Should I Cruise? Top 5 Reasons | MYTHS debunked | 5 Minute Cruise Tips
Просмотров 2547 месяцев назад
In this short and punchy video, I explain the TOP reasons why cruising is a great way to travel. I also debunk some myths about cruising... These are Cruise Tips, all under 5 minutes!!
If you’re an alcoholic, like my wife and I, the drink package is worth it. I drank at least seven or eight cocktails every day. Not to mention wine, beer, smoothies and coffee.
My advice as an occasional cruiser. Plan your trip and purchase what you think may enhance your trip and make it more enjoyable. If you like to drink and try diiferent cocktails buy the package. Even at 80 bucks a day it will be worth it. You can figure it out a bunch of different ways but at the end of the day you are there to have a great time and pinching pennies isnt going to enhance your trip.
I like your outlook! Thanks for sharing!
I get the refreshment package and buy the two or three alcoholic drinks I'd order. So much less than the drinks pkg.
Sounds like a good strategy based on your utilization!
I was able to get drink package bundled with internet for $80/person/day for 7 night cruise during Black Friday deals. It was 35% off for drinks and 20% off for internet. That's the lowest I've seen for drinks.
Not bad! They really dial up their marketing skills with these bundles. I’ve seen other packages bundling in the Hideaway Beach Club or Thrill Water Park at Coco Cay with the deluxe beverage package and internet. I encourage you to continue scoping out the prices of the package and also the individual pieces to see if an even better deal comes along before your cruise. For example, buying internet for one device on its own could be between $14 - $21 per night ….but if you are traveling with others in your cabin and you bundle the internet (e.g., there are three people and one of you gets an internet package with three devices), the per-device cost per night comes down a lot… such as $11-$15 per device per night. So it might make the drink package portion of your package implicitly a little more expensive.
You should save your money and use that money as your"drink package" fund while on board and pay for drinks as you go. On a 7 or 8 day cruise, very few will have the 8-10 drinks/day to break even. Most drink more on days 1-3 and then slow down or take a break and Royal knows this. They have the pricing down to the dollar per drink, so why spend 450.00 up front when you put that same money in your account, pay the on board charges when you leave and it will be less than 450 in most cases.
That’s a practical idea; thanks for sharing! I’ve talked with crew members onboard and they also know that the drink package utilization is way higher in the first several days of the cruise.
I recently went on a cruise in October. The drink package was over $800. I believe I drank about 6 to 10 drinks per day that included wine for the full seven days. I spent a little over $480 (for 2 ppl- ) just for drinks alone for seven days. In the early 2000s I would say between 2001 and 2008 drink packages were not that expensive but now the drink packages are almost equal the cost of a three day cruise! So no thank you!
Sounds like you’re making the right decision for you; way to go!!
I know I a cheap b***tard. The I've already paid for it so now just relax and enjoy the vacation driver is a key factor beyond the simple maths for me. The tips thing is a pity, having it included in the base price would be much more palletable. Tips are so counter cultural for Aussie or Brits.
Thanks for watching! I like your approach of just putting it behind you, enjoying the package now that you have it, and focusing on having a great trip!
Booked a cruise for 2026, but i dont see anything for the drink pakcage yet, assuming it will pop up in the apl when it gets closer to the sailing date, maybe fall of 2025? After my previous cruise, i learned that a drink package will probably be worth it. Because of the 18% gratuity charge with each purchase (which i think is bogus), it can add up to more than the daily price of a drink package.
Yeah, it’s frustrating when the Cruise Planner items aren’t available yet for a sailing that’s far out. My 2026 sailings also don’t have the meal plans or drink packages open for sale yet. I’d suggest checking every once in a while to see if it’s popped up; it may very well appear for you before Fall of 2025.
Don’t forget you also get bottled water, coffee, lattes etc.. and juices. It’s also very convenient because when you buy a drink, you give them the card and walk away, when you do it w/o the drink package, you have to have a receipt printed then sign it and it takes longer to process and it matters when its busy. Thanks for the video!
I agree that those other non-alcoholic drinks add to the value of the deluxe beverage package and should be factored in! The convenience factor is a plus as well.
Water free, coffee free, juice free in buffet. God forbid you wait another 2 min to sign. Where else do you have to go. Terrible advice
@@candlechef6786 Do what you want Karen, I’m just stating the facts on a drink package vs none.
I got my drink package a couple months before Black Friday and still saved.
That’s awesome! Can’t hurt to keep checking to see if you can lock in an even better deal.
There is also a convenance factor of not hiking to the buffet to get a drink, as well as other drinks available with the drink package.
Totally agree; there’s value in not having to count how many drinks you’ve had (to see if you’re breaking even with a la carte), and also value to having paid for the drink package upfront rather than getting a hefty drink tab at the end of the sailing.
I would love to see the cruise line off a smaller drink packages for example a ten drink package or a five drink package per day and then price it appropriately
That would be nice to have those options! On some sailings (and unfortunately there’s no way to tell until you’re onboard), they have a ten drink package (that’s a total of 10 drinks for the whole cruise) which is cheaper than buying 10 cocktails a la carte, and it sort of works like a punch card such that you can share it with others. I’ve only seen it a handful of times, and a lot of folks wish it were more widely available.
Great tips!
Deluxe Beverage Package is more than just beer, wine and mixed drinks. You have to include bottled water, specialty coffee, energy drinks, fresh squeezed juice and soda in your calculations.
I agree, they definitely contribute to the value of the package and should be included in one’s calculations to see if it’s worth it!
My first cruise was this year. I justified the price of the Deluxe Package with the inclusion of barista coffee which wasn't Starbucks and fresh unlimited health smoothies. Neither of these were a thing. Correct me if I'm wrong, but you also have to pay for the last day of the cruise when all the bars a closed and they are in a rush to get you off the ship. Ordering a bottle of water with each drink and putting them in the cabin fridge was rather handy for day trips.
The deluxe beverage package is only charged for the number of nights on your cruise, so you don’t pay for disembarkation day. You can, however, still use the package on disembarkation day… even though the bars are closed, you can get a Bloody Mary or a mimosa at Windjammer. For those mimosa fans, you can ask for fresh squeezed orange juice to elevate it! The bottled water is a good idea to save them for later; they also have Powerade at various spots like Promenade Cafe.
Very hard on your liver, kidneys and pancreas.
obviously American? 5 cocktails a day to break even? that’s just for one morning!
Funny! American or not, I know that my tolerance and tastes have changed over the years….
2 years in a row I booked the drink packages I wanted for my family for my upcoming cruises, for a good discount. Deluxe, Refreshment and Class Soft Drinks. The price never got better later for an August, then March cruise. I could have done the cancel - rebook suggested if it did. I could have also just canceled if I calculated my cost to be higher than my anticipated spend. Add up all the drinks you might get and be conservative, since its a daily price. Others noted about coffee, shakes, water, smoothies and soda as well as drinking less as the week goes. If your cruise is port intensive, with long days off the ship, it can be hard to use the package fully every day. Calculate the tip into your estimates - since it will be added. In the example it was not included in the by the drink cost, then stated as an add on for the package. Its an add on for both sides of the calculation. Personally, I'm at Diamond now and get 4 drinks a day. They can be any kind of drink, but I enjoy a pina colada during the day, wine at dinner, then two more drinks through the evening. So I pay for the Refreshment package and get water bottles, coffee 2x a day, energy drinks and a mix of coke or mocktails. No reason to wonder if I should have another drink since its paid for.
Thanks for the comment and sharing your approach! I know for some people, there’s also a convenience factor that adds value to the deluxe beverage package… not having to worry about whether you’ve “gotten your money’s worth” on any and every day. The Diamond drinks are definitely important to factor in as well. There’s some strategy that can come into play if you have two people with Diamond status spread across two cabins…. One of them can get the deluxe beverage package, and gift their diamond drinks to the other person without the deluxe beverage package… leaving one person with unlimited drinks and one person with 8 Diamond drinks. Lots to consider for sure! Thanks again for sharing!
You only named alcohol, there are other things like milkshakes and coffee drinks that it will cover.
Yep, those items definitely add value to the deluxe beverage package!
I did the drink package my first cruise on RC. Had 15 drinks the first two days and then brought it down to 5 on day 3 and all following days. The human body is not designed to consume that much booze daily. I don't regret getting it (as a first-timer) but I wouldn't do it again.
It’s always good to listen to one’s body and find the right rhythm for yourself, as everyone is different. Thanks for tuning in!!
The drink PAKAGE is for ANYTHING YOU DONT CHEW execpt soup. It's called DRINK PAKAGE not a LICKOR PAKAGE. grow up.
@@CynthiaRockroth who would pay money just to drink pop/water/tea on a vacation? I paid the extra money for alcohol. I'm glad I did it (first time cruiser) but no need to do it again.
@rhythm28 people whom drink the full pakage are DRUNKS, AND TAKE NO RESPONSIBLY FOR THEIR ACTIONS. meaning they don't care whom they affect. If you want to get falling down drunk, you can do it at home cheaper and without a passport. You are also less likely to get arrested, get divorced, go to prison for stupidity, and loose your job.
@@CynthiaRockroth OK mom. I did take advantage of the drink package. I was not stumbling around the casino or throwing up outside on the deck. There was no responsibility to take because I knew my limits. Go back and read what I said. I will not get the drink package again because that's not me. Perhaps you're on the wrong cruise lines where you've seen that sort of behavior. Consider going on something a little more your speed if that's the case.
Your math is TOTALLY off! Because you were only talking about alcoholic drinks, but the package covers every drink. Every bottled water is $3 or $4, a soda $3, gourmet coffee $3-$5, a Johnny Rockets milkshake $4, fruit smoothies, mocktails and fresh squeezed juices cost extra also. It's not just about how much alcohol you drink. All of these other drinks add up to a LOT! So even $75 a day is totally worth it, but by staying on the lookout for sales, I've never even paid that much.
Thanks for the feedback! I completely agree that the non-alcoholic items contribute to the value of the drink package. The spirit of my advice is to make sure that the drink package economically makes sense for each specific person, based on their utility of it. Kudos to you for being a diligent and informed consumer!
Sure. Do the math. 4 sodas, 2 coffees, 1 milkshake, 2 smoothies, 2 cocktails, 1 beer, 1 glass of wine every single day just to break even. That’s a lot of beverages. For a lot of people that would be too much, for others not enough. But her point was you need to do the math going in to know if it’s worth it or not. Also, to consider is the convenience of not having to swipe a card and tip every time you get a drink. The convenience might be worth it.
Excellent tips! I enjoyed your presentation of the content and subbed. I look forward to viewing more of your videos. Have a wonderful day! :-)
Their drink package and wifi is a ripoff!!!
If you get the WIFI, you can use it for 1-4 devices at 1 time. So that means you can also use 1 WIFI for many devices, you just need to share it. My wife and I get a package for one, then we share it during trip, mostly where I ask if I can use it for 30 minutes, then back to her. That's not a cheat or hack, just how it can be used. I also use the WIFI in American and Canadian ports for no cost, just on my Verizon plan.
You like so many others only consider alcoholic drinks will make your break even point. Fresh squeezed juice, specialty coffees and many other non alcoholic drinks are included, and where we have used nearly half the cost of a drink package. The best price I have seen is 35% off, which beats the popular buy one get one half off.
I agree that these other items definitely contribute to the value of the drink package!
They use dynamic pricing based on supply and demand, the more they sell the higher the price.
@@catandroyadventures thanks for sharing; I didn’t know that part!
Alcohol is MUCH more expensive than some coffee and juice though, so that is why most folks always mention alcohol.
Thank you for your tips 😊

@@dw566 thanks very much; I truly appreciate the feedback!
Where do I find information on what you mentioned such as the travel safe (never heard of that).
I found mine on Amazon. If you search for travel safe, you’ll see some options come up. It has a cord which you loop around your beach chair or something else, and it clicks back into the safe with a combination lock. It’s not as secure as a bigger safe that you’d find in a hotel room or your cruise cabin, but it gives you that little extra bit of comfort that someone can’t easily swoop in and grab your valuables.
Good tips
You must be the ONLY person who gives the Same exact tips I give. Logical
@@nnajj01 funny coincidence!
I've never paid for bandaids on ship. Just ask at customer service!
@@TracyKMainwaring great idea!
Thank you for the great tips. Do you recall where you purchased the light weight beach bag?
@@simoneheidrich9081 I got that bag a gazillion years ago, so unfortunately I don’t remember. I just did a quick google search for “mesh beach bag” and a number of options came up that are just like mine. Sorry I couldn’t be more specific!
why don't you hang up your toiletry kit in the bathroom with a magnetic hook? No need to use towel rack.
@@pamrochon5527 I’ve found that the standard bathrooms onboard don’t have much wall space other than under the towel hooks or behind the commode. The suites definitely have more space to hang things such as a toiletry organizer. On my next sailing, I’ll be on the hunt to see if I can make it work to hang it elsewhere in the bathroom. Thanks for the suggestion!
Some cruise lines don’t have free messaging so I like to bring post its and pen to leave notes for others in cabin on where I’ll be. The dimmable night light is important even balcony rooms get really dark.
@@katwilson-x6k Awesome idea on the post it notes!
We take a small magnetic dry erase board. It also works for notes to our room steward. A note of thanks or a good day message is always welcome.
Good tip; thanks for sharing!!
Hi This, is Guillermo the nurse from Tampa. Great tips. Thanks
Great video!
Who is your trip insurance company?
I’ve used different companies along the way… Allianz, AIG Travel Guard, and Nationwide. I picked them based on comparison shopping on insure my trip dot com.
Great tips. I always use a packing list, so I don't forget anything and so I don't over pack.
I checked with my local bank and they offer the whole medical insurance for over $40 just for your 1 trip. So if anything happens to you on the trip where you get sick or injured. You call up a special number then tell them what happened and they take care of it.
