YEAR-ROUND CARE: 4 STEPS FOR HEALTHY BEES
1. USE THE CORRECT NESTING MATERIAL: Avoid bamboo or logs with drilled holes, as they can become moldy and cannot be opened. Instead, use stacking trays or cardboard tubes.
2. DO NOT LEAVE BEE HOTELS OUT YEAR-ROUND: Mason bees live only 6-8 weeks. At the end of spring, remove the nesting material from your yard and store it in a cool garage or shed to protect against summ...

    Thank you for this very complete instructional video! I've really enjoyed renting bees from you and also helping the straggler bees emerge from their cocoons (baby bee faces- so cute!). I have only one question- as someone thinking of cleaning at home is it truly necessary to candle the cocoons for non viable bees? Do those non viable bees harbor disease? What if I put out the cocoons (in the spring) after the cleaning/drying/proper storage phase, then at the end of their emergence simply toss the rest of the cocoons? I can understand how removing non viable bees is important for your business of supplying cocoons but am wondering if it's truly important for a home hobbyist?

    • @RentMasonBees
      @RentMasonBees Месяц назад

      Yes. The non-viable bees could contain parasites and viruses that could harm other bees. If flashlight candling takes too long, you can put a flashlight at the bottom or a bucket with paper towel covering the hole and spread more cocoons out. You could make a similar light table like ours, but smaller scale.

    Can the bee's sex be determined at the cocoon stage? For example, my cocoons are mostly in two size groups, large or small, but not much variation in between. Are the small ones male and vice versa? If so, do you sort them by sex to assure customers get a certain M:F ratio? I assume it just random because your cocoon harvest videos show all cocoons being mixed together. Also, do males do any form of pollination or do they only mate and die off? There doesn't seem to be much information available about the roles of male vs female mason bees. Thanks.

    • @RentMasonBees
      @RentMasonBees 2 месяца назад

      Mason bees are early spring pollinators and come out when temperatures are 55+ degrees. They need plenty of early spring blooms and a mud source to make their nesting chambers. They only fly about 300 feet to find everything they need. If they can't find it, they'll fly off further. Are you able to set up a post in a pot with a bee house attached and put on the ground? They may not find your bee house 3 floors up

      Hi Rob. Momma mason bee will lay the girls in the back of the nesting chamber and the males up front. Males emerge first and then the females, who are bigger, will clear the path of mud and empty cocoons to emerge 1-2 weeks later.

    What's the origin of these mites? Hard to deal with the problem if we don't know the origin. You can eliminate the mites within your beehives but the bees can bring the mites right back if the origin source is somewhere else.

    I’ve had bees in my bee house since about April (northeast Ohio). Almost all the holes were filled, and it’s now mid August and almost all the mud walls are broken and empty. Did they leave or did a parasite get them? For reference, we had a minor tornado and heavy rains . However I checked the bees afterwards and they were all still there. 2 weeks later they’re gone?

      It sounds like a bird may have plucked them out or mono wasps got in if it's a tiny hole. Make sure you remove their nesting material at the end of Spring to protect them from summer predators. Mason bees are smart, they'll leave about an inch gap from the outside mud plug to her first nesting cell. You probably still have babies deep inside, but the outside mud plug was disturbed. We have many other videos you can reference for storing over summer and learning proper care. Here is one to prevent birds ruclips.net/video/D3BAPbUh9jo/видео.htmlsi=_mVrASSnh03KeZXE

    Another thing is Mason bees find every hole to lay eggs in each year my pond vacuum was covered in nests they also find holes in nature that don’t get cleaned so it looks like you are killing off the year of offspring doing this. I’ve had my system for twenty years until I moved.

    • @RentMasonBees
      @RentMasonBees 2 месяца назад

      Yes. They will find natural holes in your habitat, and those are hard for predators to find. If you have a mason bee house set out, you're also making it easier for predators, so you need to 1) Put clean nesting material out every spring 2) Remove at the end of spring and don't keep out year round and 3) Open nesting material and clean to remove the predators. The nest generation of bees are not harmed during this process and you're actually helping that next generation emerge safely. I use a dental took to pull out the white tube from the cardboard sleeve so that I can slide a new, clean white tube in.

    I just watched a Leafcutter bee build her nest in the holes of my wood hammock stand. I haven’t seen her for a few days now and the holes look sealed. I live in Texas it’s hot and humid and it’s only June. Will the larvae hatch this summer?

      Oh yes. Here's the fun part about leafcutter bees. When you live in a hot state you can have a 2nd generation of bees. The bees you released will lay eggs in your block and around your yard. If temperatures remain above 70 degrees, those babies will eventually emerge. So you'll have Grand-ba-BEES!!

    Question.. can wasps creat nest same way mason bees do... with the clay cover. I think I have wasps within the one I saved for the fall. This wasps have already come out of the nesting pipes.

      Mono wasps don't build nests, they poke their ovipositor into the cocoon to lay their eggs. Grass wasps will use the same nesting chambers and instead of pollen they gather grasshopper or other bugs body parts to leave for their babies and use the grass to wrap them up. It is VERY important to harvest and clean your nesting material every fall and place clean nesting material out in the spring. If raising your own bees, here is a video on how to clean. ruclips.net/video/9_1WlEDTyhk/видео.htmlsi=bTCqVYvybEdMwbq9
