so obsessed with his fantasy of Alaska aren’t mature enough to read the book. School teaches us that the narrator is always the good guy when it actually makes the story better when you as a reader can acknowledge that the narrative is wrong. It’s not that Alaska was put there for Miles’ character development, Miles just made it seem like she was the reason he developed as a character.
This is so true! I've also interpreted Alaska as a symbol of reckless youth and innocent freedom for the teens. Like while she's alive they keep battling the other teens at Culver Creek and sort of doing reckless, fun things. After Alaska's death they mature and realise what the meaning of life is. I think when Miles and his friends lose Alaska, they lose a certain innocence within themselves. Grieving for Alaska, is also grieving for that youthful innocence they had once. No denying that Miles sees her as "a manic pixie dream girl" that will save him, but I also think she represents that painful & necessary transition into adult life, that one grieves over sometimes.
this book helped me get over my anxiety of dying, this will foreever stay in the collection
im hoping it’ll do the same for me
Has that tapestry got anything to do with Watership Down?
very much enjoyed the essay but i’m here from tiktok and am a bit let down by the lack of romanisations peppered in there
also, any thoughts on the mini series?
I came here after seeing your tik tok and I love your essay! I also loved Looking For Alaska whilst growing up and hearing critics call it ‘misogynistic’ broke my heart because I interpreted it in a similar way to you! Thank you for putting my vague thoughts into words.
this is a very well thought out essay and the makeup looks great! I also thought I might tell you that the word bod means dick in Scottish Gaelic!
Well that’s fun! Lmfao, thank you for letting me know. Thank you for the compliments! ❤️
I really like watching your videos they are really calming for me I like to watch them while I draw and it helps me focus a lot more thank you 😊 🙏
I loved this video and your essay!! I never finished the book but I enjoyed hearing your points/arguments. PS your voice is so nice!!!
i skipped the makeup bits, but this is exceptional.
Thank you!!
Dude, this is incredibly, I love this book, i'm thinking of gifting a few copies to friends thanks
First off, wanna start by saying solid essay ! it was really good. I do believe the manic pixie dream girl trope does exist and that it’s important to call it out. However, unfortunately the term really is often overused and misused which becomes misogynistic itself. I read LFA as a kid and enjoyed it, but ngl after i grew up i realized that i didn’t like the book anymore cause my vague memories of it made me realize i didn’t enjoy the portrayal of Alaska. I left it at that, but your essay made me recall that the reason her portrayal sucks is because we are viewing it through the pov of a shitty mc and not cause the author was writing a poor underdeveloped female character. So i do think it would be wrong to find John guilty of using the trope. Though i must admit i am still iffy about the book, even tho yes alaska does have a character beyond just the mc i still feel like the friend group as a whole is john green romanticizing teenage angst and trauma
Well first off, thank you!! I totally agree that the trope does indeed exist. For example the movie I mentioned in the essay, Elizabethtown, has a female character where she really does only exist for the mc development. But yes, I still agree the trope is overused and misused quite frequently. Also, I think not liking Alaska's character is totally valid. Even if we ignore Pudge's heavy romanticization, she's still kind of a shitty person. She cheats on her boyfriend, she's very erratic, and overall just not the best person. While doing research for this essay I found plenty of people who don't particularly like Alaska's character, and I can't blame them! I want to touch on why I personally love the book so much, I think it ties in to your last point. I do believe Green creates a feeling of romanticizing the world in LFA, but it doesn't bother me much because I feel like that's what being a teenager feeeeeeels like. Like, as a teenager you tend to view the world in a dramatized way. Teenagers tend to romanticize the world as a whole, viewing things a bit more dramatic than adults would. To me, that's part of what makes the book so great. It's how Green is able to capture the absurdity of being a dramatic teenager that allows me to feel nostalgic about LFA, even now when I read it as an adult. Part of me agrees with some of the criticisms Green receives, but another part of me feels like he gets more criticism than necessary. Maybe it's due to him having such a distinct formula, causing people to feel hit over the head with it. But people who are writing realistic YA fiction, all attempt to capture the romanticized absurdity that IS being a teenager. It's just that Green does it with a formula that gets a bit old after just a couple novels. But yeah. To condense my last point, I feel like Green DOES create teenagers who romanticize teenage angst and trauma, but I believe it's due to the fact that that's what real teenagers tend to do. Thank you for such an interesting comment! :) sorry this reply is stupidly long lol
bod.jpg I actually appreciated the lengthy comment so no worries ! Yes a lot of the criticism John gets is misplaced, and I think that it’s due to his popularity. The more fame you have, the more hate u get even if it’s (sometimes) misplaced. So I think it’s fair to enjoy his novels :) I see your point about how teenagers themselves tend to dramatize/romanticize their own life, so it makes sense that a YA novel would attempt to portray that. Sorry but i’m going to sort of go on a tangent here, but bear with me heh. I myself am a huge fan of coming of age films (that are done right). I love the slice of life feeling it gives me. But for some reason i don’t share the same appreciation for YA novels. I thought it might have been a book thing, but I do enjoy literature novels, particularly Murakami’s, that tackle the same topics and are also romanticizing life. So I realized that perhaps it’s not the romanticization in general that puts me off, but how it’s used. I think it’s okay to include heavy topics, but some YA novels tend to use those topics as bait and in a way take advantage of the reader’s own romantic view of life. So in a way it feels wrong. This isn’t a researched topic (as far as i know), and i’m just talking about my own personal feelings. But yeah that’s sort of what i get from it. Sorry if this doesn’t make sense, but I hope you got what i’m trying to say even if you don’t necessarily agree with it.
This was a great essay and it reminded me of halsey’s new album manic where she discusses the topic of “manic pixie dream girl” because many critics have viewed her as such in the past.
I think your a phenomenal writer and honestly should right some books! And the makeup look is beautiful as always!! 💙
🥺 thank you. I wanna write a freakin’ book so badly!
bod.jpg I’d read it in a heartbeat!!
I thought that was a great essay! Looking for Alaska is one of my favourite books, and it's always anonyed be that people make those shallow critiques. I think John Green took the criticism pretty hard because Paper Towns is basically the same book, but it beats you over the head with the message whereas LFA is more subtle.
But the same idiots still think Margo is a manic pixie dream girl because they just refuse to get it no matter how hard he beats them over the head.
Your sheets reminded me that I have laundry I have to put in the dryer. Thank you for saving my clothes from being stinky.
Lol! I’m glad I helped you remember!
Do you ever have dreams where its like a movie, and your not you but a character in said movie? 😅 I get those a lot and they are always insane but so cool!
Never a movie, but I do frequently have dreams where I’m not myself. Like I’m a different person completely!
bod.jpg same! It’s always crazy
Girl! This is awesome!! Keep doing you and the people will come along for the ride! Also I have the weird off bathroom dreams too! Somethings always wrong with them! I dont know if it’s like, I need to pee? Or just.. weird? Haha I’ve also noticed I randomly have dreams that I remember having as a kid.. and it’s super weird, like a reoccurring dream.. but not often. It’s weird! And I forget about them until I have them again!
I have those TOO!!!!!! But instead of just re-dreaming the dream, it always continues! Like my brain does a recap, and then the old dream becomes something new. Those are wild. Like HOW.
bod.jpg okay yes!! Exactly!! They are always so trippy too!! 😅😂
Girl I miss talking about our dreams together
Wow same.
I miss YOU
Sarah Romero I MISS YOU TOO WHAT THE HECKLE
I could listen to you read the phone book. Please tell me you write or do poetry of some kind because your cadence and word choice is pointedly soothing.
I love writing! I haven’t been doing as much of it as I’d like, but it is something I throughly enjoy! Thank you!
My favorite page is the one that says I literally experienced the horrors of death so maybe this isn't about you.
