My Daddy 😢. I miss him so much 💔
Thank you! This is so informative. This answered so many questions that I have had. This needs to be shared and shown to SC history students.
Tillman had been dead for twenty years when the statue was erected in 1940. The issue here is not so much Tillman as it is the SC people who built the monument. No need for long-winded bellicose diatribes about "equality" and "racism." Let us call a spade a spade. This kind of activity is part of an ongoing cultural genocide of White people everywhere. What is next? The SC Soldier's Monument? General Wade Hampton? Please. Give me a break.
Should be wearing gloves
I am a classmate of both Patricia Scott and James Baker. We all graduated in 1959. Baker and I have been classmates from the 1st grade at Waverly Elementary School, on to Caver and then CA Johnson High. Patricia has past on but Baker and I are still in contact to this day; I in CT and Baker in Columbia.
The cleanest Mashburn site that I’ve ever seen! :) Great job Brian! Scott, it looks like you have another winner! Congrats!
Looking forward to dining. Thanks for sharing the history . . .

Really nice, want to hear more
R.i.p. Unc miss you
My Uncle Phillip ...he was my FAVORITE uncle! He would come get me every summer when I was little to come be with him and his family every year. He loved family. His daughters and wife Emma was his world. It was everything to him and he was everything to us. I will NEVER forget him. He taught me God's word and and because of that me and his girls were the best students at Sunday School lol. I thank him for teaching me more about the love of God. Love you Unc and may you rise in power. I love you so much, your Shay Shay♥️🙏🏼👑
beautiful dress!
Looking forward to our visit in spring of 2021.
Fascinating. Always wondered what Columbia, SC looked like in that era and this documents it well.
this was my uncle rest in peace phillip perry
This is my daddy. Miss him so much 💔
My ancestors endures horrible things here. There is nothing beautiful about this house. My last name is Singleton. Unfortunately I am not able to trace my history far back enough to find my real identity, thanks to the Singleton family.
Like, totally!
I LOVE TO LEARN MORE, ON BLACK HISTORY. I ENJOYED WATCHING THIS VIDEO. THANKS.
Is this man still around? If so how can I get I. Touch with him?
Historic Columbia is the best community organization I know of. Great work to Robin Waites and all of the staff.
Video doesn't tell you how to renew your membership and there is not a tab to log in as a member that I could find.
Can you explain "Add Teacher Membership for Free"
Pretty cool. Thanks!
Dam son
She looked slightly different afterwards. I hope they used non-destructive paint.
Looking forward to the tour in Sept. I finally get to see this beautiful house in person; restored to her original glory.
I lived in Columbia in1969 as part of the outdoor drama The Liberty Tree. I remember how hot and humid it was. Does anyone remember the liberty tree which was held at the sesquicentennial state park, 1969?
Looks Great!!! What a new gem!
You guys are awesome!
these are really great videos! Hope you all add new ones
I visited the Hampton-Preston Mansion and Gardens yesterday. As a woman of African decent I was hoping the tour would have been more inclusive of the contribution of all peoples. After all it was free labour that added to the wealth of the estate owners. There could be alternate tours allowing those verse in African American history to give a culturally responsive version of the estate's history. The fact that there were African Americans living and serving on the Hampton-Preston estate, means that they also contributed to its history. So why not tell it. It's 2017.
Hi, thanks so much for taking some time to reach out to Historic Columbia. We understand your concerns, which others have shared with us periodically in the past. Your thoughts are very timely, as we are on the cusp of launching comprehensive interpretive upgrades at the site. When completed next year (the 200 anniversary of the estate’s founding), the property’s interpretation will be in line with the more inclusive stories we tell in the Mann-Simons Site and the Museum of Reconstruction in the Woodrow Wilson Family Home, particularly in regard to the contributions made by enslaved persons during the antebellum period and African American citizens following the end of the Civil War. We would love the opportunity to discuss this project in greater detail. If you are interested, please email us at marketing(at)historiccolumbia.org and we will be in touch. Thanks again for your comment.
Historic Columbia, I appreciate you kind attention, and am looking forward to the pending improvements.
The Valley Park area will go back to an all white area again; the University of South Carolina is pushing to annex the five points area, so that it's students can have a "secure play-ground"......smh
Historical black communities have and are being slowly erased from the Columbia area... wake up Columbia!!!!
The camera doesn't do Andrea Mock justice!
Great approach to explaining the Mann-Simon project
Excellent, fresh fish and wonderful customer service
Oh, another thing... every morning, on the way to school, we would always see Governor James F. Byrnes taking his morning walk. I think he timed it to coincide with the influx of students, so he could wave and greet us all.
I attended kindergarten in "The Little Red School House" next to the mansion, and then 1st and 2nd grades in the mansion. Bible classes were held in the basement. There was a chapel and we all attended services (Morning Prayer) at least once a week. I was then a Presbyterian, and that gave me my first exposure to liturgical worship, which eventually led to my becoming an Episcopalian in my late teens. The sneaky way the Diocese and developers colluded to tear it down was disgraceful.
I am a fan of the Seaboard. Where is this cut you're talking about??? I live south of Charleston, SC where SAL had a high speed Race Track to Savannah. It has been gone now since just after the merger, but there is a long steel trestle here where the trains once ran.
