Flying Dutchman dinghy sailing in Budd Inlet, Olympia Washington
A typical late afternoon summer sail with gusty SW wind. This was confirmation that the new DIY carbon mast and boom are a success. The process to build these was photo documented here: photos.app.goo.gl/SpSRpdwvPvLHx4kV8

Wind had disappeared when we launched. The Opti kids were out training. After a bit of dull sailing, we were hit with a header puff out of nowhere, which I couldn't respond to fast enough. The boat rolled over on top of us, back-winded, for the viewing pleasure of one of Olympia's waterfront restaurants.
Flying Dutchman (FD) sailboat rebuild project
Просмотров 3,3 тыс.2 года назад
This is a summary of the last four years of rebuilding and then sailing this once proud Flying Dutchman sailboat. Originally built in 1973 and sailed regionally in California, I picked it up in a poor state as a project in 2018. The discovery of a rotten balsa core in the hull led to an almost complete rebuild. The outer fiberglass of the hull, the centerboard and centerboard well, many rigging...

    many cherished years on the FD. Now after the decades, I'm in a different class but I won't ever forget the FD! ruclips.net/video/jLp_nLYhceU/видео.htmlsi=XhDo0nCLuxXWIAlD

    That was really a great restoration. And also how did you do all the rigging, because I looked really complicated.

    • @k41lesprit90
      @k41lesprit90 Год назад

      Yes, the FD rig is complicated. I learned a lot from forums.sailinganarchy.com , search the archives for FD rigging. Also you can look at other classes like 505 and 470 for rigging techniques.

      @@k41lesprit90 thanks for the advice. I was looking at some pictures and I had quite a hard time finding them. But i did manage to find them nonetheless. I also found your album and a few photos of the restoration on sailing anarchy. Also some pictures from aeolos were very helpful. But there were some elastic cords at the back of the boat. I'm guessing they are for spinnaker and also are they on both sides or just on one?

    • @k41lesprit90
      @k41lesprit90 Год назад

      @@nihčenobody The elastic is for taking up the loose ends of lines. Most FDs have double sided control for shrouds, lowers, genoa halyard, cunningham, spin pole lift. That can lead to a big pile of lines so the elastic attached to the ends is for just sucking it all away neatly.

      @nihčenobody Год назад

      @@k41lesprit90 thanks for the info, would you mind clarifying what ropes you have on elastic cords. i figured out by now that two elastic cords on each side are for bringing trapeze back into place (but have no idea for which lines other 10 are for.) I also looked at rigging for 470. And I'm sorry for bothering you, I just can't find rigging guides anywhere.

    Incredible rebuild! So you've taken a wooden fd and added loads of carbon? Or was this an early kevlar/glasfiber composite hull?

    • @k41lesprit90
      @k41lesprit90 2 года назад

      The hull was glass/balsa/glass with wood frames and decks, so it was close to state of the art in the early seventies. I had to remove the saturated balsa core of the hull and replace with divinycell, then rebuild the interior to more recent standards.

      Thank you so much. I didn't expect to take it as far as I did. Feature creep and unknown problems at the beginning led to doing more than I expected, but I enjoyed the journey and love sailing it now. Good luck with yours!

    nice boat! still own her? I'm considering buying a 1967 K-41. any advice for what to look out for?

    • @k41lesprit90
      @k41lesprit90 6 лет назад

      Thanks, yes we still have her. The hull is really nicely made. Ours is extremely fair and still has the original gel coat. There is a nice structure connecting the shroud tangs to the mast base, so no issues there. Our deck was redone in 1982, and is still going strong, but a previous owner must have spent a lot on that. The prop shaft is unsupported after it exits the hull. Our prop was about 5-6" behind the cutlass bearing causing extra wear. I guess it had been like this for 47 years, but I made a strut out of G10 that I shaped into a foil and glassed a cutlass to it just in front of the folding prop. You can see it in the underwater shots. I had the rudder out last year, and it looked/sounded fine. I replaced the standing rigging a couple of years ago, it may have been original. A lot depends on the maintenance over the years. I'm not aware of any specific issues of the K41 build.

    What was your route? I was trying to figure out the location as I watched. We are looking at a few weeks starting from Zittles Marina and heading north later in the summer.

      Starting point is Boston Harbor, Olympia,WA. Then some pictures in Budd Inlet. At 1:00 that is sailing just off Boston Harbor. Then back in Budd inlet 2:50. At 5:03 that is McMicken State Park. 5:18 is just off Zittels with Devil's Head and Anderson Island in the background. Then back to our summer moorage in Boston Harbor. My older videos show footage from a trip north to the San Juan and Gulf Islands.
