      I’ve bought them before off Facebook where people have advertised on gun dog groups that they make their own, so you can pay them a few quid more to make a longer one. Or buy some para cord off eBay and make one? I’ll have a search and see if I can find something

    Great video thanks for sharing. I'm going to buy a slip lead but I'm not sure what size there seems to be 8mm or 10 mm. What would you recommend? Thank you

    • @FollowFernDog
      @FollowFernDog 6 месяцев назад

      I prefer thinner leads. I rarely use a lead, but if I do use a lead then I often just have them on a really thin piece of para-cord. The ones in this video are really thick, but not sure which size. I did buy some thin ones from eBay or Facebook but I think they were made from climbing rope, so had a bit of stretch or bounce to them which I don’t like. Hopefully you can get your dog to a point where they will walk to heel and don’t need to be controlled by a lead and it’s just there for safety, in which case you can just use a thin piece of cord :)

    Just wanted to share via this comment how much your videos has helped me, and I haven’t even received my pup yet. This Sunday I’m picking up my beautiful chocolate working cocker spaniel, with a great pedigree and already displays desirable behaviour at only 7 weeks. I have yet found somebody anywhere online that I agree with so much as you. Your style of dog training is completely how I view it and each video makes me so happy because it’s always exactly how I want to do it (except for feeding raw meat, even leftovers too expensive in Amsterdam😉). So thank you - you are helping me cope with my nerves to do it right with the dog. Rewatching your videos helps!

    Love the videos, they are really good. I'm working my way through them before picking up my new pup in a couple of weeks time. This will be my second working cocker and this time I want to use your ideas get things as right as possible from the start, if I can, including using the cage properly. I cant find a video from you that talks about use of toys during early days and what - if anything - to let them have in the cage?

    • @FollowFernDog
      @FollowFernDog Год назад

      Hi Sally, we don’t let our dogs have toys unless we give them to them. If we give them a toy we use them to build a bond between us and the dogs through playing, like tug, we don’t just give them a toy and leave them on their own. We don’t want them to learn that they can pick things up and chew them to entertain themselves! We don’t give them anything in their cage either, just a blanket which my wife insists on but I don’t like….they can just chew this too and learn bad habits! Good luck with the pup…exciting!! 🐶

    My wcs lies at my feet while I eat my lunch. She knows the pack leader eats first. Equally, she knows the she will eat afterwards. I decide when she eats, not her. The biggest plus I have found with my dog is how quickly she learns. She learned the door routine in 2 days. Now I just have to look at her before going through a door and she sits and waits for the instruction to move.

    That was interesting :) Are you doing it that way because it is part of the training for field work or are you doing it that way to keep control of the dog's instinct to play all the time? I left toys all around for my puppy, thinking that she always had something to do while I was busy doing other things. I know this breed needs mental as well as physical stimulation so I was happy to leave the toys. I did alternate the toys so that some were away in a bag and brought out as new every few days and then put the others away. However, my method did mean that whenever I sat down she would present me with a toy and expect me to play with it. I would play for about ten minutes and then stop before she got too aggressive with it, but it was never enough for her. She wanted to play all day long and it was very hard to keep her occupied
