Howdy! I am a SFF writer and veterinarian. Welcome to my channel, where I discuss the books I've read and enjoyed lately! I am finally giving House of Leaves a try! My interest was especially piqued after watching the two videos I'm linking below, so I'd encourage you to check them out! Videos that inspi...

Third book of the children of time. Still haunts me. Great book.

Happy New Year! I'm planning to start The Sun Eater series this year, so I'm happy we'll be on this journey together! I've only read The Appeal from Janice Hallett and loved it, also hoping to read more from her in 2025. Fingers crossed for a good reading year ahead.
The outcast mage sounds pretty interesting. Im going to have to add that one to the tbr. Also going to pick up The Wood in Midwinter
@@TomOrange There were certain themes that felt quite palpable that's for sure. But there are other fun additions to liven things up. Hope you enjoy!
I look forward to hearing more of your journey through valdemar!!
Nice list, I’m middle of 5th book in sun eater series so far so good, all these books can get long winded at times, if you get past that, they improve one after the other, although half the 4th is very dark, but probably required to justify the story arc if a genocide..tbd I agree Hadrian’s actions are infuriating at times..great series so far! PS the homage to dune continues in so many way, often surprising it’s interesting
@@myanaloglife9450 In the first one I was just like, dude why did you decide to walk alone from the amphitheatre?! Are you stupid??? Lol It's been a long time since I read Dune novels but I'm looking forward to catching more references!
@ yeah the amount of silly stuff he does because he’s being hyper emotional is infuriating it doesn’t stop at least not yet, I won’t say more about the references to dune but they are non stop, a bit of Enders game/speaker for the dead also in a overall story arch..
Ursula Vernon is one of the finest writers out there. I've only recently begun working my way through her T. Kingfisher titles. I just read Paladin's Grace earlier today. What a pleasure. She and Elizabeth Bear seem to write effortlessly. That should get a laugh out of either of them.
Greg Bear's War Dogs trilogy is actually very good. It deals with aliens, ancient aliens, other alien manipulation and man's fight to fit in and understand his place and role in it all. It's all fought in our solar system, with Mars and the moon Titan as major locals. It's worth a read if this is your genre.
@@johnulmer6715 I've read the first one of that trilogy! I need to keep going
Dune sucks as well
A memory called Empire was not good as far as I am concerned
@@frankshifreen sorry to hear that. I really clocked with the audio version for some reason!
Old guy here, I thought this was awesome!! You made a comparison I didn't fully understand, but it's always nice to have something to look up!
@@mattcosgrove6105 glad you enjoyed the video!
I would recommend you to read Full Spectrum Barrage Jamming, a short story by Cixin Liu. This short story, to me is the very definition of military sci-fi.
Pleas hold up the front cover of the book for viewers, while speaking.
@@treefarm3288 I usually try to do that if I have the physical copy!
I tend to recommend Pub order because you get the chance to see her writing grow along with the world-building, and while the different series jump around in the timeline, the questions raised in one series are expanded in the next by written order. If you count By the Sword as your 'current' timeline, Arrows trilogy takes part in the middle of BtS, the Mage Winds + Mage Storms series continue forward from BtS/Arrows (and Winds/Storms are basically a two-part trilogy), then the Owl series goes further forward after a small timeskip. But you really Really need the context of The Last Herald-mage series to understand current events in Valdemar (though it is set about 500 years in the past), and you Want the context of the Mage Wars (Gryphon series, thousand or so years in the past) to understand the world, and the reasons there is so much messed up wild magic and places devastated by ancient mage battles. Though for you personally having started with By the Sword you might want to read Vows & Honor next because that is Kethry and Tarma's story (Kerowyn's grandmother and sword-grandmother) and drops you back about 60 years and will fill you in on all of their adventures with Need. It's not set in Valdemar at all but helps expand the world-building and helps you have appreciation for how odd Valdemar is with their Heralds and magic horses. Then go to Arrows and onwards in pub order. Talia's books are a good start because the main POV in a young farmgirl from a remote border area and she actually doesn't know much about her own country, so as a reader you learn with her. My hands down favorite series is The Last Herald-mage trilogy, it was written 1989-1990 and were the first books I read as a young teen that had a gay protagonist. It's won a LAMBDA Award and has had a place in my heart ever since I first read it, and I still reread it! (But fair warning, you will cry your eyes out!) And if you are interested, here is a recording of the song "Kerowyn's Ride" (there are like 8 albums of music from the books!) ruclips.net/video/Dri6vvAlDCg/видео.html
The owlsight trilogy part of the valdamar series is my favorite three books. Love the Crown of stars!! If you havent read them the green rider series is good, The Mistborn trilogy is great. Black Magician Trilogy i love. Sorry i can go on forever lol. Love you videos 👍
yay!! I plan to read Mercedes Lackey's entire backlist, so I will look forward to those. Actually, just picked up Green Rider at the used bookstore! We must be on a similar reading brainwave. I've read and enjoyed Mistborn but I hadn't heard of Black Magician trilogy. Thanks for the rec! Glad you're enjoying the videos :)
@LeeReads yea Green rider is a great series, but you can tell the story from the 5th book on gets a bit, idk, outlandish lol even for a fantasy book. I suppose I'm a sucker for the classic hero story trope. Poor commoner experiences loss or persecution. Then paves there way through the world with hard work, courage, and a bit of luck. 😜
Thankfully for me there are only a few new books coming out this year that I will make a high priority for myself. Maybe ill be able to catch up on some of my backlog reads.
@@TomOrange that can be helpful! My anticipated list has grown up to 25 already and yeah, that's going to make it hard to find balance with owned tbr and backlist projects.. hmmm
No Martha Wells? A sequel to The Witch King is coming. She's also working on a new Murderbot but I don't know if the date has been set. A new space opera installment by Elizabeth Bear. Vivian Shaw.…What I want to read are the finale's by Philip Pullman and Tamsyn Muir. Who knows when we'll see either.
@@FormerBipedooh I didn't know the witch king sequel was scheduled for next year, thanks! I'll have to check out the new Elizabeth bear, Ive liked her writing in the past
Nice list. A couple caught my eye, and I've pre-ordered the Outcast Mage. Two questions for you, thought; 1) have you read/reviewed "A Flame in the North" or "The Fall of Waterstone"? I see them on your shelf, and was curious. And 2) Where did you find the gnome? I'm thinking my wife would love one. As always, thanks for your thoughts and ideas. Hope the jolly, fat man brings you lots of interesting and exciting stories this holiday season.
@@RobertSmith-gu7qo I have read and enjoyed both! I don't see many people chatting about them. They really have a mythic feel and you can tell are heavily inspired by lotr but I do enjoy the characters and world building 😁 The gnome came from Kroger, the grocery store!
Interest list, just wrapping up the 4th in the sun eater series, this one took a dark turn, after the mostly positive 3rd book, still very good, thinking the 5th will be more positive, tbd..Merry Christmas to you and your family, pet the crew especially chip!
@@myanaloglife9450 I have the howling dark in my audiobook queue! But since wind and Truth is ahead of it, it might be a while. Merry Christmas!
@ good choice I’m enjoying this series, it’s gotten better as it goes along, yet this 4th book is not a happy experience for the protagonist..still good book, however..
Sorry! My bad. Frank Herbert wrote The Dorsadi Experiment. While the Dorsai books were written by Gordon R Dickson. I always got these titles mixed up. A great book by Gordon R Dickson is 'Naked to the stars'.
Elizabeth Moon 'Vata War Saga' and her 'Serano Legacy' stories. Read them you won't regret it. I also like Frank Herbert's 'The Dorsai Legacy'. (or books he wrote with 'Dorsai' as part of the title).
@@michaelbourrell2693 I have some Elizabeth Moon after on my shelf right now! I'm not sure if they're in that series though (once a hero and rules of engagement)
@@LeeReads The Serano Legacy? I think.
@michaelbourrell2693 that sounds right. I found the audiobook of the first one on Hoopla so I'll slot that into my audio tbr!
@@LeeReads Yeah there was a trilogy set after the original set of five (?) when admiral Serano who plays a cameo role, set on a fleet repair ship/ station. A good read, once again, by Elizabeth Moon.
Hey Lee, I'm a newly published author and I would love to send you a review copy of my book. Let me know if we could possibly arrange that. Cheers.
@@jeffreynelson5944 Congratulations on your new book! I can't guarantee a review but if it's up my alley I will definitely try to take a look! What's the genre/pitch?
@@LeeReads It's called Ninja Punks, @*&% OFF! An analysis of the failed punk rock movement analyzed through a non-dualistic paradigm, telling the story of a kid who sneaks back stage to meet his favorite band, only to find them murdered by, well, a ninja.
@jeffreynelson5944 I'm not quite sure that one exactly jives with my normal reads, but I do wish you lots of success!
honor universe
One of the few books I couldn't finish. The feel of it reminded me of Chuck Palahniuk, who is someone I'll never read again.
@@FormerBiped I've never read them! But I do have to say that I didn't love how wild/rambling JT's stories got!
Chip multiple appearances! Yes! Sounds interesting, not sure I’ll read it, don’t like stuff like that, rational mind says these things are rubbish, my Imagination agrees but than imagines, than I remember many unexplained things in this world..almost all of them with a rational logical explanation, which we haven’t figured out yet..
This is why I don't watch scary movies, because I also spook myself too much with them! (I'll give Chip some pets from you!)
This one sounds like a solid pass. Not a fan of the horror/suspenseful thriller type genres. Having to stop the flow of the story to go read footnotes is too much like work.
That's fair! I agree usually (for ex like with Babel) but I felt compelled to read this one anyway! :p
Your list overlaps my own favorites a lot. Based in that I'll be adding Memory Called Empire to my TBR list. 😁
@@michaeljdauben I hope you enjoy!!
At some point you'll want to try and tackle The Book of the New Sun by Gene Wolfe. Set aside the time to read it twice as you'll miss most of what's going on in the first read.
@@easytargetYT yes! I actually put that on my 24 books to read in 2024 list (which I've done pretty well on) and was trying to decide if I should start it this month or bump it gently to the new year. But I do still want to read it!
I've only read the first book (Shadow of the Torturer) but I'm really looking forward to the rest of the series. It is a very dense and complex book that definitely benefits from a second read, though.
Such a fun and eclectic reading month!
@@Hasan_mahmud50 it was!! Thanks for watching:)
Oh man Archangel sounds really interesting. Ill have to add that one to the tbr
@@TomOrange Yes it's different! I was told, she did angels first 😆 and romance aspects are not explicit thus far.

@@LiteratureScienceAlliance thanks! me too!! I love them so much. I bottle raised these four this summer and it's amazing how it has affected my relationship with them compared to my old lady cats. It's funny how I can filter out the sound of their little collar bells in real life but then I'll listen back to my video and think, they were going wild. Haha
Chip appeared! See I told she loves the camera! Nice list added a few to mine..on third book of the Sun Eater series this one so far is the best one yet first two are very detailed so they slow down at times, but this third one is a roller coaster so far..great recommendation thank you
@@myanaloglife9450 yes she's a cutie. I've started book one of sun eater!! Liking it so far, can definitely see the homage to Dune.
@ oh the Dune influence is huge! Story might be seen as a modern take but it takes a different route, only gripe I have is the world building is detailed at times it feels like the story slows down in the first two books, but it definitely gets going and is worth it..
I finished the third book of the Burning Kingdoms by Tasha Suri: The Lotus Empire. Also re-read Tiamat's Wrath from the Expanse series by James SA Corey
Lotus empire looks interesting..thank you
