Auld Blokes Larking About

Auld blokes larking about is a bunch of auld blokes larking about. Auld enough to know better, but young enough to misbehave. A group of aulder mountain bikers who aren't skilled enough or fit enough, but love what we do. We don't take ourselves too seriously, so there's no need for you to............

Early morning ride over Dent, taking in a lovely sunrise along the way. First venture out after suffering the dreaded Covid, excuse the spluttering, it was tough going. Short video of a short ride.

Assumption is the mother of all cock-ups. Gavin asked who was going on this ride, knowing he'd struggle against e-bikes on this one, he was pleased to hear it was just James and myself. James having a conventional bike as well would mean Gavin wouldn't be left behind. However James' bike was in for repair, so I loaned him one of my e-bikes for the day. The abuse we got from Gavin when he arrive...
VSCC Lakeland Trial 2021 - Wythop Woods

Happened across these guys in Wythop Woods. Absolutely brilliant to see these old cars being used as they would have been on Lake District tracks over 80 years ago. The Bentley is almost 100 years old for example, fantastic to see out in the woods. Imagine telling the men building these cars that one day someone would film and photograph them with a telephone that they had in their pocket.......

A potter about around Dent on a cold December day. This was never supposed to be made into a video. I was checking out a new mount and some different settings on the camera (still can't work it properly) while catching up with a friend of auld. As it turned out, it was fortunate that we did record parts of this ride, because there hasn't been another one since. And furthermore, harvesting and a...

I like the section of stills at the end, somewhat poignant.
That lady with the pink beret is a major distraction! 🤣 She keeps cheering on the drivers and taking their concentration away from the track, and when someone gets stuck sge hurtles over to pretend to be helping to give them a push, but then she just stands there and cheers some more! 🤣 She's hilarious! 🤣
With that intro, I thought I was about to be watching some lost episode of a British detective series from the 1970s! 😁
Dad and Lad, nowt like it. One minute you are teaching them how to ride and in no time you are watching them vanish down the trail in front of you. How it should be.
I will love to have a E bike, nice riding video mate.
Nice to hear from you again my friend. Hope all is well with the Gurkhas.
Great driving and spirit with wonderful cars .
Simply amazing! Bob is a proper guy who's seen it all.
The scenery looks amazing. Makes me want to get out their for the weekend and escape London!!!
Great video. I was looking for a less terrifying way up yewbarrow. Yours is the first on up that middle route. Dunno why someone would give this thumbs down 😐
Thanks, hope it helped you out. As for the thumbs down, there's a guy who is also an e-biker, who also puts his videos on YT, but doesn't think we should ride where we ride. So he gives a thumbs down and negative comment. We live here, our families have done so for generations. And while that gives us no exemption from rules, as a parochial lot we struggle with being lectured by outsiders who visit once every few years.
Nice video mate.. Great channel, nowt like finding a good channel during lockdown.. Subscribed..
Thanks very much. You have a fine collection yourself. Shout up if you're ever up this way.
That is a very good trail, nice video man. Keep shredding 💪
Great to hear from you again, thanks. I keep saying it, but it's time you were back hunting up this way. Been a while since the Scafell run. And bring the Gurkhas.
trail looks great!
Shred 🤙🏻🤙🏻
It's funny how dogs just take right to the paddleboards. Amazing scenery to paddle such quiet water. Very cool.
Wow what a coincidence. We were just laughing about Buddy performing the puke on the furniture in front of the camera when that message came through. Spooky! Take care friend.
Hi I’ve subscribed to your channel for a few reasons. 1. you are an old bloke 😀 2. You have an electric mtb. 3. I can feel I’ve been on a ride without leaving my chair. Seriously though I’m 60 and at the moment use a non emtb. Is there a big difference going up hill with a emtb as I’ve never ridden one. I’m thinking of getting one but the price is putting me off. Keep the videos coming. 👍
Hello mate, thanks for stopping by. We live on the western edge of the Lake District National Park, as you may have gathered, it's very hilly terrain around here. The emtb is worth it's weight in gold. There's two ways to ride them. Stick to non emtb speeds and use the motor to make it near effortless, or graft as you would on a conventional mountain bike, but carrying two to three times the speed. No longer will you have to find a downhill section to create some excitement, flat and even uphill can provide entertainment on these things. Obviously the more power you dial in, the less range you will have from the battery. I didn't get started mountain biking until I was 51. A 2016 Giant Reign 2 sat unused for two years after just one ride. I ordered the Haibike as soon as the 2019 models were released; it had 1000 miles on it inside twelve months, that's the difference. If you intend to do what we are doing, then an e-bike isn't just a benefit at 60, it's pretty much essential. There's over twenty of us in the Auld Blokes Larking About group, and in the space of two years, all but three I think have converted to emtb after seeing how they perform. As Deano says, it's not cheating, it's enabling!
Had a ride up to Crag Fell the other week and loved the place. There looked so many options for great routes 🤙
It's a nice ride out whichever way you go. I don't think one particular route is better than another really, they're just different. Haven't had a go at the (ex)wooded decent since it's been cleared though. Looked at it from the bottom last week. It's totally changed. At my age I'll not get to ride it again with mature trees. Sad, but the begginings of something new I suppose. See you up there one day 👍🏻
I do not suppose you strava that did you would like to do that route - as I went the other side around Burnmoor Tarn but that looks epic
I don't Strava anything mate, sorry. Route is basically just a loop from the car park at the foot of Yewbarrow, up one side of Over Beck towards Dore Head, then back down Over Beck on the other side back to the car park. Clearly marked on most maps. The ascent onto Yewbarrow itself is of debatable benefit. It's a lot of graft for not a lot of riding to be honest.
@@auldblokeslarkingabout3743 Many thanks, hmm after that review on the route I might put it on the back burner for a Someday ride then and look for some other routes - thanks again !
@@psvialli wise man lol. It was about the challenge of getting a bike on top of Yewbarrow really. Pleased I did it, but won't be going back.
@@auldblokeslarkingabout3743 Yep great effort for sure getting to the top of that ! lots of good routes around but always gutted when the decent it just mehhh after a slog up - A good ride is top of Blake Fell and you get a good decent down to Loweswater if you have not done that one ( which I am sure you prob have but just in case )
@@psvialli Blake has a lot of options. Tend to go at it from Kelton Fell off the Leaps, although in dryer weather, coming up from Ennerdale Water to Floutern Tarn then over Gavel Fell makes a nice change. Option then of going onto Blake top or turn right down through High Nook. We're lucky to live where we do. Hope to see you on the trail.
Awesome ride out marra 👌
Cheers
I just realized I didn't have my notifications in for your channel. I've got some catching up to do. You always ride at such indpiring and vast landscapes. It's okay that the Sun stayed hidden, it was still awe inspiring and quite relaxing to watch and listen. Really nice job editing btw. You guys look to always be having a light hearted time.👍
Kind words, thank you. This is our backyard. There's more dramatic parts of the Lake District but out of "cycle to" range. And yes it's always light hearted. We're no mountain bike stars, just having fun in a natural environment. Have a look at Paul Tierney: Running The Wainwrights to give you an idea of where we live from a runners perspective. ruclips.net/video/laMBEjxlst8/видео.html It's taken me over a year to collect 32 Wainwrights on the bike. This amazing guy did 214 in six days. Total respect.
Loved it!
Cheers. I see you're an e-biker too! You must be wanting the extra speed at your age, we're wanting the extra help lol.
This is awesome - what is the legality of riding around there?
Thanks for the comment, glad you enjoyed it. We don't give legal advice though I'm afraid.
@@auldblokeslarkingabout3743 haha OK ill read between the lines there. We regularly visit the ennerdale area for walking and have had a few days on the bikes over at whinlatter but would like to get out onto the fells. I guess you guys are fairly local to the western fells
Yes this is our back yard. Born and bred here for generations. You'll be fine as long as you adopt the same basic countryside principals that you would while walking. 90% of walkers are fine when you meet them. Odd ones are intolerant. Treat them with respect and don't rise to their bigotry. Not had any problems with farmers yet. Any we've encountered have been great with us. Shout up if you need a guide when you're over this way.
@@auldblokeslarkingabout3743 I was kind of thinking that - we often see tracks that aren't made by boots or sheep. My in laws have a place in Cleator Moor so it's nice and easy to head up for weekends. Looking forwards to visiting again when this is all over!
No problem, see you when the fog lifts.
I love that I just felt like I was taken for a full adventure ride. Digging the longer episode format you do. Gives the viewer a chance to settle in and enjoy for while. Nice job man.
Thanks, really appreciate it. The longer format just kinda happens on it's own. I actually tried to squeeze this one down to half the size but I just can't manage it 🤣. I like the way you can tell so much story in your videos in much less time. That said, it was an eight hour ride. Happy 38th Birthday ride by the way 🤘
That is a epic trail. Good video mate.
Cheers friend. Some more ideas for when you come back this way again hunting. 👍🏻
Great video, love the views, which would you advise the best route up and down Crag Fell
Thanks, appreciate it. I would say it's personal choice and what suits your method of travel. The classic Crag Fell mtb experience has to be ascending via Heckbarley from Cold Fell road, then descending to Crag Farm House as in the video.
@@auldblokeslarkingabout3743 cheers for the advice. The way you say will be grand. Have you ever attacked it from the other side from the lake shore ?
@@splotter66 No, but I did try to ride down onto the next level from the top once. ONCE! We've only taken the bikes along the lakeside path crag side once as well. From the weir to Angler's Crag is a good ride. Challenging in places but rideable right through. Got to carry them over Angler's Crag. Path varies from there between hard work and WTF am I doing here when there's a road on the other side. I enjoy the challenge of natural terrain but there's a limit.
Cool video! Keep up the good work
Thanks! You too!
Nice video. Outstanding view , love to come up there to ride and explore.
Thanks. It's a shame you didn't get good weather when you were up here for your Scafell Pike ride. A clear day makes all the difference.
