What great work to get a BLDC motor to brake. I tried it with my handbike for a wheelchair which has a 1000W 48v motor. max 45A controller. Regenerative braking is not possible because it's a geared motor with a freewheel clutch inside. So I left with 2 BRAKING TECHNIQUES: Dynamic braking Plug braking (or Plugging) I have a reverse function on my controller, but never tried to activate it when i'm driving forwards, only standing still and then activating. I presume it's a brutal force to use this Plug braking (or Plugging) method. I tried Dynamic braking with 3 solid state relay DC-DC (SSR) 1 to deactivate the power to the controller. The second one to shorten the blue phase wire and green wire phase. The third SSR is used for the yellow phase wire, with an extra switch for more braking force (all 3 phase shortens). But if I use the throttle the motor tries to spin but stops after a second. After this test it turns out that one of the SSR is defective (blown up) . That is strange because it was a 200v 100A version. I presume that the load site of the SSR has a negative and a positive pole for the load. But I forgot that those phase wires change their negative and a positive voltage and that's why the SSR blows up? The second test did just blow the other SSR. So I thought I must use a Diode between the phase wires. I used some Ideal mosfet diodes. Blue phase on out Green on In and yellow on the IN of the other diode with a jumper on the out to the green. I tried it by hand to move the wheel and it actually brakes and it breaks more when switching the yellow wire included. But this is just a test by hand, now I must buy new SSR's to activate and deactivate it. And maybe I must also use 3 diodes on the controller? So that no power can't go back to the controller. Normally I know it will flow back, but then the wires are not shorted. So better use diodes also? I hope you give me some advice. Thanks.

Thanks bud. I got mine going thanks to you. It doesn't seem to be running up to max speed but maybe it is. Can you advise on getting it to reverse with joystick down and forward joystick up? I thought the -255,255 took care of that but not what I'm getting

The wire you connected vr to pin #5 has raised a question. I have a riorand esc and it doesn't have a vr identifier but does have a pwm pin. Im new to this so forgive the ignorance. Would connecting the pwm on the riorand to pin 5 accomplish same thing or should I connect it to a different pin?

Does it make much difference which arduino used? Would i need 2 esc to run 2 motors independant or would one esc handle the two and arduino code motors independent?
