The IPS pods is a nightmare to service and every 200 hors of operation, out the water and spares arent always available. It creates the understanding why PERSHING boats abandoned the VOLVO IPS drives, for surface drives. The PERSHING boats run faster and has an about proportional consumption to performance curve. Everybody that has a boat with Volvo IPS drives does a service at least once then flips the boat for something else.
Thank you for your insights! I've always been impressed with surface drives, but wondered why they aren't used more widely?
Was the boat going to be on display inside of a building? Fire Marshalls at these events will not allow a boat to have much fuel on board.
Informative, thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
This was the only Axopar 45 “Brabus Shadow 1200 XC” in existence. That very boat was at Dusseldorf and I heard comments that it was very staticky, shocked anyone that got on it.
Ya what's the replacement cost of that windshield
While replacing USCG approved fuel hose and the fuel level sensor in the gas tanks I purposely left the cell phone far away from the bilge during this project. In addition both engine room fans were on during this project. You can never be to cautious while working around gasoline. May the lost souls rest in peace.
Merci.
There are a few hundred thousand I have regretted spending on a boat, then spent more on the same boat.😂🤦♂️🤷
That's right kids, don't go installing pond systems on your boat, definitely don't get me started on bod systems!
Do FLIR system will be good for offshore sailing?
I love how he says he does not have the facts and then another point he goes on to say the fact that I understand them and then another point he goes on to say in my opinion. The guy was not there. He did not witness this. He did not speak to people on the ground or witnesses. He’s literally speculating and talking out of his arse.
That baby will bounce at 25 mph.
Not interested in pods‼️
I LOVE surface drives, they'er my favorite and goto for getting out of situations and bad weather. I love outboards also like the V12's of Mercury.
Thanks! just what I need. Looking to upgrade my 21' trd pro bulbs to LED. It looks so outdated currently
Good information! I would also add that if there were any propane systems installed on the boat, that could also be a suspect. Propane is heavier than air, and if there is a leak it will just pool in the bottom of the hull waiting for an ignition source. I am a bit puzzled at the battery packs that were being hosed down. Those batterie should have been using Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) chemistry, and one of the main benefits of that chemistry is that it does not self-oxidize and combust like other lithium battery chemistries that you referred to.. Possibly the first responders were just exercising caution by dousing the pack with water 'just in case' they may have contained a more flammable lithium battery type? If they really were the more dangerous type of lithium battery, then that was a very dangerous choice.
All batteries contain combustible materials
@@AlbertHess-xy7ky Sure -= the plastic housings, etc.. aka the stuff that the entire boat is made of. My comment was referring to the fact that the responders were treating the batteries onboard as if they were Lithium Ion NMC, not Lithium Iron Phosphate. Again, that was probably a prudent just-in-case measure, since they probably could not get close enough to identify the makeup of the batteries.
The fiberglass doesn't burn, the resin burns. The shrink wrap also burns almost like gasoline. Fuel trucks have bonding wire in the fuel hose that is connected to the fuel nozzle. The filling port on the boat should also be connected to the vessel bonding system which also includes the fuel tank. I have fueled plenty of boats on trailers without ever having a problem, but they weren't shrink wrapped. What we don't generally have on boats that large airplanes have is bonding connectors for a clamp-on bonding jumper. On gasoline fueled boats it wouldn't be a bad idea. Even when fueling with the boat in the water a difference in potential that can cause a spark is possible. We also don't know if the vent from the fuel tank was uncovered. If you're adding fuel to the tank and it's not properly vented because the vent is covered in shrink wrap the vapors would enter the boat. I think you're correct that the shrink wrap contained fumes that normally would not be contained. And there was a spark from someplace that caused ignition of those fumes.
Fiberglass boats and air burn. Gasoline does not burn.
I would have liked to have seen the inside.
Few things are more marvelous than an engine that can keep producing reliable power on and on and on...
Why are they fueling the boat?
Why do you eat?
@AlbertHess-xy7ky that's silly. Obviously you shouldn't fuel a boat with shrink wrap. So why fuel at that point???
@@cappc12 How many times has that happened without incident? Hindsight is 20/20
@AlbertHess-xy7ky bruh, WHY FUEL A BOAT THATS SHRINK WRAPPED?! 🤔 Just wait for Gods sake
Too repetitive for me.
Fuel vents on the side of the boat should never be under the shrink wrap. I don’t know if they were in this case. But I do know that refueling ports are on the deck and definitely under the shrink wrap. So the vapors coming out of the fuel port past the nozzle got stuck under the shrink wrap. that’s a much easier path than going out the small fuel vents. Gasoline vapor is more dense than atmospheric air, especially when it’s cold off of a truck and will sink to the lowest place in the boat, which is probably where the battery work was going on. I don’t know about the battery installers, but the guy refueling the boat should’ve been trained regarding this or at least used common sense. If you are unfamiliar with something called the Swiss cheese model, you should become familiar with it. It helps people recognize a potentially hazardous situation, even though they’re only aware of their part in it. Technical notes: conflagration (shockwave less than the speed of sound ) not an explosion. Gasoline is flammable (not combustible), diesel is combustible not flammable. Has to do with temperature at which enough vapor is produced to ignite. Great job, Chris. I’m certain you saved a few lives by doing this.
What boat is he talking about?
Is that a pile of shrink-wrap next to the boat?

Yacht expert that can't spell his own name correctly in his promo ad? lol
Jesus, buy a proper microphone. The audio is so hard to listen to that I couldn't make it past 15 seconds.

You are a weak puke.
Evaporating gasoline it's not a fume it's a vapor. An expert should know that. C'mon now
he said Vapor 6:30
@stevetk8174 I know I watched the whole video. Evaporating gasoline is not a fume it's a vapor yet he calls it a fume and a vapor therefore it leads me to believe that he doesn't know there's a difference.
personnel should not have been present or any work being performed while boat refueling. Full stop 🛑 condolences to the family & pray that the techs injured have good recovery
Next maybe you should become an expert video editor
Have you heard anything about the crew member of a yacht that accidentally threw a Andy Warhol sculpture overboard??
It’s worse than an RV.
Nothing's worse than an RV.
I worked in electronics in the Air Force and even after 20 years (radars) found grounding a bit mysterious. I knew the regs inside and out and stayed safe but some of the theory hard to understand. One thing was something called a floating ground, like the situation on the boat on the trailer seems to have been. What was weird was I was informed certain systems were designed to operate in that condition. But we weren't dealing with fuel. The systems I worked on all required an excellent ground and we often had to go to great lengths to get it. Desert environments were the worst. I never stopped to consider how boats on the water managed it though I guess a good bare metal plate submerged would be all you need.
They is no such as a floating ground. Something is grounded or it is not. The negative of a battery may or may not be "grounded" and will still be called ground. Radar has concerns with ground loops. You have to very carful about ground paths.
@@AlbertHess-xy7ky With a floating ground my understanding is that it is your return path but isn't tied to earth ground so it can drift from minimum resistance and have some potential. Though this is a confusing aspect for me and I am not sure. Yes. Ground loops. I forgot about those. Spent many hours hunting those down and correcting them.
@@tscully1504 Grounded means there is a conductive path to earth. In DC either the positive or the negative can be grounded (Same is true for AC , but just one potential!). Some older cars have this arrangement. They call the frame ground. The cars are not "grounded". Ground loops are proof there is no such thing as ground. All conductors have some resistance. There may be some capacitance and inductance too.
There are 5 things called Ground. DC Ground, AC Ground, Safety Ground, Lightning Ground, and Circuit Ground. You have to specify.
Cars are grounded to the ground when you fuel them
You are a God Damn idiot. Cars contact the ground with a material that does not conduct electricity.
YOU FORGOT GROUNDING SOURCE TO SHIP. Older fueling sights do not have a grounding fuel hose and has a separate ground wire to connect. Same for airplanes, there's always a ground wire.
Not on fuel trucks.
Similar story to the couple in south Florida who lost their leopard catamaran in a fire. One technician working with acetone in the forward hull, another doing electrical work in the aft compartment. Hull filled up with fumes; one spark and boom.
Yeah i saw that - was an Aussie couple and they were back home and a friend called and told them their shit was on fire. What was worse was USCG getting ready to charge them daily fines for hazmat in the water and clean up service
Prayers for those affected by this tragedy!
I love boats and have been on and around them, but I am not a boater or boat owner myself. So I am not educated on this topic like many others here. However, I was completely stunned when you got to the shrink wrapped part (along with all that was already being done on the boat at the same time)... I immediately cringed thinking it sounded like the perfect storm for a disaster. That is because I thought I had understood that the gas vapors are often factors in unexpected boat explosions. Whether that's not priming the boat before actually starting it up or for other reasons (as one commenter mentioned a leak he once had without realizing it). So... it immediately made me want to say, isn't this common sense? But that was before the end of your video. I think this message is an excellent one (regardless of the reason this happened). And done in a compassionate and educational way. I took this as and education and a warning, and an example of how safety can easily be taken for granted, and potential problems or safety issues overlooked, skipped, or forgotten completely. It was the moment when you compared this to "hey, if I've got a 4th of July party coming up and all this stuff to prepare and do... I am rushin around...etc etc." that I thought, wow, so true. With any exciting time, or when someone is hosting or prepping for a big event ... There's seemingly never enough time in the day etc. It can lead to rushing. In this case it appears there were many pressures to get things done. While there are probably several factors here which caused this, I'm corrected on my idea that it should have been common sense. Most likely it's just a much needed awareness to slow down, take the time, and keep safety first (as a group or individual). Everyone involved. If those who don't know, but are working onboard are communicated with and everyone can work together (for safety sake) it might be able to result in a safe experience and outcome. Accidents do happen, that's why they're called accidents. This is a horrible one for sure, and my heart and prayers go out to the family, friends, colleagues, and first responders who have been affected by this tragedy (and rest in peace to whomever lost their life). I am hoping that the time you took to kindly and respectfully put this together, will someday save someone the same tragedy of what happened here. 🙏🏼Thank you.
You raised a lot of good points on safe refueling procedures. One of the things we used to do was that if a boat was refueled while on a trailer, specifically from a fuel truck it had to be grounded. Similar to refueling aircraft. We ran a ground from a known grounding point. In some cases that went back to the battery, and the common ground side of the A/C panel. All switches and inverters in the off position with no potential power. The amount of static electricity created just during the refueling process is crazy. Now mix that with static electricity onboard with vapors. All it takes is a worker to rub up against the storage wrapping with their golf or polo shirt and you would be looking at sky and hearing, "Knocking on Heaven's Door!"
I was responding before I saw your post. I never fueled a boat on a trailer from a fuel truck. Glad to know you grounded them just like aircraft. I think one of the problems if the boat was shrink wrapped is that it covered the fuel tank vent. All the vapors were all contained.
I find it incredulous that a 45 foot vessel would be engineered to be powered by gasoline engines, outboard engines at that! That being said, during fueling or bunkering operations, no other engineering tasks should be undertaken until that operation is completed. Gasoline vapors will settle into the bilge and accumulate because the vapor is heavier than air. During fueling, the tank vents will be venting straight vapor. If the vents are inside the shrink wrapping, that vapor is going straight to the bilge, instead of overboard as the vents are designed to do. Anyone inside of the vessel should have been aware of the vapors and removed themselves from the vicinity - it's not hard to detect due to the strong odor.
I completely agree, and I made it VERY Clear that I am not attempting to establish the Facts around this incident. The Fire Marshall & OSHA will determine the facts after a thorough investigation. However, those investigations will take months. My only goal here is to educate the boating public on safety procedures to avoid any further tragic incidents.
The majority of new boats in the 45 foot range are outboard gasoline powered. It's 2024. You have perfect hindsight. And have never prepped boats for a show.
You do not really have to go off on the battery much. New boat. No proper ventilation. Never before fueled. What can go wrong? When i fuel at the dock, i ask people to step off the boat ... wonder if fuel truck operator should have insisted on boat being vacant before fueling.
You have clear hindsight.
@AlbertHess-xy7ky perhaps i don't. Whatever caused the fire, family with loss will surely sue for damages. At which point their attorney will claim negligence. Everyone involved in the operation will be part of this. That includes fuel truck company, boat owner, and employer. The bottom line is that safety should be a primary concern.
@@KoShuFW The bottom line is safety costs money. If safety were paramount there would be no gasoline on boats. Too much safety, no profit. Capitalism.
@@AlbertHess-xy7ky right. So smoking at the gas pump is ok then. Wonder if the defense attorney will try your line while negotiating settlement.
@@KoShuFW Is that the case here? Who is it at fault? The dead guy?
Wait'll you watch aviation tragedies. Entire families wiped out by wealthy pilots, expensive aircraft, with little to no experience. Same happened in Asia, 25 million dollar yacht being refueled, exploded, 8 dead including owner.
What should be done?
The same thing happened not even a quarter mile from my house. I heard the explosion. The boat had a boat cover installed and the vapors was venting inside the boat. The owner of the boat hooked up the charger and it ignited the vapors. He survived with some burns and the boat was a total loss.
My wife went to that boat show as a kid. Very sorry for the loss. ❤ 🙏
Tragic, and at we all need to educate ourselves to prevent another tragedy.....
Many new battery operated tools are now brushless. The older tools, like drills, saws and drivers had brush motors. These tools generate small sparks in the motor of the tools. Gasoline fumes are more powerful then dynamite.
That is an interesting insight, thank you. & As stated, the Florida Fire Marshall will provide the official results of their investigation. However, I feel it is important to educate NOW, and not 6 months from now, or when the official Investigation is complete.
@@ChrisYachtSales Marshal. Not Marshall. Missing small but important details like you just did are a part of the reason why this happened. Educators need to be extremely attentive to detail, and extremely accurate.
Should a fueling company fill the gasoline tanks of a shrink wrapped boat?
To be clear, we don't have all the facts yet. , the Florida Fire Marshall will provide the official results of their investigation. However, I feel it is important to educate NOW, and not 6 months from now, or when the official Investigation is complete.
The boat show hires Minimum wage workers to work the boat show.....And they're untrained......This is the real problem.
They hire what they can get. Prep labor is a small part of the cost of putting a boat in a boat show.
If the boat had an inboard diesel engine... We'd be watching a different video... 'Nuff said!!!...🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
It's 2024. 80% of the boats in this size range are outboard powered.
@AlbertHess-xy7ky Thanks for noticing 😂😂😂
@@dwightbernheimer331 Should they be banned?
@@AlbertHess-xy7ky NO they Shouldn't... If people are dumb enough to hang more than TWO outboards on the stern of their vessel that's on them 😂😂😂 Thanks for taking the time to respond...👍👍👍
@@dwightbernheimer331 Triple outboards are getting to be the standard in the 45 foot range. It's 2024. You are dumb.
They wouldn't need to be installing batteries to create a spark ,the plastic wrap itself stores static electricity.

This Yacht Expert needs to stick to selling Yachts he's no marine fire investigator and he lost all creditability as soon as he spoke about vessel grounds and marine" lithium" LiFePO4 batteries which are one the safes battery chemistries .
