As the war progressed, Japan lost most of it's experienced pilots to help train these recruits, fuel and ammunition for aircraft was scarce and most aircraft carriers were destroyed. And as the threat of the American invasion of the Japanese mainland (Which luckily never came) was coming closer most of these students were instead moved into Special attack units and were told that the highest honour of life is to die for their Emperor. Refusing to would mean that they and their families would forever be shamed and they usually weren't even allowed to. Aircraft converted to kamikaze suicide vehicles were usually stripped of their guns, and only fueled for a one-way mission. In other cases it was a desperation tactic used by regular pilots who for example ran out of ammunition or wanted to desperately cause damage. In the first scene it's the latter. Here Lieutenant Commander Arima was depicted. He is one of the - if not the first person to use this tactic setting an example for the rest of the Imperial Japanese Navy and Army Alot of these pilots did not have much choice.
