    What would be the height of those route numbers, I wonder? I know Transign had two widths, condensed and extra condensed. I know they were limited to these "batwing" rollsigns. As well as the height of the other type fonts, I wonder (8" tops?). And I agree, this business of cutting up signs of such historical nature constitutes both desecration and sacrilege.

    • @RollsignGallery
      @RollsignGallery 2 месяца назад

      @wmbrown6 - I'll do a follow up comment on the more specific sizes of each font type later, when I have access to my files. In the meantime, I recreated the sign for my website, ROLLSIGN GALLERY. All the info on it, and the other NYC rollsigns in my collection can be seen here: www.rollsigngallery.com/053-NewYork/NewYorkCity/page053-NewYorkCity.html

      @@RollsignGallery - I saw. I salute your efforts.

    • @RollsignGallery
      @RollsignGallery 2 месяца назад

      @wmbrown6 - So I checked my files. The tallest characters on there are 13.5 inches tall. The bi-level text is 6 inches tall, and the "TO" on each is 3 inches tall. Transign had several text widths for its characters. The 6 inch text for instance had four different widths, where smaller ones like 5 and 4.5 inch text had five different widths. They had stenciled characters for their signs as small as one inch. You have to remember also, before about the middle of 1985, all the text on their rollsigns was screened using fixed size stenciled letters, numbers, and characters on blocks. After mid-1985, they switched to computer generated texts.

    • @wmbrown6
      @wmbrown6 2 месяца назад

      @@RollsignGallery - I certainly salute those at Transign who, starting in 1959, figured out how to size each width in the way they did. I do have to say, those "block stencilled" fonts - which I have noted they themselves called "Transign Standard" - had more character to them (or "TO" them) than the computer-generated type they switched to after '85. The pre-'85 type was their identifying mark; that got lost after the switch. And yeah, I figured the "extended" width only went up to the 5" size. It makes sense.

    • @RollsignGallery
      @RollsignGallery 2 месяца назад

      @wmbrown6 - The extended one you're referring to was only with the 4.5 and 5 inch letters. No other sizes had them. The most unique thing to come out of Transign was the Translator. www.rollsigngallery.com/TransignTranslator/Translator.html A video I did on it can be seen here: ruclips.net/video/pV9CExv_yWQ/видео.htmlsi=RjqxKdgqtAnQN6oz Since this video, I've acquired a full, three scroll sign unit. I plan to bring it with me to Transign to hopefully get some insight on how to get it working. The president of Transign is a fan of my work and website, and has invited me up there to visit.

  • @wmbrown6
    @wmbrown6 2 месяца назад

    Of the all-capital letter rollsigns, Transign's has to be my favorite. I detected the following sizes of type used: 1" (Venus Bold only) 1.5" 2" 2.5" 3" 4" 4.5" 5" 5.5" 6" 8" (anything missed?) plus the following type widths: Extended Regular Condensed Extra Condensed Ultra Condensed (in 4" size, an Extra Ultra Condensed whose type shapes are different from the Ultra Condensed) This set of fonts was designated Transign Standard by them. A shame there's been no attempt to replicate all this digitally (whether commercially available or not). What size would this type be, I wonder?

    • @RollsignGallery
      @RollsignGallery 2 месяца назад

      @wmbrown6 @wmbrown6 - Their text height do go higher. On all the signs I own the largest was used on the side rollsigns for the "batwing" ad frames. Those had characters as tall as 13.5 inches. So far I've recorded text in large sizes of 6", 7", 9", 10.5", and 13.5". Not all text heights had all five widths. 6 inch text only had four that I've seen. Larger ones have had even less, some, only one that I've come across. Same with those 4 inches or smaller. The smaller they get, the number of width options decreases. You have to remember, all of their signs created before the middle of 1985, used fixed size stenciled characters on blocks. There was no "font" like the way it is today. After mid-1985 is when they switched to computer generated design. With 1 inch letters, there are two different block style texts, but only slight differences. These were mainly.used on dash mounted signs. Then there's the more rounded wider lettering, but those were crossovers from their Helvetica characters, not part of the blocky "Standard" family. They were just used more often on side signs because at 1 inch tall, they were easier to read. As for replicating them digitally... who says no one hasn't? 😉 I own about 650 rollsigns total, many of which were older Transign. Since the lettering was fixed stencilled, it only made sense to create a template file of every letter, number and character I came across of every size and width, to make future drawings easier to do. (No, they are not publicly available. Trade secret. Sorry.)

    • @wmbrown6
      @wmbrown6 2 месяца назад

      @@RollsignGallery - On those old Transign signs, I've counted the following sizes (sorry if I'm duplicating): 1" (only Venus Bold Extended), 1.5", 2", 2.5", 3", 4", 4.5", 5", 5.5", 6", 8, 12.75" and 13.5" (as you pointed out; the latter two of a different font type than the other sizes). Never from what I could tell have I seen type heights of 7" or 9" or 10.5" - unless I'm misreading the measurements of some of 'em. I've been able to figure out how they were laid out (and the lines of type spaced) by such formulae. Their old type may have been "stencilled," but I certainly prefer their shapes to those of Hunter Illuminated Sign, Teleweld, Trans-Lite, etc. On a forum called BusTalk, there are pictures of a late 1966 "batwing" roll sign created by them for MaBSTOA (Manhattan and Bronx Surface Transit Operating Authority) of Manhattan bus routes as constituted at the time. By my calculations, each "exposure" was spaced 16" apart. On the one you've got, can you say for certain that spacing between "exposures" is what it is?

    • @RollsignGallery
      @RollsignGallery 2 месяца назад

      @wmbrown6 - Like I said, I physically own the signs with all the sizes and variations I've mentioned. So that's my source for what I said. Unless otherwise stated, all the images on Rollsign Gallery are recreations of the actual rollsigns I own personally.

    I sell some plates on eBay every so often. Does the envelope come from free shipping supplies? I’m still trying to figure it out so I don’t have to find stuff here. Do you pay anything for those? Can you put an eBay shipping label on those?

    • @RollsignGallery
      @RollsignGallery 10 месяцев назад

      The USPS padded envelopes come from USPS for free, and you can order a bulk number of the envelopes to be shipped to your address through the USPS website, and some (mostly larger cities) post offices carry them to be requested for in person, but to pack and ship the plates themselves still cost whatever Priority shipping is for that. You can put an eBay label on them too as long as that eBay label shipping is set to the Priority Padded Flat Rate Envelope on your listing. The cardboard just comes from local stores, from the bulk groceries or merchandise they receive. I hope I answered your questions. If you still not sure, comment again and I'll try to clarify.

      All I can suggest is to watch it as often as needed to read it all. It's running at 24 volts, the same as if it was on a bus. I've experimented with it at 12 volts, but it struggles too much to roll the heavy linen rollsigns, even to the point that the motor stalls. That can burn out the motor.

    • @RollsignGallery
      @RollsignGallery 11 месяцев назад

      Except for a very few, the rollsigns shown on my website are all ones have personally collected over the past 30 years. If I don't have them in my physical possession, it's virtually impossible to do accurate recreations of what they look like. Purchasing them from places like eBay is nearly impossible now as sellers have extremely and very unrealistically over inflated the prices for them, sometines by over a factor of 10. I do consider deals with realistic prices, and I always accept donations of signs. With me they would be kept safe in their original condition, and most definitely would never get cut up like some online sellers do.

      No need to be sad. Sure the mixed traffic on street will be a thing of the past, but the trains will still run through town on those streets, just grade separated from the road.

    I was around on last day of street running in downtown South Bend. I think that it may have been in 1970. I always enjoyed going thru downtown M.C. on my trip from S.B. to Randolph St. Station. Those old orange cars were awesome! My first ride in was back in '54.

    I only recently discovered that SSL exists as a great way to head towards visiting my folks while avoiding the traffic disaster that is I-94 and wanted to experience this once, but it seems I'm too late. I can understand the reasoning though. Despite tradition, having a separate level grade and a second set of trackage is not only safer but allows for more trains. It's like the bridge that used to be by Hinsdale Hospital, despite being one of the last single-lane bridges in the country in regular service, it's right near a large active hospital, and the needs for emergency vehicles to easily and safely get to the hospital did outweigh tradition, sad as it may be.

      I remember the stretch limos scraping in the middle when going over the old bridge.

    Where can I buy these buses? My son just saw your video and is obsessed by ttc. Driving me crazy..... 😉

      It was a limited run, so unfortunately they no longer have the NewFlyer XE40. I just checked eBay.ca and there's none on there either. I have a video in the works reviewing a Proterra TTC model though. If you subscribe and hit the bell you'll be notified when it uploads. I'll provide a link in its description when I upload it.

    I heard Mexico purchased a lot of their former bases and they ran them to the ground that's how well they ran yeah NYC definitely made a mistake ending their contract with Grumman they also suffered a huge lost due to their lost suits with Grumman having to pay high maintenance cost on RTS

      Once complete they will still run down 11th and 10th street, but on their own grade separated right of way, not right in the road pavement.

      @@markvogel5872 - From what I understand, they're twinning the track too with the upgrade, so they'll be able to run more frequent service without the need to worry about opposing trains through Michigan City.

    14:19 - do you know if this cutaway was an early Girardin/Blue Bird? I think there was one similar to it in one of the NY yards I picked.

    • @RollsignGallery
      @RollsignGallery 2 года назад

      It may have been a Blue Bird? With only about one hour to work with at that time, after I saw it didn't have a destination sign I moved on to the rest of the yard.

    Where is this junk yard with all the GM oldlooks? I am restoring a GM TD4506-001. That’s right the very first one and it is also the very first transit bus to get the GM name plate after the war WW2 that is. We are in need of a front axle and this video shows early model oldlooks single window style that we need and could possibly get more parts off of. Your help would be greatly appreciated.
