William Gillock: Sonatine
Pianist Paul Orgel performs "Sonatine" by William Gillock (1917 - 1993), a work in 3 movements:
I. Moderately fast
II. Slowly, with drowsy movement
III. Vigorously, rhythmically
I'm not sure whether people know this piece or the unpretentious American composer, William Gillock, who wrote such fresh, engaging "Intermediate" level piano music. His Sonatine has a sort of Franco-Russian flavor with hints, perhaps, more of Milhaud than Debussy, more Kabalevsky than Prokofiev. I recall the pleasure of how well it fit in my hands when I was young, and recorded it recently when I realized it had remained permanently in my memory.

I refrain from being specific about it, wishing not to interfere with the imagination of the listener engaged in...

I haven't heard such a poignant dirge in a long time. Curt Cacioppo's music, which I had previously known mainly from his string quartets, is neither shrill nor pathetic, but just as dignified and loving as the words Paul Orgel finds in the interview about his late son. Mary Bonhag has a very beautiful and sure-footed voice.

My dear father, I dance with you in my dreams every night. The fact that you are gone forever fills me with sadness when I wake up, but I want to create one last beautiful memory for you with elegant music and leisurely steps. Father, don't let go of my hand. Please look at my face. By the end of this song, the dawn light will have taken you away. I will make eye contact with you and send you a smile. Now I have to close my eyes to see you.
