Thanks for an illustrative video. I respectfully think this is way more complicated that necessary. Just attach the a spare halyard to the Lifesling line (once secured to the MOB) and hoist. This adds extra purchase and is much faster to complete. With no sails up the boat will be an extra hazard. I would heave to and use motor for fine tuning. Heaving to will protect the MOB from wind and waves and make a more stable working environment for the remaining crew. The added heel will also assist in recovering the MOB. Practising this while clipped in and wearing a PFD would also be a more realistic simulation once the procedure is taught and understood. Thnaks again for the video. NOTE: If Lifesling line is too long, just shorten with a cleat hitch on the aft cleat.

Thanks Margaret, we have been teaching the heave to method on our 35 ft Seawind as the go to mob method. The fastest record recovery has been 40 seconds. I’ve also been teaching it on our monohulls at fairwind Yc with the same successful results. 2 things. First, like the figure 8, it work best when you are beam reach or higher. If lower ,start your engines to climb back up. Second, on a monohull, go 1 to 1.5 boat lengths before the heave to and you can sail back to the mob at 1 to 2 knots without engine. If you heave to immediately when an mob is called and on a close haul you could be too high to drift onto the mob. Then you have to tack or gybe again. Art Toye

The Douglas hitch I think is much better for tying to a bull rail for several reasons. First, if you have long lines you, don’t have to pass the whole length of the line around the bowl rail, which is a pain when you’re trying to disembark particularly if you have a strong current or wind. It’s very quick and simple. Check it out.

We used basically the same knot only over top instead of under and we just pulled a loop through twice rather than the whole rope

One crew, usually the one who sees the MOB first should always keep looking and pointing at the MOB as you can very easily lose sight of the MOB even in a small swell. You can also heave-to with just the mainsail and rudder in opposite direction in a catamaran. André in Sydney

Thanks for the video. Great instructions. My wife and are scheduled to do a week sailing corse on a Catamaran in the sea of Cortez this December. I’m reading my study book and trying to understand Heaving-To. I learn much better watching videos and doing things hands on. I’m not to the part in the book about Man over board yet. I’m curious to see if ASA uses this technique. If you can keep your Witt’s and your headed into the wind, it seems like a quick maneuver to slow the boat and maintain controle then back away from the wind to the victim. I have had some self taught experience with a 16’ Hobbi Cat years ago. I wish I had read more about sailing. There is so much more to it than the I ever expected. I did experience that going into the wind a close haul (I didn’t know it was called that at the time) gets you the max speed! Flying a hull was the most exhilarating feeling of all!!! Thanks

Nicely done...but I'm not sure why your not using the cleats on the dock?

apparently, she is reversing against spring line. At the same time, reversing means that prop walk is forcing stern away from dock. Nicely done!

I was surprised you suggested putting the sails away. Why not heavy to? This is quick and will stabilize the boat. Once the MOB is secured in the sling I'd heavy to and start retrieving the line. Any thoughts?
