I think this is very similar to European officer's sabres, late 19th early 20th, but the blade would probably be heavier, stiffer and maybe thicker.

@@Charles-wu3hw wonderful, thank you. I always thought that the fencing saber he is using there looked less like a saber and more like a cutlass, given its shortness. I just really love the design of the saber he is using, even if it only exists for practice.

Same category but not really the same. Both are curved thrust blades with the difference being that a katana doesn't have counter edge, a conch or guard, and saber is meant for one hand while katana is mostly for two

Or the weapon design is simply inferior, it's what it is. Katana is not designed to fight against European dueling swords

@@jaketheasianguy3307the katana wasn’t designed for dueling in general. It was mostly used as a last resort or for assassinations. The only duels lasted 5 seconds as they would only take one cut to win. But you can use it to fight this guy clearly didn’t know how.

What are you on about the Katana was specifically made to cut armor It was created because the samurai were originally using tachi which was longer and had a less curved edge which is why the katana was made to have a shorter length but a more curved edge for cutting the mongol armor which was made of metal mind you So yea saying a katana is only effective against people with no armor is horribly inaccurate

​@@Fastsnail342 ok you're right that the original commentor was wrong about some things, but sooo wrong about swords cutting armor. indeed samurai armor wasn't just bamboo, it was also made of steel a lot of the time, and not all saberists would be wearing full plate (in fact, most wouldn't). but swords didn't cut steel armor- that can't happen, and did not anywhere in history. samurai used polearms such as naginata and yari, as well as things like bows and even guns, as their main weapons in warfare. these weapons are capable of delivering much more force than a sword due to leverage, speed, etc. in fact, European warfare was also mostly fought with polearms and projectiles. in both cases, the sword was a secondary weapon- think like a pistol in the modern day, where most soldiers would carry a rifle for their main weapon. the sword is the pistol, and the rifle is a spear. you'd definitely rather have one, but the other was better than nothing. katanas grew shorter for a lot of reasons, but one of the most important was simply cultural. the shorter katana were easier to wear around in day to day life (this isn't the only reason. I'm not terribly well-versed in this side of sword history, and I'm not here to speculate)

This is just wrong. Also sabers aren’t the most effective sword against armor no sword was. Also samurai didn’t have bamboo armor. Mostly sword were used against peasants who didn’t have armor not other trained warriors. Bows and guns were more effective anyway.

@BeepBoop2221 a basic block, the glove may have given the dude a hard time or something, he looked like he was going to do it. That or he was just trying to adapt hema longsword technique to a Japanese longsword

As someone who has done kenjutsu, kendo, and HEMA, saber actions are just so much faster than katana actions. It has nothing to do with the gear or clumsiness or any of that. It's true that hanging parries like the ones favored in kinjutsu are difficult to do with gear on, however... At the end of the day, it's always the swordsman and not the sword, but you can't argue that the katana comes with a significant speed and range debuff.

Katate tsuki works, until you miss. Not a fun experience
