Working Cocker Spaniel puppy in training.

My Daddy isn’t a professional dog trainer he just loves me and wants me to be a good doggie.
If you see him doing something wrong then that’s fine just let him know and he can teach me better next time.

Here’s one of the reasons that Fern hasn’t been doing any videos recently.....she’s just become a big sister to Cillian ❤️🐶 Here we filmed us introducing the smells of the baby to the dog and rewarding them for being calm around that smell. We’ll increase the exposure and mix environments over the next few days.

Training 2 dogs at once without losing fingers or limbs!
I'm not leaving anything lying around, but my pup is tall. He's taking things off the kitchen counter and running away with them.
What breed are these dogs? So cute
I find most leads are too short for me - im 6 foot 4 and cant do that with a slip lead, any ideas on a longer lead, cant seem to find one
I’ve bought them before off Facebook where people have advertised on gun dog groups that they make their own, so you can pay them a few quid more to make a longer one. Or buy some para cord off eBay and make one? I’ll have a search and see if I can find something
@@FollowFernDogtotally never thought of making my own. I’ll have a look into that mate thanks
Great video thanks for sharing. I'm going to buy a slip lead but I'm not sure what size there seems to be 8mm or 10 mm. What would you recommend? Thank you
I prefer thinner leads. I rarely use a lead, but if I do use a lead then I often just have them on a really thin piece of para-cord. The ones in this video are really thick, but not sure which size. I did buy some thin ones from eBay or Facebook but I think they were made from climbing rope, so had a bit of stretch or bounce to them which I don’t like. Hopefully you can get your dog to a point where they will walk to heel and don’t need to be controlled by a lead and it’s just there for safety, in which case you can just use a thin piece of cord :)
great video, may I ask where you bought your lead?
Nice set of films. About to get our new puppy in 3 days time. When you’re not doing 20 times 2 minutes, where is your puppy, in a crate? Near you away from you? Thanks.

Hi, my 9 month old working cocker has identical problem , very strong/possessive with surrendering dummy to me. He was fine at 5 months, then like a switch he got bull headed about it 🙈. Glad I’ve stumbled upon your vidio, very helpful and will give it a go. 👍.
Brilliant video! Please can you do a video on how to stop a dark excessively barking when they see other dogs? My 5 month old cocker won't stop barking. Also how to socialise them with other dogs
Must also say they chew anything and in the end she now has a plastic bed a mat on floor and toys I get her the Harrington bones with filling I side and this has stopped all other chewing cant have many treats due to weak tummy like all spaniel s
My working cocker will only lick when asked for kisses I don't allow any locking I find strictness is the only way and reward she's an assistant dog medical and has been a joy to train still going most intelligent breed I have trained ❤
Thank you for your really useful information and also about the slip lead
Excellent tutorial. Fern loves her daddy.
I thought I was the only human with working cocker spaniels.
I thought I was the only one with licking problems.
Just stumbled across your video. Just wanted to say, thank you so much for making it! Going to try it from tomorrow, though I am likely going to have persist for quite some time, as my boy is 8 months old now! Let’s hope the behaviour I’ve Permitted hasn’t become Permanent! 😬
If I have had my WCS for 3.5 weeks and he was 7.5 weeks old when I got him and I didn’t employ your methods from day 1, should I be able to get him on track using the techniques in your day 1,2, 3 videos etc? Thank you
Best training videos, don’t understand the ratings here because this is how it should be done. Great connection to the puppy.
Great videos, cheers
Makes sense, I thought sit as first off, but looking at it in this way, it is not so important really, just tricks to show off, and the most important thing is the bond, depending on what you want, a dog to boss around or a good friend.
Makes sense-we get less enthusiastic, so does the dog.
getting our cocker in a few weeks time, and these videos are a big help, so thankyou!!
My dogs do not bring me shoes. They run into the other room and rip them apart.
I've literally got a new pair of shoes last week, I went outside without then this morning I put them in my closet and within 1 hour the dog had already taken out the soles(the shoes were left tied, mind you) , I don't know how she took out the soles so quick or how she even took them out if my closet. I blame those puzzle games I've been buying her, they only make her a smarter menace lol
What cleaning solution do you use?
Love your videos! Could this be used with a show cocker spaniel puppy?
Just wanted to share via this comment how much your videos has helped me, and I haven’t even received my pup yet. This Sunday I’m picking up my beautiful chocolate working cocker spaniel, with a great pedigree and already displays desirable behaviour at only 7 weeks. I have yet found somebody anywhere online that I agree with so much as you. Your style of dog training is completely how I view it and each video makes me so happy because it’s always exactly how I want to do it (except for feeding raw meat, even leftovers too expensive in Amsterdam😉). So thank you - you are helping me cope with my nerves to do it right with the dog. Rewatching your videos helps!
😂 she's waiting because you hold it on to her but what about when you're not holding her that's the reason she's waiting because you holding her she's cute by the way but I need more training for my cocker spaniel I do not want her to be a hyper dog
Can you please make a video to make me think I had boobs also I want to know how it feels to have breast and do they get in the way as much as I think they would if I had big round female breast and nipples can you help me?
Starting to do this - but how do you stop the pup playing tug-of-ward on the end of the lead, with the lead in her mouth. She thi nks its a great game!
Thank you!
Good to see you back. Look forward to seeing more progress of your cocker. My cocker is almost 6 months old. I’m not looking forward to adolescence stage. To be fair he is doing well with training. I am training him not to chase our pet ducks.
Love the videos, they are really good. I'm working my way through them before picking up my new pup in a couple of weeks time. This will be my second working cocker and this time I want to use your ideas get things as right as possible from the start, if I can, including using the cage properly. I cant find a video from you that talks about use of toys during early days and what - if anything - to let them have in the cage?
Hi Sally, we don’t let our dogs have toys unless we give them to them. If we give them a toy we use them to build a bond between us and the dogs through playing, like tug, we don’t just give them a toy and leave them on their own. We don’t want them to learn that they can pick things up and chew them to entertain themselves! We don’t give them anything in their cage either, just a blanket which my wife insists on but I don’t like….they can just chew this too and learn bad habits! Good luck with the pup…exciting!! 🐶
@@FollowFernDog Thanks so much for time taken to reply - since asking that question I have found and listened to your post on toys which made great good sense. Also the post on food - which is thought provoking. Do you let your 2 have a tough chew, like the pieces of tendon, in their cage or is that also not a good idea?
@@FollowFernDog Thanks so much for the time taken to reply. Since that post I have found and absorbed your videos ref toys and ref food - both thought provoking and very useful. Just one quick question arising from that, would you let your pup have a tough chew, such as the deer tendon pieces, in the cage when left in there, if so, leaving it in there all the time or just now and then ..... ?
Anybody want a bet that that pup learns to open the cage soon ?
That happened a long time ago 🤣🤣🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️ she’s a nightmare!! I thought them both how to get in and out of the cage on command….Darly only does it when she’s asked….Fern does it when she pleases!! I put a bolt on ferns inside the door to stop her!
Most gundog training problems arise when the dog is brighter than the owner.
My wcs lies at my feet while I eat my lunch. She knows the pack leader eats first. Equally, she knows the she will eat afterwards. I decide when she eats, not her. The biggest plus I have found with my dog is how quickly she learns. She learned the door routine in 2 days. Now I just have to look at her before going through a door and she sits and waits for the instruction to move.
how old are the dogs?
Brilliant Videos, how long did it take to reach this level response? working at it with our 6 month old Cocker but shes still very excitable.
Hello Sir, is it a good idea to get Fern to respond to a whistle?
Loving following along with these. Quick question if you don't mind, where did you get the furniture crate please
Hi, we got it from the ‘pet carpenter’ on Instagram
Watching loads of your vids. Very useful for our puppy Cocker Spaniel!
Great to have you back mate congrats on the new home. Been slacking myself on the training so it’s the kick up the arse I need.
Let’s do it 🙌🏼🤣
That was interesting :) Are you doing it that way because it is part of the training for field work or are you doing it that way to keep control of the dog's instinct to play all the time? I left toys all around for my puppy, thinking that she always had something to do while I was busy doing other things. I know this breed needs mental as well as physical stimulation so I was happy to leave the toys. I did alternate the toys so that some were away in a bag and brought out as new every few days and then put the others away. However, my method did mean that whenever I sat down she would present me with a toy and expect me to play with it. I would play for about ten minutes and then stop before she got too aggressive with it, but it was never enough for her. She wanted to play all day long and it was very hard to keep her occupied
My cocker is mad about the licking ….😉 8 months old….he’s a lovely boy……I will try your method…..we’ve been strict with him….NO toys..as he’s destroyed them in the past. He is used to no toys now! But….. he’s a chewer if he gets hold of anything in the household. We’ve been trying to trAin him on retrieval …perfect when a young pup…NOT now..he just runs off with the thing..he does come back in the end !! ….It’s easier said than done I’m afraid…..I reckon I should start my own channel on RUclips! 😅
I have a video about getting rid of possessiveness, try that, it might help 😊
This has really made me laugh as my Logan is exactly the same!!! Good luck. I’ll try it too.
Most annoying thing ever 🤣
Great to have you back!
Lovely to have you and the dogs back. I’ll be following along revisiting the basics as my little spaniel Logan is pushing boundaries at the moment as we’ve moved house etc too. I’ve been doing doorway n crate manners and so far so good. Next I’ll sharpen recall to a sit as that’s become recall to run over then run off!!
🤣🤣🤣
Good to see you back!
How long do you get her out the crate for? Just to do this exercise and then straight back? Or toilet, then some recall, then crate? We find our puppy has a lot of energy and isn’t always focused. We try to get him out little but often for short periods ….
At this point it was just really short periods. Always toilet first then a few training drills, then back in. Then repeat and repeat over and over all day!
Not denying your points on not giving toys, but you were wrong about those 3 colours being for us, dogs see on a spectrum of blue, yellow and red, that's why most dog toys are those colours
haha I wish my sprocker wanted me to stroke him that much, he just starts trying to bite my hands when I try cuddle him like that
