Welcome to DIY Adventure!
We are Luke and Amanda and we love DIY, from Van and Caravan builds to Home DIY we love to dive in and create things that we think make our lives better.
Follow our latest build - A fully off Grid Caravan made for camping in New Zealand.
Check out our last project where we convert a A 2018 Medium Wheel Base Volkswagen Crafter Van from a cargo van into a camper.
Then go and have a look at our Caravan/RV/Motorhome Bunk Bedding system.
It is such a struggle to make up the bunks in your caravan isn't it? Do you have to climb up to tuck in the top one? Have you got stuck? Even Cramped up?
We have, so we created the Glaamp bedding system. www.glaamp.com

😝 turns out he goaded me into that one!
@@DIYAdventureNZ 😂😂😂
He might need a battery powered soldering iron so he doesn’t have to wait for the electricity. But not sure it will help with operator error.
@@DIYAdventureNZ 😂😂😂 game changer that one 😉
Mint!
Thanks!
Exciting!! 🤗
Can't wait to use it!
Wow, must be so satisfying that every nut, bolt and screw was touched by you guys. Inspiring! Well done from Cape Town, South Africa 🙂
Yes it’s definitely coming to life! And is looking just like we hoped. But didn’t think would actually happen!
Very nice!
Thank you! Cheers!
Love it, nice guys! 🙂
Thanks! 🤩
Another great Video. I can't wait to see the finished van, Looks like you guys work well together but that is a prerequisite for caravan life though !! heheehe😆
I think that’s a pre requisite for staying married too haha 😜
awesome guys - love the humour too :) - great video and info and progress!!!!!! - thanks
Thanks! We try to have our funny undies on sometimes.
Good job 👍
Thanks! It’s a bit slower progress than we would like. But getting there.
Love it...I'm thinking of converting the Jayco.. keep up the great vids
It’s pretty easy to install, the hardest part was the 240v but the sparky got his head around it in the end and had done a great job
Hi! Is there a part 2 video? Did you have any issues with the windows? Thanks
Sorry no part two! Should update the title! No problems with the windows they are going strong
@@DIYAdventureNZ No worries! In the description says "Look out for Part 2 of Cutting Holes, drama ensues!" but I couldn't find it lol. Thank you for your prompt response! Glad to know that they are going strong! Well done!
I have a 30 amp rv that I need more power in for a portable ac. Can I buy the eco flow system and use it while the rv is already plugged in to shore power?
We aren’t sure unfortunately as New Zealand runs lower amperage as we have higher volts. Sounds like a great question for EcoFlow though.
That's an awesome project guys, well done! How much did the chassis go if you don't mind me asking?
Thanks John! Cost about $17k for the chassis and tanks
Hi Luke & Amanda, Paul here from South-Africa, Just want to say, enjoying Your build & vids, good luck as You progress and looking fwd to more cheerful and interesting viewing...
Hi Paul! Thanks for watching and commenting. We really appreciate it!
Hi Interested in your dimensions on your interior cubboards and kitchen area are you able to share some measurements and a detailed vdo of the plumbing and bathroom install?
Maybe a detailed list of products used ?!
What measurements are you after? I’ll get them for you. We are hoping to have a plumbing video up next.
I used raptor as well rolled it rather than spray may have been beter to spray
What was the tare weight of the trailer ?
The spray worked well. But we would roll the underside of the chassis
It’s 800kg
Interested in what bunk bed mattress you used
Got them from Para rubber. They are called a bunk mattress interestingly 750x1900 long
Interesting I am building the same on a steel painted chassis no foam on the floor though I went for 15mm ply and will insulate afterwards
Are you in NZ? Or Aus? We had a Jayco with a ply floor. But it just wasn’t well enough insulated on the floor for us. We looked at trying to insulate under it but couldn’t work out a good way that would work for insulation and also not let water in when driving etc.
Great stuff - awesome video and amazing progress!! - Darren S - PS - our Chassis is now at the galvanisers
Thanks Darren! Oh that great news! We put raptor on our drawbar last week too. It looks epic!
How many liters did you use?
We used 4L to do the whole thing. It was about 3L on the first coat. Then about 1L on the second
What’s this application you guys using.. I wanna do my own diagram to build a 9 meter caravan
Hi! Its called Sketchup. It has been amazing and really the reason the whole build has been possible.
It's hard to argue with the skill level, just excellent work
Thanks so much! It’s our first kitchen, we are pretty happy with it
How much did the shell cost?
All installed on the chassis was about $26kNZD
This is exactly what I have been looking for in layout although for our family we would need to go triple bunks - what is the end ATM target?
Thanks for watching! Shooting for a ATM of 2,500kgs
@@DIYAdventureNZ So good can't wait to see it fully finished! thanks for sharing your journey.
Nice work guys loving the progress
Thanks guys!
Can you please give details on the bed lift?
Yep we will be doing a video on it in the next few weeks
That’s what I love to see, a bit of croc and sock action 👌
Not sure how well they go as safety boots, hot metal got through the holes last week! You must dance when you weld in them!
@@DIYAdventureNZ 😂😂😂😂 looking great anyway guys 👌
👍 looking good guys. How will you stop the doors and draws flying open when travelling?
Good question! We have a little trick up our sleeves. Planning on putting electromagnets on the backs of the draws and doors. Video coming soon.
@@DIYAdventureNZ sounds a plan😊👍
I really like the sleek look of the bunk drawer unit without handles, somewhat like a high end kitchen fitout. The electro magnetic lock system sounds quite interesting. Is it a specific blade on your tracksaw to cut the fibreglass skins?
Thanks, we realy like the look too! I just used a multipurpose blade on the tracksaw, it cuts easily
that looks sick!
Wait till the whole chassis is done. Will look 👌🏼🤩
Great work guys it coming along nicely. Sandy appreciated the sanding jokes. hehehe
Sandy sandy and Amanda with a Sander can swap notes 😝
This is more marriage testing than an ikea flatpack!
Thankfully I love flat packs 🧩. Luke buys them and I put them together 😂
What’s with the new yellow ? I’d like to see more red, lime green and definitely some bluey green
Following TTT very closely for tips! A nice bit of kit for the workshop
@@DIYAdventureNZ 😂😂😂😂💙
I did love that! Looking super smart
Thanks! 🤩
Great Vid, dream caravan in the making.
We hope so ❤️
❤ this layout
Thanks! Hopefully it’s a good one. The shower is the compromise for sure. But might have to put in a roof hatch for Luke 😝
@@DIYAdventureNZ yea hopefully it works well, oh thats an idea
Great work, guys! Looks amazing!
Thanks! We are so happy with the result
Looks awesome guys 👍
Thank you! Cheers!
It's a interesting position NZ has taken with regard to no chains. I've also wondered if the breakaway system would function if a van came off it's hitch but remained connected with it's chains. I suppose it would depend on how long the breakaway cable was compared to the chain length. People always say that you should cross your chains so that they act like a cradle to catch the drawbar should it come off but most people I see have them far too long for that to actually work so it negates the purpose of crossing them. Here in Aus breakaway systems are only required if the GVM of the van is over 2 tons otherwise it's chains only. Can I ask what the predicted weight savings could have been with the aluminium chassis?
The debate will rage on no doubt, like I said in the video ill just follow the rules in what ever country we are towing in and hopefully never have to worry about what happens! The weight saving was going to be about 30% but it was going to cost about 50% more so we went with the conventional steel
Exciting project, looks like you're going the way I'd like to go with having the bed at the back which you raise up when not in use. The shell looks quite strong but light, what did it weigh on delivery and what do you think it will weigh all fitted out?
Thank you! The Shell weighs in at about 480kg so super light. It will be interesting when we weigh it when finished, Im hoping for 2500kg but we can go up to 3500kg
Great video! Laying the floor with tape sounded like applying a screen protector to a phone (on a massive scale) 😄 Looking forward to the next!
Hahaha yep, pretty much!
Nice Work Guys... cant wait for the next vid
Thank you 🙌
Great start guys! Bunnings service was shocking! Especially for something so large and awkward!
It sooo was. I cut out most of my rant but they actually took about 45 mins to roll up the vinyl. And they cut 10m instead of 6m. Then closed the trade entry and made me reverse in. It was crazy. 😂
@@DIYAdventureNZ 😲 I'd be sending a complaint to head office! How rude!
Woop woop!! 🎉
Glaampavan! Very cool 🤙
Haha I like the name!
You need to come to the DO-35 dark side 😉
We want to for sure.
No chains is just stupid. Not from the van running off if there is a problem (brake controller) but from the damage they can occur to the van/draw bar if it hits the pavements. This is why you cross the chains btw.
Yep. We get the theory both ways. But it’s the law here in NZ and the chains get taken off by the people who check for vehicle fitness if they are on.
I'm just curious, are your caravan interior designs/specs relevant for whoever makes the chassis? Or does only the box matter from their perspective and the expected overall weight? I'm no physics person but it seems the weight distribution plays a role there
Great question! The chassis design is very generic with where the wheels and drawbar is situated so there are some loose design rules to follow when it comes to weight distribution. The heavy stuff needs to be down low and over the wheels and lighter stuff up higher. Our upcoming electrical and plumbing episodes will cover this in more detail
Great video again guys … when do ya recon you will be finished this rather big project??
That’s the million dollar question! Luke said the Van conversion we did would take 12 weeks. It took 18 months!! So maybe if we say 18 months, it might be 12 weeks??? 😝
awesome video - looking forward to the next video - so I make fewer mistakes with my build too maybe! :)
Happy to help 😝 our van build we made so many mistakes. But we did learn from them. The first one is making sure we have a good plan to start from. Sketchup has changed our lives.
