Austin is NOT ALONE: I live in the Boston area and I can tell you many of the things you mention about Austin are true here: the traffic is famous as a nightmare, pretty much all day long. Parking is a joke....you just can't find a space in the downtown area. It's an older city, so the streets are narrow. lots of one-way street. We're about second-only to NYC with how expensive it is to live here. Turnover of restaurants..Many popular, good places were killed by Covid...they never came back, and many other close after a short time. PLUS: we get snow and bad winter weather here. From Sept to June, the city is overrun with students. Sure, there are lots of colleges here, including some world-class ones, but they take over everything, turn it to a mob scene.

I moved from Northern Virginia to Kingwood Texas, outside Houston, 3 years ago and I Love it! I am a woman and after I ouch my house (a littker smaller and pne story and a LOT cheaper) I went to stock up the house wit groceries and other supplies the first time and was SHOCKED when a man offered his help loading the SUV. I am not a very trusting person after NV, but I thanked him and stepped away as he loaded my vehicle. Once done, he thanked me for trusting him enough to allow him to help as he had noticed my VA Disabled Vet tags and knew I might be a little nervous. He tipped his hat, welcomef me to the area, and went into the grocery store. Taxes are less (federal and local sakes tax,and food tax, bu no state tax). He wasn for't the only onr. People look you in the eye, say ello, and give good durectionsvif you need them. Most everything is here. My sisters, long time rpTexas citizens, have shown me around to many local shopping and eating locations. There are some absolutely wonderful parks here; there is even an amusement park , zoo, and haunted house tour, as well as one of the biggest shopping malls in the country if that is you thing. Its not perfect; there as been some incidents in nearby Houston that have been in the news recently, but its less tan DC area for sure.

TBH I just would like to move somewhere hot that doesnt have tons of mold issues in houses. Im assuming since its high humidity that may be an issue over there. Many people dont clean the AC coil in their HVAC and spread mold all over there houses, if in an apartment building, good luck. I feel like most cities are simply pricey and a pain. I think for me a suburb with lots of restaurants and warm weather would be ideal. Cities can feel sterile to me. The only benefit would be places to eat. Nashville seems like it has about the same humidity but tornadoes and it rains often. I can see why NJ is a bit pricer with property taxes. Its like one huge suburb laced with all types of resturants, fairly low crime, youre typically close to alot of stores, malls, restaurants, etc. You can be isolated if you want, theres a beaches with warm water etc. Rents just too high everywhere in the US it seems, anywhere cheap seems too isolated and sketchy.

If you stay west of IH 35, there is less humidity in Texas (and as you get further north as well.) lots of nice little towns close to Austin but still not crowded. Dripping Springs, Wimberley, Blanco, Johnson City, liberty hill, llano, burnet, marble falls. Check some of them out -Chris

I was born in San Antonio, but my mother and I moved to Austin (1943) when I was only 2 weeks old. We were waiting for my father to return from WWII. Lived in Austin, off and on, until I went to UT. I returned to "my hometown" after retiring in 1995. I had visited family and friends regularly over the years, so I wasn't too severely shocked when I returned for good(?). Your devastatingly accurate post brought tears to my eyes, even though a majority of the places and things you grieved for were parts of what I considered New Austin, I feel your pain, maybe doubly or triply. Keep up your honest reports; a breath of fresh air these days.

Lived in Austin 2 times in my life. In 99 to 2002, it was fun, thriving and booming for music. A lovely place to be. Moved back ( married this time ) in 2015. It was almost double what it was in population by then, nothing what it was back in the day. The then Mayor changed the camping laws thereby creating issues with increasing homeless incampments and resulted in devalued property in the dt area. City council is aptly called the clowncil because they are run by self serving idiots. We lived in Wilco not Travesty co. We chose to move in 2021 and it was the best choice for our family. Beach living is so much better for the soul than sitting in traffic for hours on end to commute to a job that you dont like and live in an overtaxed shoe box.

I quite calling it Austin, but I will not tell you what I called it. So in 2007 I woke up to this fact: there is no law that states we have to stay in Austin. So I moved to San Antonio, but in 2012 I moved out of the USA and where I live I spend $100 a month for food, $100 a month for rent and I am free. Austin HAD good memories, but it grew and soured.

Also the driving here is horrible, its so bad im baffled how some people here have their liscence. And the weather sucks. Its not really worth it to me unfortunately. Also, I have no idea about licensing or insurance from rental companies here, so I'd check that first. But, that said, Overall, I don't think you'd have an issue driving on your own. Google maps is definitely your friend while you're driving (or some other GPS app, I just prefer google.) Outside of that, our roads are not as big as NYC or LA or Houston. I think our widest roads (IH35 through downtown) are 4 lanes in each direction but most are 2 lanes each way or smaller. Thank you for your reply, definitely different in America, you can turn on a red light, or u turns on main roads...will do some more research..@livinginaustintx

@@potters_bbq Yes, you can turn right on a red light in most places. If it's not allowed there will be a sign "No Turn On Red". Same with U-Turns, if it's not allowed there will be a sign with a picture of a red upside down "U" arrow with a line crossing through it. That part is pretty self explanatory.

WARNING: You want to live somewhere that’s thriving when things go down you want a functioning area to live in. And about people leaving: sure, if you moved to Austin out in creepy areas not IN Austin. It’s hard if you want a big house, but I live in Austin and it’s the best. I wouldn’t live anywhere except in Austin in the actual city. I’m on a quiet street but I am in walking distance to everything! and I just love the vibe here. You can be a Republican in Texas a Democrat here too. It’s the best when it’s mixed. Do you want to laugh about things and stop being so freaked out and polarize there’s a lot of comedians here that will help you.

Great video. You mentioned Bastrop when talking about Blanco's proximity to Austin, but isn't Bastrop east of Austin? Maybe you meant to say something else. Thank you for showing us Blanco.

Bastrop is definitely east of Austin, yes. I can't find the moment you're talking about in the video, but I may have mis-spoke. But yes, Bastrop is between Austin and Smithville on the way to Houston on Hwy 71. -Chris

It’s been like that for the last 15 years the river walk was packed back then. No elbow room then the home owners or condo put up a fence so no sitting on the grass I never went back after that.

Nothing bad at all. There is GREAT bass fishing there. It is a power plant lake so it's a little warm in the summers, but that makes it amazing in the shoulder seasons. It's not huge and you can't own waterfront there, but it's a cool lake and, honestly, I forgot about it when I was talking through things to do Thanks for watching! -Chris
