In some ways this video is cathartic and reflective for me. I used to be someone who loved this game and thought it was just the best thing ever, and then I replayed it about a year ago and realized that as a game, I think it's kind of bad, actually. I definitely get what they were going for, and I do still love the aesthetic, art style, and dialogue, but to just look at those three things and not the package as a whole does a disservice to the audience and to the work itself. However, the real problem that I have is that this game has been endlessly praised and lauded as one of the best games of all time in retrospectives and online accounts, as if there's no possible reason this game could have failed. The mechanics of the game are frustrating and broken, and the story suffers from severe pacing issues to say the least; These points are almost never brought up in discussion of the game, save for new players simply being told to look up a walkthrough if they struggle with it- at that point, why even play the game if you're just going to follow exactly what someone else did? Yes, it's impressive and it's aesthetically pleasing for the time, and the dialogue is witty and sharp like a real noir film or novel, but the fact is that it's not a movie, it's not a book, it's a game, and the game part is what lets it down. But with that being said, it's important to appreciate that this game did have something to offer, and it did have a few things going for it, especially at a time when most games were derivative, gritty modern-day or futuristic FPS titles with very little in the way of artistic merit. It's obvious that there was a lot of passion behind this game that simply wasn't able to make it out because of hardware limitations, budget restraints, and release deadlines. Underneath all the executive and corporate horseshit, there's a passion project that poses some interesting questions about how we view the past vs. what it was really like, and allows us to question the concepts of honor, victory, and glory, and whether any of that really matters. I definitely don't unconditionally love the game like I used to, but I gained an appreciation for it having the courage to break the mold and pose deeper questions than most games were capable of or willing to do at the time.

Great video, small correction on Half Life, it's not using the Source engine, it runs on a modified Quake engine that's been retroactively called "GoldSrc". Also the thing with Monster Hunter is while learning the fights is an important part of it all, also being well equipped and good item usage makes a big difference in how fights go. There's a certain point in each of the games where the thing you need to do is grind for materials to get the useful armour sets, partly why some players end up with hundreds or hours of playtime to reach the end of postgame. EDIT: I didn't mean to make this a reply to another comment, but I am battling the flu right now.

It provides me residual satisfaction. The desire of escaping urban life and its baggage is alluring to me. Seems like a chance to return to the self and engage in the most serious reflection. There were many excuses to why I can't hike such as "I don't have the right gear", "there aren't any good trails near me", "I am too tired from work", etc. Now I am in Europe studying abroad, I have 4 months to essentially do whatever I want yet I am here, playing video games and writing a comment on RUclips.

Remakes are supposed to be different. Critiques about Demon Souls and SoTC are somewhat valid, because they are actually more remasters than remakes. There was no expectation around them from what a real remake would bring. People only expected the same game with a new visual coat of paint, and that's what they are for the most part. But SH2R isn't a remaster, it's not even a remake-lite like the ones above, though many fans think that's what it should be. It is, and rightfully so, is more like the Resident Evil remakes. Regarding the originals, yes, it sucks you can't really play the old titles on modern consoles, but there's no real responsibility for companies to constantly release old titles on new hardware. And remakes' purpose is not preservation of the original, nor is it replacing the original. You can and will always be able to play the original.

the SH2 remake just feels wrong and watered down from everything I have seen of it. I want it to be a knock out of the park success, but from the way the gameplay looks, the character models, the fact the the trailers give away way to much of what is suppose to be a nuanced experience that uses ambiguity to its fullest until the game decides to let us in on its secrets and unfold its story. I do think it will be a solid game, like most of these remakes. Few are actually bad products, just lesser, or wholly different from the original. But as someone's whose favorite series is Silent Hill, I just cant get behined the remake as much as I want to. I hope its good and all my fears and concerns are wrong. But only time will tell.

imo, the remake is good to introduce new players to the series. i’ve tried getting some people into the games but the tank controls + fixed angles + boring-ish gameplay just aren’t for them. the dated voice acting found in a lot of scenes is a plus for a lot of people. I disagree with this as it just puts me off of the serious atmosphere. Some (like Mary’s letter) were delivered amazingly, but the ones that weren’t were hard to listen to. im willing to see what direction they’re going for Maria, as her line delivery in the original cell scene was perfect, but the new one seems to go in another direction, which could be interesting to see.

Nice video man. I think you are the only creator right now saying the truth as it is. I've literally played SH1 to 4 countless times on PC (not to count the many times as a kid in 2001 on PS1/PS2) with emulation and without, and they are perfectly replayable and enjoyable. You can't hate The Crow from 1994 just because it doesn't have perfect CGI or shit like that. If something works, works. History needs to be preserved, Konami doesn't give a shit about history, they care about having your wallet. Silent Hill died after Konami destroyed team silent, and what are we doing now? Repeating history exactly like the Homecoming times in 2008: buying SH titles from western developers, and let Konami abuse this franchise all over again. Damn, that one random guy was so right: "The real Silent Hill was the friends we made along the way".

I did like some parts of the presentation of the new trailer however... the script and the layers present in the original have been fully stripped. From nuance to asking these unfortunate actors to perform roles that had already been perfected decades ago. I honestly wouldn't mind it if Silent Hill 2 came back through GOG if they didn't lose the damn source code. I feel this remake has been handled with reckless abandon especially when you see that the dev team had to consult an entire agency to check whether or not adapting the dark and mentally traumatizing moments of SILENT HILL 2. I have no faith and this new trailer upon rewatch only made it worse especially when compared to the original's raw performances that still haunt me. This new one has misreads on the lines and changes that ultimately break apart what was there originally. They claim to be fans of Silent Hill 2 yet they understand very little what made it so powerful that it couldn't be replicated. Also screw Konami going with the ending in Silent Hill 1 where Cybil doesn't join Harry for Silent Hill 3, seriously it sucks. It is amazing that Silent Hill 1 still isn't available anywhere else outside of the PS3 of places.

I think that is one of the reasons why i hold the ff7 remake project in high regard. Revisiting a world and story, but adding a twist to it, making a new journey over that, justifies it's own existence, and allows the original to still be essential as a piece of media from it's time, with it's own quirks and flaws. It always feels to me to be a massive waste of resources to remake something from the ground up and be limited to what the original made, and to not expand on it.

I'm not trying to defend Konami here, for God's sake, don't get me wrong! But as far as I know, the original game's code was lost over time. This is also one of the reasons why we can't play the original version of Silent Hill 2. When they tried to release a remaster two generations ago, it was a disaster. I also know that for this remake, they brought back people who worked on the original game, like the composer Akira Yamaoka and the creature designer Masahiro Ito. I remain optimistic!

Silent Hill 2 on PC isn't actually that hard to play on modern hardware these days, for anyone that doesn't know there's a mod called Silent Hill 2 Enhanced Edition that fixes all of the issues with the PC port and a ton of bugs that were present in all versions, it adds a ton of modern features and remasters the game's graphics and FMV cutscenes. It's honestly wild how well this game holds up graphically with this mod installed. Since Konami has seemingly zero interest in putting the original up for sale, I see no issue in telling anyone that's interested in playing the original, which I highly recommend, that you can get a portable version of it with the mod already installed off of the internet archive's file repository (second search bar from the top on the front page), just search for "Silent Hill 2 Enhanced Edition", it'll be the first result. There's zero set up, just extract it somewhere and play it, you can use the setup tool to check for updates, and you can use the config tool to change whatever settings you want. Boom, you've got a modern PC port/remaster with fewer issues than the game has ever had in its entire lifespan, I've played it myself and it's fantastic. Alternatively, if you have a copy already, you can download just the Enhanced Edition mod off of their website (this Internet Archive upload isn't affiliated with the Enhanced Edition team in any way, to be clear). I'm not necessarily saying this to disagree with any of the points brought up in the video, the original game's availability _is_ a problem, I'm just hoping to help rectify that even if it's just for one or two people.

I second just about everything mentioned in this video. I unironically know no SH fan that would be "excited" for this... "remake". The studio behind it, both the devs and especially the publisher, have a fishy-at-best history. The DEI allegations are a big red flag. The cinematography, both in-game and within cutscenes, is so far an objective downgrade from the 2001 original. And again, the "Last Of Us" style over-shoulder action game template gameplay was already generic and restricting 15 years ago when us SH fans were being tormented by games like the Homecoming and Downpour. Not even Masahiro Ito wanted to make this remake... but sadly, money talks, and Konami has a lot of power in Japan. It's honestly still a very sad time to be a SH fan. The "new audiences", the people acting amazed of the shown footage, are mostly people who were not even alive when the original SH trilogy was still fresh, and they are coincidentally also the generation who grew up with the Uncharted style "cinematic" slop. It's honestly painful to see such crowd then jump on the old fanbase, one that has seen a lot of hardships the past 20 years, ignoring and belittling criticism (which BTW already yielded some improvements, ie that starting mirror scene), all while parroting the old "The OG game is still there!" mantra... not necessarily even realizing that they're outright encouraging p1racy. Something the franchise has pretty much relied on, alongside with the SH fanbase's hard efforts to keep the games available and playable on modern (PC) systems for many years.

Well it is the same with RE2, People were just more happy to see it because its a bigger community. You can not play RE2 and 3 in their original form without shuffling with hardware. Its the same situation, I want to play the original RE2, But the remake is RE2 now and that's alright because its good. I hope the remake is good enough to come close to "replacing" the original, even though You can't. You can't replace the original Dead Space or Resident Evil or Until Dawn because people have their memories attached to it

There are absolutely zero, I mean zero things in the way of enjoying the original Resident Evil games, from 1-3. The early games were made available on numerous consoles, using each and every console's special gamepad to it's fullest. The PC version also received incredible improvements, so you can just get one of those unaltered, thus pretty bad looking original SD-console variations, made for old CRT TV-s, a decade before HD Screen norms were widely made popular... Or you can go with the PC port, improved beyond perfection, made widely available on the GOG videogame store. If someone really can't setup the PC version, can't make the purchase, or can't make the minimal alterations to the game required for the improved looks and compatibility + gamepad support, well... Then he or she should just avoid playing those games altogether: they simply won't make it past the first hallway...

Very good Video! It's a Crime to hide this Masterpiece (OG SH2) from modern gaming Landscape. Konami should be ashamed. A proper Remaster of the first 4 Games would be at least a little Reparation for the last 2 Decades. But no! Eat the Remake and shut up! Thanks Konami...

Your scripts are really good! Love watching each new video you put out! I'm cautiously optimistic of the SH2 remake. How do you remake one of the greatest games of all time. Regardless if the remake is good or not the original will always still be there. Best case we can hope for is a competent version that will introduce new people to something I hold dear.

I find it extremely ironic that people siding with the de-make mention that "the OG will still be there!" ... but where exactly? On Ebay, where it costs 300 dollars? On a torrent site that may not be mentioned? On a Drive link only 4chan knows? Yes, the original IS still acquirable. But it needs to be hunted down at this point.

Fantastically said. A remake needs to have something to say, a reason to exist that cant be just adapt to modern market trends. In my opinion, you either only add minor improvements like modern hardware support and better resolution, or you make a new interpretation about that game leaving your mark. Anything else is disrespectful and money grabbing.

I've played multiples remakes, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, Medievil, to name a few. I NEVER thought that ANY of these remakes could replace the original ones, ever. Even if people pretend that they CAN replace the OGs. It's simply not possible because these remakes wouldnt exist without the OGs. I DO agree about the accessibility, the Video Games industry doesn't make enough effort to keep old games alive, unlike Movies or Music. But the rest is too black and white thinking to me, I don't see anything worrisome about it. Only thing that sucks is how trash new games are and this whole stupid era we're in right now. But besides that, I still have my own opinion and no one will ever change it, Remakes will NEVER replace Originals, period.

Nice and punctual video that hits a lot of my anxieties with the trends I'm seeing with remakes. There's so much work and love put into these remakes but there's so many times I'm left wondering to myself why this remake isn't allowed to be its own original project that builds off of the previous works that inspire it. And the obvious answer is of course, money lol. On the other hand, there's something more disturbing happening that can occur (and is occurring tbh) as this goes unchecked. It's weird to see these remakes be used in a way that replaces rather than adds to the prior works. There's a ton of issues that come with this when games are viewed as more than just a product to consume. An obvious one is there's always the risk of someone claiming ownership of someone else's work in these remakes. Then there's the layer of how this ends up removing whole swaths of history that make up the medium's culture by sanding down the bumps and hurdles that came with it on a technological, cultural and artistic level.

  • @derekb4977

I can't support remakes for this reason it's theft developers making other people's work, your video needs millions of viewers so many are still delusional over remakes and why I think they should never be happening especially game remakes because certain people won't play original content and it should be port to current consoles the first 4 games only keep them alive.

Yeah Konami can't even preserve MGS1. Many don't know this but MGS1 on PS3 port, has context sensitive rumble to each cutscene, it's not strong but they are precise that emulate sound effects. *I played MGS1 without rumble so I finished MGS1 many times with Tank Controls. on this cheery note - I don't like RE2R, no charm, no sense of tone, nothing but less than the original. RE3R is just a very poor arcade game. RE4R - by the time I played it, the amazing Signalis was out, and the Peculiar Calisto Protocol which I have love hate relationship with. RE4R was - me playing a zombie game with a stone face, when zombies were the peak of horror and childhood trauma, in a game which I fall asleep. RE4R VR2 - now that was special, I still replay it just for that.
