Sashiko Beginners Workshop Threading the Needle Stephen Rowley
Sashiko threads are often thick and unruly. This can make it difficulty to feed then end through the eye of the sashiko needle.
I think is was about 6 years old when my grandmother taught me this technique. She was a hat maker in Luton. The kind of person who always wore a brooch that had a needle and thread tucked in the back of it. Anyone needed a quick repair, or a button come off, she ready to go.

Sashiko Tip - Joining knot - Hatamusubi.
Просмотров 24 тыс.3 года назад
A traditional knot that is used to join threads for sashiko and boro. It makes a small neat knot close to the fabric. Demonstrated with both single and double thread.

This demonstration was done at workshop speed. To make it easy for everyone to understand, especially if they are following along.

Thanks so much. I always have difficulty following demonstrations. Congratulations, I clearly followed your instructions. Amazing! Just one suggestion. Remind the viewer that the gold thread comes out on the back of fabric at the beginning which means the knot remains on the back of the fabric.

Thank you thank you thank you. I always wondered how to do a nice close knot. It's true you can teach an old dog new tricks, lol, I say that because I'm 66. My knots have always been most noticable and never nice and close to my work This would have really been useful decades ago.

Thanks for sharing this great tip. You are so easy to follow. Going to try this with my redwork stitchery. Makes it look so tidy and neat from the back.

Cutting the ends so close makes me nervous, so l think I'll add a drop of permanent glue (washable glue like Elmer's is temporary and will wash out.) 💖🌵😷🌞

No need for glue. I used to worry about the short tails and would leave them a bit longer, but my confidence has grown. Practice it with Sashiko thread on a piece of material until you get the hang of how to tie it so that it is really tight and close to the fabric. There is a knack. I have pieces of vintage Sashiko with this knot. Clearly tied very tight and very short tails.

I worked in a weaving shed , that knot was called the weavers knot, That was 60years ago I have never forgotten it I crochet a lot so I use it every day, I am watching from Ireland,

It is a very useful knot and found in many different guises. Absolutely essential for weavers. I first learnt it at Boy Scouts. I also use it at sea. In sailor’s terms it is known as a Sheet Bend.
