Just got my set and I will never ride without ear protection again
Fortunate for us there’s you. I’m getting back into riding at 68 and never heard of these devices…..definitely a prerequisite for me. Thank you.
Don't forget to delete that deceleration vacuum valve garbage from the carb.
Great video, very clear, thanks for sharing.
It's a very easy bike to ride even for a newbie. Not that powerful at all compared to newer stuff.
Great video thankyou . I’ve done a bit of riding down there , you’ve inspired to go back again , nice to see a video without shit music . 👍🏻👍🏻
I bought my 1st KLR650 on July 20, 1999 off the showroom floor. I sold it this past April. I did a lot of mods. From bigger front brake, Sargent seat, doohickey failed Eagle mike kit., MCP carb kit, subframe bolt, It snapped on one side. Lowered front fender, Regular maintenance, All LED lights, Off road lights, Progressive springs. Never dropped and I am the only person to have ridden it. 59,872 kms. It left me stranded once in 24 years, 10 months. I told the dealer. Fill the tank. I ran out of gas 2 days later. Dealer did not add gas. Dealer left petcock on RESERVE. I am still emotionally unstable over this. lmao. I bought a 2016 with 12,420 kms. And I have heavily modded it. I am still waiting on stuff. lol
I have the Alpine Motosafes, and they are great. I don't leave home without them!!!!
Hello EscaoeArtist, do you think this bike is suitable for a complete beginner with zero experience? If not, what would you recommend as good adv/dualsport to start with?
I think it would make quite a good bike for a beginner. It's light and has more than enough power and capabilities to keep a new rider interested. My biggest concern would be reliability. This particular bike belonged to a friend of mine. He rode it from Nepal to London and it was his daily commute at home. He was never entirely happy with it, felt he couldn't trust the bike to not break down. After several break downs in remote areas he sold it. Personally, I would buy a DR650 or 400. Great bikes with superb reliability. Learn on that and then move up in the market if you feel the need to.
Good video. I just picked up a 2008 with 21,000kms. it was smoking on trade in, dealer put the 685 kit in, jet kit, airbox mod, new cam chain and cam chain balancer... its already got d606 on it, shes gonna be a fun summer!
5:30 good point on that, for the reliability you got to be able to recover 50% after 8 years is pretty decent. buying used you'd probably get your money back
Great honest review. Thank you 🙏
What windshield are you running?
Its a zero gravity touring screen. But it is attached to a "Klrdash" which props it to a more upright position buffeting the wind over your helmet. Took me ages to find the right set up. It works really well.
I had the inreach for 2 years, it SUCKED! 100 different location tests, 64 went through! You wanna bank on a 64% hit rate if your life is on the line??? Also, the PLB has a MUCH better and robust satellite network worldwide! You want both? Have at it, but i would NOT rely on that inreach for safety! Beware!
Thx im pickking one up for 1700
you doubt the bike because you are brainwashed by brands
my klr 100k love it
Yes the stock screen sucks, but maybe it was designed for a rider who is sitting in a fully tucked down postion. 👍
Thanks again for another great video. Are you still filming ? Mark from Maryland
Thanks Mark. No I haven't filmed for a while now. Life got busy and priorities took over.
Thanks. Simple, honest review. I think the basic PLB seems a great option without all tech and messaging options. Great vid 👍
What are the name brand of the bar guards?
Plastics are shit...this is 10 years old😂😂😂idiot
I literally parked my 08 on the stock bash plate (not by choice) and it survived. The stock handguards are still the originals at 37,500 miles with several big offs.
Thanks cobba got me thinking this did. Particularly being stuck out the north west bush with a spot tracker. No joke if the lats and longs on the wife's receiver are your only lifeline and the b*tch can't even read them off the screen. PLBs👍
New brand? I rode a SWM 175 enduro bike back in 1981, so the brand has been around for a while.
i got one month of heavy use out of them. will get pricey eh
If you prefer IN THE BOOT pants, you can use goretex mountain/brush gaiters to protect the gap as well as be waterproof.
I'm looking at an 06 klr with 14k miles for 2000$ is it worth it??
I'm not familiar with the 2006 models as they are different in a few ways from the 2008 and onwards bikes. Not sure if 2 grand USD is too much or not but 14k miles is not very far since 2006. Definitely worth taking for a ride IMO.
Great video the best i have seen. Thanks
Thanks Terry
I have a RS500 r what an awesome bike , power ,breaks , suspension. Handling , what an awesome bike. I love it .
Excellent review, Thank You! I`ve been searching for a quality ear plug for riding my touring bike while communicating with my wife on intercom and also listening to the stereo at times. I`m gonna give these a try, I ordered a pair of the race plugs. Thanks again 😎
Did you end up getting some? What's your impression?
I did purchase a pair of the race plugs, they do work well but having to use a tool for insertion is a big negative for me. Makes it difficult to judge the proper depth of insertion plus just another thing to fumble with. Also not very good for listening to bike stereo. But they do work well at blocking out wind noise and still being able to hear other sounds such as bike exhaust
Been an owner of three 990s, but all have been the standard. Is the 2007 Adventure S a rare bird? I assume the R replaced the S.
That's correct Paul.
@@escapeartist7900 But would the 07 be considered rarer and worth purchase a well maintained one?
@@pault6281 I believe it is Paul but I'm no authority on that kind of thing. I believe the 990s in general are sought after. Im not even sure where you would find that information apart from being guided by the sales on bike websites.
I’ve got exactly the same model and year, I live in the UK and have done Europe many times, CANADA and the US , 80k miles on original clutch and going strong to this day . Great vid buddy & you should buy one . Billy 👍
I did end up buying one and immediately took it for a 5500k trip into the bush. The bike was brilliant. A little tall and heavy when getting it off the side stand fully loaded would be my only complaint but that's down to me not being tall enough at 5'10. Having said that, I managed.
I bought a stock 2008.Kawasaki green.Changed the tyres big time.Some decent Nobby tyres.Where can I get a engine crash bar kit,Looked ar Amonzon/EBay.
Not sure Garry. This is the only protective piece I don't have on my KLR. Regrettably..
What did you change the suspension to.Did you do front and back.
Sorry Garry, not able to tell you. I did it quite a while ago under the suggestion of my mechanic. All I know is that he ordered the rear suspension out of Germany. Couldn't tell you the brand. Yes, did the front too. Mostly just new parts and oil inside rather than an "upgrade". The whole package made a massive difference to the handling mostly because I'd ridden the stock suspension to death.
Nice review. First time on your channel. I ride an '07... Upgraded the suspension with a RICOR Duel Sport shock and their Intimidator fork valves; and, it has made a big difference. There are other options, of course, but they worked out great for me. You didn't mention what your suspension upgrade was... Or, I missed it. I had minor oil consumption issues, but noticed I didn't have a o-ring seal on my oil cap. Replacing that halved helped a lot. And since I did a carb rebuild... No issues, at all, so far. Yeah, the brakes aren't great, but I ride it more like a cruiser than a sport bike... Usually :-) ✌️
Spot on mate..cheers 🍻
Good one… simple yet informative…
What I love about this, aside from the useful info, it comes without the other 9 minutes of complete bulls...it 99% feel the need to include
Cheers Scott. It can't be said about all my videos but I'm glad you appreciated it in this one.
By chance do you remember the make and model number of the extended shift lever? That short one bugs the heck out of me. Every time I stick my toes down under it I think of hitting something and breaking my ankle.
It is a Moose 3/4 inch extended gear lever specifically for the KLR650. I bought it out of the United States for about $75 AUD. 3/4 of an inch doesn't seem much but it works perfectly with motorcycle boots on. Couldn't tell you the part number sorry.
what mirrors are you running? looks really good
They are a Kawasaki bar end mirror. I can't remember the exact name of them as I purchased them some time ago. I got sick of the mirrors twisting every time I put the bike down. Sorry I can't help more than that. I do like the look of them over the stock mirrors. Cheers.
PLB 4 LIFE! But really, the garmin and zoleo are so gimmicky and clearly marketed as feature packed, and they both have ridiculous subscription fees! PLB is a stronger signal, military use it, no subscription, are good for 5-7 years. People really think they need a screen and texting functionality over signal strength lol
Hi, awsome review, I'm going to add a PLB to my emergency equipment - however, tell me, why would it be a problem to get the exact LAT/LON position from the Garmin Inreach, when you press SOS I thought the position were part of the SOS package which is transmitted?
My understanding is that the plbs transmit a stronger signal giving a more accurate coordinate position which may or may not be an issue depending on what sort of widerness you were stuck in. A difference of 100m or so in a heavy treed area with valleys could make it very difficult to find you from a chopper.
Basicaly it isn’t. Inreach Main advantages of Inreach are two way communication, really worldwide via Iridium, supports all kind of GPS providers (GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, etc.). Main disadvantages are Iridium subscription, battery life and not so precise live position in final searching (PLB and inreach GPS coordinates are not pinpoint, there is some deviation). Not sure how their own sos works (have to evaluate it). All communication is via Iridium only. PLB Main advantages battery life 6-7 years shelf life, activated minimum 24 hours, 406 MHz international standard a lot of satelites, even NOAA weather satelites receive it., precise, easy to use, even without gps fix low orbit satelite could approximate your position. Main disadvantage it is one time use and one way communication device only, usually supports limited GPS providers it takes time to GPS fix. And now WHY is PLB so precise. When it transmits own ID with GPS coordinates. It is just beginnig. PLB .. B stands for beacon. There literally is a homing radio beacon on 121.5 MHZ transmiting signal. SAR planes (and vessels) are eqipped with device showing direction to source of signal + there is a high intensity flashing LED for visual searching mainly at night. . Despite this I am planning month long trip across international date line and can afford to take only one of these devices and still considering inreach. PLB is a must for sailing or road trips or any shorter adventures. But for longer expedition tours is two way communication tremendous advantage, mainly when your relatives don’t know even your approximate position like time zone or continent. ruclips.net/video/vcp3mmyxvE0/видео.html
This wasn’t even on my radar. It looks a lot more comfortable than I expected. I’m getting one. I just bought a 2011 KLR and plan to travel and camp on it.
Being in the US everything that I’ve priced is way cheaper than you mentioned. I bought it used and it already has crash bars and solid hand guards and a pretty good exhaust. The brake lines indicator lights are a good idea. I’m also looking for rear crash bars that don’t block the passenger foot pegs.
Yeah all of the expenses noted in the video will be more in Aussie dollars than US. You'll probably find that pannier racks will perform the job of rear crash bars.
Our wages are significantly higher, we have a living wage expectation along with universal health care. It's worth it.
Thanks good info
Great review
Nice job, well done.
