are you still subbing? I landed on your videos this morning as I researched about subbing and was amazed that you are in Tucson Az and are a part-time actor. I am in Sierra Vista AZ and a part-time model and working toward being an actor. I am starting a substitute job this August. I just subscribed to your channel and keep learning from you.

First tip. DON"T DO IT!!!!!!

I will begin substitute teaching this summer. I’ve never had any type of class room instruction regarding teaching. I’m a little worried due to the fact that I was a terrible assistant when trying to help my daughters with their school work. If anyone can share Any advice, please do so. Thanks!😊

I want to ask because I have Googled this to no avail. I don't have to and or want to forget this situation. It was Columbus Day on October of 2023. So the Saturday night before that, I looked at the sub system, and it said a job to sub for the P.E. coach was available. Before even deciding to take the job, I looked up how far away I would have to drive. It said it was a 10 minute drive. So I happily accepted the job. I got to work and they couldn't find the paperwork, my subplan or anything. So they told me to sub for Transitional Kindergarten, which I really prefer not to do, but whatever. Once I was already there, they came to look for me, and told me I was actually supposed to go to another school, a 45 minute drive from there, because their coach is here one Monday and at the other school another Monday. I was so infuriated. I even forgot my lunch. The next day I went to ask them if I could grab my lunch. They said yes but they jokingly said just make sure you don't grab anyone else's lunch. You think I am in the mood for jokes??? Anyway, I emailed the subdesk and asked what would have happened if I would have just ignored them and gone home? They did not respond. And on their following emal afterwards about something else, they said and going forward bla bla bla. We all know going forward is passive aggressive. I called them to see if they had fixed the problem and their respond was just don't sign up for P.E. anymore. And now I called the school and left a message saying many subs are now realizing this dilemma with signing up for P.E., and asked if they have fixed it in the sub system. I left a voicemail message and they haven't called me back. What do they think we are? Robots? Nah, we are humans. And we don't want to get treated like this!!!

The first 2 are definitely the biggest perks of substitute teaching imo. I love the flexibility of it, I can choose which classes to teach and when the school day is over I have no other commitments like I would if I was a full time teacher. Number 3 based on my experiences so far I agree, the 3rd-5th grade classes I have dealt with have been the easiest to manage. The younger kids take more effort to manage, probably because they're still learning the basics of how to behave in the classroom. I worked with some middle school classes during my student teaching and I definitely don't think I would want to work with middle school students long term. I don't yet have any experience with high school students but I may try subbing for some high school classes in the near future. I agree overall subbing is a great way for new teachers like myself to get a feel for different classes to figure out which are best for you before you commit to teaching a certain group of kids full time. And yeah, it's a good way to build rapport with staff too if you're considering working at a certain school full time at some point in the future. With number 4 just keep in mind your ability to do that will vary depending on the classes you teach. I tend to not be able to do that since I'm mainly subbing for younger kids in settings like music class so it requires more active engagement with them. But at least you can take advantage of the teacher's prep time to do those things, if nothing else. And yeah, I agree with the last point. I'm sure the salary varies depending on where you work but at least where I work it's pretty decent for what I do. I currently work at 2 districts and one pays $110 per day and the other pays $120 per day.

This is the best substitute teacher video that I have ever seen. Most of the other videos are either from full time teachers stating what their expectations are for subbing, or from young hopefuls trying to merge substitute teaching with other careers or propel themselves forward into their own teaching careers. And that is fine. That is actually how I started out subbing 8 years ago, hoping it would lead to full time work. But in that time, I found that I really like the flexible schedule and quality time with the kids. I taught at a private school and really hated all the distractions that were involved. This included but was not limited to, meetings with parents on top of emails and other interactions, grading, lesson planning and other after school activities. My whole life became the school and that is not what I wanted. I wanted a healthy work/life balance. In addition, this school with all its extra activities paid less than I now get paid subbing. So it was just a matter of time until I went back into subbing. But I have questions as to whether this job is sustainable for my mental health and/or what I should be doing instead. I keep coming back to subbing and I feel like this is where God is truly calling me, to be all things to all people. So I have to know, what are some good ideas that made substitute teaching sustainable for the long haul. And I think this video is really good for that. And like he said, at this point it’s probably obvious, but it’s always good to have reminders. I think that’s how the Bible was written as well. If you listen to a church sermon, it’s like I know this, but I’m too thick beaded to remember it! 😂 A goods bites rest and good breakfast and arriving early are all important, but they are definitely things that can fall by the wayside when you get too busy. So this year, I think the thing that I will just try to focus on is not getting too busy to put my best foot forward. I got this, I know I do, I just needed the reminders. Thanks man! 😄

I mostly sub junior and senior high kids, so it is hard to have extra work because I teach so many kids each day.

I'm going to apply to volunteer as a part-time substitute teacher at my old catholic school I went from 6th-8th grade, so I really need these.

This one tip is especially useful to elementary school kids and perhaps middle school as well. Kids can get upset if you don't follow the teacher's routine exactly, but how can you when you've never been to this particular school. I introduce myself, explain my rules, but I also ask them to excuse me if I don't follow the routine completely or do things differently. but if I have a question on how your teacher does something, I will ask as the day goes by. This usually nips that problem in the bud. Children are forgiving and sometimes eager to help you if you ask. If I am subbing for a difficult subject or something I don't have much knowledge in, I will allow kids to work together so long as they are work quietly. I greet students at the door, give kids a high five and smile. For middle schoolers, I have them line up quietly in the hallway before I let them in class. This way, I am in control from the very start. I tell them when I see that they are ready to learn, I will allow them to come in. I do the same thing when we have to line up to go to lunch or somewhere else. When they show me they can be quiet, I will allow them to line up. If they start yapping while in line, I make them sit back down again. I always leave a note to the teacher letting her know how the day went. I try to come to school with pencils or stickers that I can give to students as an award for being especially helpful or well behaved.

the big thing i have to work on is getting the classroom to behave and not talk all darn class without stressing or being mean about it. :)

Haha my very first day I signed up for a SPED class (what I have always taught) and was put into a room with 19 kinders!!! I have never worked with this age group! It started out pretty ruff, but by the end of the day we all had fun "teaching Ms. Sarah how to be a teacher." 🤣😂

Gotta get some groovy glasses, mine are so plain...but not shaving my head, lol! Yes, ENGAGED is a vital ingredient, like baking a cake without baking powder, it will not RISE!!

Thank you for your video's.... I am contemplating subbing, my wife has been doing it for years and now she wants me to do it. I have a personality very much like yourself, I also work in film, acting, directing which is seems to be a strengh for me. I'm very much take charge, even at age 51, Lol However, I did horrible in school and to be totally honest, for some reason a bit nervous. I already have my sub teacher license but I put it off last year due to making a feature movie. I am a very spontaneous person, and hate 9-5 jobs and love as you said. the flexibility of the job so I am thinking about doing it soon. I do have adhd, which I dont like to claim but have been told by many doctors, and I am not organized at all, so this is the one thing that concerns me. I have lost many jobs in my lifetime due to either being board or honestly getting fired. So my confidence level is not very high these days. Thank you again!
