Grazie!
It does no disservice to the memory of James McCracken’s Otello, for which his acting was acclaimed more than his singing, to point out that the timbre and tessitura of his voice are entirely unsuited to this and other ballads. The recording is not helped by the aural separation between the pianist and the singer, who sound as if they’re in different buildings.
es mi pariente y me emociona y enorgullese escucharlo
Beautiful singing ! Bravo PRIMO ZAMBRUNO!
My main interest in this version is historical. I used to hear this rendition on classical music stations, and one time I heard that this was one of the first electrical recordings made back in 1925. I have heard far better renditions -- without the rolled R's -- but I still like this rendition due to its historic importance.
ALTRI TEMPI.......
Un saludo al gran Enrique Ambrosio, y excelente voz la de este tenor Zambruno, como pocas, nunca lo había oído, me ha gustado mucho, como tambien me gusta la voz del Mtro. Ambrosio, excelente tenor y orgullo mexicano.
James MacCracken lacks the technique to pull off singing this and almost anything else naturally. Notice I did not say he lacks the voice. Why? He uses a coloring that adds weight to the sound. Then he adds volume to that and the voice shakes. Then interpretation is square. Not a single word or tone expresses a shred of meaning. Shockingly he does not seem to care. Two singers stand out in these songs: Francis Keeping (who is alive and on Revervenation and John McCormick. Both Francis and John are a revelation. I will pass on ever hearing MacCracken sing it again.
Spot on. His voice is way too heavy for this song..
Gracias por publicar esta bellísima versión la cual disfrutaba al escucharla en el fonografo del abuelo en mi infancia.
I have a soft spot for him-saw his Otello a number of times, which was a great accomplishment-but he was to some degree a one trick pony. Of course, here, we have what is often wrong with his singing-despite his earnestness and energy-just belts it out becasue he can, or that was the only way he could sing?
I absolutely agree with Steve Van Dien. Simplicity is how to sing these kind of songs. Some opera singers cannot "downsize" for folk songs and they lose the simplicity - as Mr. McCraken has, sadly, done here.
Every Christmas Eve I listen to this wonderful record and Ernestine Schumann-Heinks recording of "Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht". These two together with Jussi Björlings swedish version of Menuit Cretiens (Adolphe Adam) bring me in the right mood for Christmas.
overwhelming
Complimenti per la voce, brunita e scura.... bravo
for years he sang this at midnight mass at St. Patrick's Cathedral in NY.
lovely , and like the sensitive fade out at the end.. thanks for posting
