I started making these this weekend, i like to have a few projects going at the same time. But this is a nice and relatively simple project. I made 2 thus far but i think i have to make at least 4 or 5 more to make it look like yours, guess that is why you are the teacher and i am very junior :) Thanks a lot ... oh question at 20 sec, the 1st gouge. this is a 1 1/2 mm but is this a shallow you mostly use or more round?
I will answer your questions. I will start with the shallow ones. The deeper ones are harder to correct. I proceed a little at a time, starting with shallow ones.

Did you succeed the 1st try or did this go different? I feel i need many tries before there are no mistakes
My teacher told me to make at least 20. Of course, I neglected to do this depending on the subject matter. :)

I am on the 4th try. Did not finish one i am happy with. Lot to learn, especially keep it round. That and offcourse the hands and feet on the left side. I keep on trying.
Beginners should be aware that the shape tends to be egg-like. Check the outline often.

It is important to use blades gently. Remember to use the blades you create gently as well. Be thin when sharpening.

Another very valuable instruction. I feel it does not need any translation and i will try this subject soon. I feel very lucky thinking i can create one myself using your instruction. Ofcourse the end result will not be like yours yet but it will be good enough to be enjoyable in the time after that and perhaps good enough to give to someone as a present :)

Took me many years to learn how to sharpen. Still i have trouble with some knives. Especially stainless is unrewarding. VG10 is an exception, for me atleast
It is said that the path to mastering Japanese sharpening takes 10 years. However, even after 10 years, I am still a work in progress. It is a steep road.

Can you show us your tools and how you make them?
For ordinary wood carving netsuke, a commercially available blade will do. As your skill improves, you can make your own blades to suit your carving. Different blades suit different people. The blades I use for my recent works like mine are introduced a little in the membership.
