Your plant looks to me like an aloe! They are succulents, so desert plants, and like a lot of sun and only a little tiny bit of water. Succulents store water in their leaves, thus the Thiccness, so you dont want to water them but once in a blue moon (some species also take to misting). Give your new friend as much light as you possibly can provide, give it way less water than you think it needs, and you'll be golden!

(Also, I don't have a goodreads account bc it's owned by amazon and honestly fck amazon hahaha, that's my opinion though. I do have a storygraph account. I didn't know about fable? interesting)

I recommend trying Storygraph over goodreads as a reading tracker: it's not owned by amazon, is volunteer run and has a tonne of interesting graphs and charts you can look at! Also, small world, I'm based in England and looks like you did your study abroad at the uni I went to :) Blackwells is a magical place.

Drop Goodreads. Storygraph is better. It learns your taste and actually gives you good recs, and you can search books by their mood (funny, emotional, adventurous, etc.) and gives you extensive reading stats. Pls try it! :D Congrats on joining the bookish community!

tips for fixing bunched up thread: check your tension (top and bottom), clean your machine, oil your machine, change your needle, check if the bobbin is in correctly and the thread isn't caught in it, when you start sewing make sure both threads are a good ways away from your stitching site so they dont get pulled in, and don't start sewing too quickly, that can mess it up as well
