    I had issue with the cdi not lighting up. Thought it was bad and bench tested it ,to find it worked fine. Had bad power to pink wire. Now runs from its own relay but powers relay from ignition and Works fine now but had some RMF and put on some ferrite beads on cables none now…

    I installed Sniper EFI, CDI Box, Distributor, Electric Fuel pump in tank and after 1 year I uninstalled it all. Had to send EFI Throttle Body back to Holley for replacement, then the Hyper Spark CDI box failed and that was it. I converted back to Carb and my car once again runs perfect. The entire Holley Sniper/ Hyper spark system is crap in my opinion and all hype being pushed onto car guys.

    This is definitely a crap product . It does great as long as it’s simple . The moment I went for timing control , the unit failed . Cost me a complete 427 . Fuel flooded the motor and continued to pump fuel after the engine stopped . Engine slugged and rods went and I need a new motor . I hate this system have had for 2 yr it’s junk. On the RFI usually the pink wire . Here is a fix ,pink wire direct to battery . Then install a 4 pin relay from a key hot source to energize the pink wire . This is a effective and simple way to “clean” the pink wire I basically have the same issue as you indicated, pink wire with relay fixed me . Now I’m try to re install this unit on new motor and I can’t get the distributor to light up It’s always something . Personally I’m ready to go back to carburetor .

    I've had Sniper on my Camaro for a few years now. I attempted to install Hyperspark last year, and ran into the same basic issues as you. I went back to HEI, and just decided to try it again this past week. It ran great for 1 day, and then started all the same garbage. The main fuse came disconnected for no reason and caused the car to completely shut off. I reconnected it, and it "runs" in the driveway. When I take it down the road it feels like a spark plug is not connected, but they all are. I'm regretting this install all over again...

      Yes and no. I had not done anything further in terms of idle tuning other than preventing it from learning bad values. The cam was Radical and this was somewhat of a Band-Aid fix. If your intention is to be fuel injected I would look for something with less overlap. Or slightly wider LSA 110-112? It may not sound is good at idle but there are more fuel injection friendly grinds. I recently ended up going with different custom grind, on paper it looks similar and radical but is considerably more docile at idle while making very strong power.

    I have a pretty stout cam I’m putting in a 496, if you can do it all over again, would you just run carbureted? Or do you think the EFI has finally buffed out and is a superior fuel system when you’re running a big cam? Based on drivability not necessarily horsepower numbers.

    • @cheverra6886
      @cheverra6886 3 года назад

      I had a fairly well AFR tuned Holley, 800 that didn't run nearly as well as the sniper does once I worked out the bugs. I would probably opt for the stealth sniper (wasn't even available when I bought mine). Or research whichever model has the least amount of RFI issues. The atomic has ECU mounted outside of the throttle body (so less rfi). I think the atomic software is pretty primitive though. I'll could never get a carburetor to cruise lean enough to be economical and still have enough jet for wot, even with playing with enlarged idle bleeds and big power valve. Fuel injection mid-range is superior.

  • @BronzePancakes

    Thanks for confirming someone else is seeing that weird idle adjustment. I've got a 355 SBC, with a comp cams thumpr cam in it. 109 LSA and some pretty long overlap durations, and my fuel table looks very similar. My learn table was trying to drop my base fuel map into the negatives at idle.

  • @normbainbridge9981
    @normbainbridge9981 4 года назад

    I had exactly the same issue on new instal of both the Sniper and Hyperspark distributor. I didn't use the ignition box due to poor reviews online but went with the supplied coil driver unit. The car would run fine for a bit then suddenly backfire and die. Noticed on the handheld that the O2 sensor was showing heating when the failure happened. Called Holley tech support and we talked through my setup. Turns out that I had the coil driver too close to the ECU. RF interference was causing the ECU to reboot on the fly. Moved the coil driver to the drivers side fender well and the system has worked flawlessly since. You mentioned that it ran fine without the air cleaner on. Your air cleaner could be transmitting the RF from your coil to the ECU. Have you tried moving the coil further away. I agree Holley should have shielded the ECU much better!

    • @cheverra6886
      @cheverra6886 4 года назад

      Yes, I relocated the coil all the way to the passenger side fender when troubleshooting the hyperspark. No change. The old setup has the coil and CDI box in fairly close proximity to the air cleaner and throttle body. It runs well as long as I don't lower the height of the throttle body i e lower carb spacer. In my case the RFI Source was the spark plug wires and the mail HEI terminals made it worse. My air cleaner also has a huge drop which probably acts as an antenna for RFI to the ECU. I got to the point where I wasn't going to modify everything just to have timing control.

      Yes, everything is wired directly to the battery and grounded. Battery is grounded directly to engine block. Not the cause of my RFI. It was run both ways, made no difference. It is throttle body proximity to the distributor. If I lower carb spacer by 1/4 of an inch it freaks out. If I raise the spark plug wires by using mail HEI terminals, it freaks out. It will idle smoother with timing control, even with a nasty cam. You also theoretically can come up with the perfect timing curve for your engine via manipulating the table. There are definitely a lot of Pros. However, one Con in my case: I would hate to experience an ECU reset while it was in control of the timing and it throw 50 degrees at it mistakenly under load.

      Rat Fink I think I’ll keep my stock ignition with the sniper. It is a stock engine should not have any problems

    Hi when you say the ECU is not properly shielded, are you talking about the Hyperspark Ignition Box, or the ECU in the EFI throttle body itself?

      Throttle body (TB), mine will pick up RFI if I lower the TB (shorter carb spacer) or raise the plug wires ( male hei terminals). Hyperspark is not the problem, the ECU shielding or proximity to Rfi from plug wires and or terminals is.

    Data log? What parameter was affected by interference?

      The ECU was restarting /resetting repeatedly,; battery, TPS, and even the coolant sensor had noise. It's not the hyperspark per se that causes the issue, it's the proximity of the plug wires and or terminals. If I lower the throttle body or raise the plug wire terminals I have major problems.
