This 3-inch LURE gets HALIBUT to bite EVERYWHERE I use it!
This morning session started REALLY slow. It took me nearly a full hour to finally find fish that wanted to bite. The croaker and corbina wanted the casting jig. Then, top end the session on a high note, a nice 20" or so California halibut tackled my 3" halibut magnet. YES! I have caught a halibut in every spot I have fished this lure in! it REALLY works!
You can see (and maybe buy 👍) all the products I use and recommend on my Storefront on our website (link below) where I have added all the rods, reels, lures, waders, backpacks, lure-making materials, baits, and more. Click on the link below and have a look. Super easy and all in 1 spot for you!

I FINALY got a BASS to bite the SPRAY-PAINTED spoon!
Просмотров 819 часов назад
The pattern on an old metal spoon I had was wearing off. I think I found it in the rocks at a jetty or at a garage sale. Something like that. Anyways, I spray-painted it a similar pattern as my jerkbaits. I knew it SHOULD work, but hadn't given it an honest effort. This session I decided I would use my normal 3.5" ripper swimbait first to get on the board and then give the remaining part of my ...

    What time of the year was this filmed? Guy on your right is in shorts and a t-shirt wading in the water.

    • @StartFishingToday
      @StartFishingToday 41 минуту назад

      Recent. Water is 57-58 and the air was 68 degrees. We both also surf year-round, so those temps are fine. Water barely coming up to our knees is not what we would consider "wader-worthy". We'd both have waders on if we were taking on waves or going in deeper water.

      I don't. Remember, you only see what I allow you to see. You don't see the 1,000s of casts made without anything caught. That said, I have fished the same areas nearly every single day (sometimes multiple times per day) for MANY years. Just like anything in life - the more you do something over and over and over again, it becomes habitual. I KNOW where and when and what to use during any given conditions that will give me the best opportunity to be successful. You can get lucky sometimes, but that runs out. 👍

      You can use the plaster to mold it, just like I did the one in the video. just make sure that you seal the mold with resin first. Then, make sure to use a non fast-evaporating oil before injecting the plastic. I would use cooking spray to get into that small crevice that the tail will have in the mold from the lure. If you don't, the hardened plastic won't come out and will break off in the crevice.

      If you have the $, perfect ur design using plaster/silicone. Once you have exactly what you want, I recommend have someone CAD the design, then have that deisgn 3d printed and cast into an aluminum mold OR, CNC it into an aluminum block. 100% perfect w/no chance of the mold breaking.@bryanwright9221

    • @StartFishingToday
      @StartFishingToday 9 дней назад

      I decided not to do a video on the resin mold. It's much more costly compared to plaster. Basically, you take the lure you want to mold, glue it to the bottom of a plastic tray (you can't set it on the top like the plaster - it will sink), mix the fiberglass resin properly (buy at home depot, lowes or any home improvement store), pour and let sit for a few hours and done. I'd let cure for a couple days before use. It is VERY durable compared to basic plaster. BUT, as long as you seal the mold and take care of the plaster mold, it will last forever too - at a much lower cost compared to the resin.

      @StartFishingToday how would you be able to make an aluminum mold?

    • @StartFishingToday
      @StartFishingToday 9 дней назад

      There are 3 ways. Way 1: Buy the molds from Barlow's Tackle for about $50: barlowstackle.com/Do-It-Round-Head-Jig-Molds-Barb-Collar--P194/?afmc=v0 . They have MANY other molds to choose form as well. Way2: You have to have the CAD file [of the jighead you want to mold] for CNC machine to laser cut into an aluminum block. Way 3: You can build hard body baits (wood most likely) on your own, get casting sand and sink your wood blank into the sand. Then you need a steel (or metal material with higher melting point than aluminum) frame to put the sand mold into. Lastly, you need a melting pot that will heat up to at least 1,221 degrees F (melting point of aluminum). Option 2 is a LOT of work.

      Wherever the bait/food source is at. Also depends on the structure near the shore. For the perch to come in close, there needs to be large enough swell to move the sand around and make troughs on the high tides. Then they come in closer to eat easy meals, like sandworms.

      @@StartFishingToday Traditionally that's where they are BUT the question is why aren't they there. Many (most) NorCal surf perch have ben in a skunk for a long time. So bait, swell, waves and structure are not the "normal" WHY do you think that is "so"????

    • @StartFishingToday
      @StartFishingToday 25 дней назад

      I can only speak for myself and what I'm experiencing. That said, in late Nov 2022 and early Dec 2023, we had MASSIVE swells come through, completely rearranging the topography of our shorelines. These came during king tides and washed a TON of sand away. This created HUGE troughs, both outside (first wave break) and nearshore (reform and 2nd/erd break). It is when these large structures were available is when I started catching all the perch (big ones too). So there's that. Also, fish arent on a set schedule. They don't show up just because it' a certain date or time of the month. Mother nature will ALWAYS dictate when fish show up. Same with the offshore/pelagic fishery. 2 years ago, the dorado showed up with never-before-seen volumes to SoCal. It was the best thing I've ever experienced here locally. This year...NOTHING. Can't put a date on mother nature. She happens when she happens...@theoldsurffisher1943

    whats the best time fish that spot incoming high tide?

    • @StartFishingToday
      @StartFishingToday 26 дней назад

      The best time is when the fish are there and decide to bite. The tide only dictates what rod and lure weight I need. If the fish are far out and the tide is higher, I need my longer, heavier rod to throw the heaver lure to get where the fish are. If the tide is lower, I can scale down as I can wade out farther and therefore don't need to cast out as far.

    • @StartFishingToday
      @StartFishingToday 28 дней назад

      The clear coat finish isn't 100% needed, but it sure makes a huge difference. I actually published a new video for this showing that I use 5-minute epoxy for the finish. It's much easier and more permanent application. No more spraying oil on the mold as a separating agent. Every plastic comes out easy and shiny.

      If you decide NOT to finish with the epoxy, you can use any cooking spray and reapply every couple pours. The cheap stuff is fine. @@enrique-uz8qx

    I wonder if they can be used for some kind of animal feed instead of fertilizer? The meat would spoil so quickly so maybe if someone was running like a black soldier fly farm for chicken feed, that might be good.

    • @StartFishingToday
      @StartFishingToday Месяц назад

      The fact that you asked that question shows everyone that you're not as smart as you think you are. There isn't a single item any of us buys that wasn't derived from something prior. Nothing is original. Even huge name brands in any industry white labels their products to other companies. This is how industries and companies grow. If a company only sells at one price point, they'll fail. So, they acquire or create other brands under their umbrella to sell at lower/higher price points to cover all income classes. Take GM for example. They make Cadillac, GMC and Chevrolet (upper class to lower class income targets). Wonderful brand pistachios makes the Kirkland pistachios at Costco. Everything is copied to scale business and capture all income classes/levels and highest revenue possible. Also, if a company is dumb enough not to go through the proper process of global patent, trademark and/or copyright, they deserve to be copied. Not smart business. So don't come on here an make comments about how many snakes or copycats there are out there when I guarantee you happily pay for those knock-offs instead of paying outrageous amounts for name-brand items just to hold your head high. We all save money by purchasing white label items - many of which you probably don't even know you're buying.

      Okay, so here's my take on these. First, I haven't tried them in the water yet. So, I can't claim pros/cons on them yet. 2nd, I have not seen them sold for anything bigger than 1/4oz. 3rd, if you look closely in the video, when I put the 1/4oz in the swimbait, it made a VERY big hole in the top of the swimbait. Not good at all. 4th, I too wanted to have it in 1/2oz, BUT, now that I see how the 1/4oz fit into the 3" swimbait, not so much. 5th, there are hover rigs that are on the 45° jig hooks (instead of the 90° used in the video). I do not see or have a DO-IT mold for that. The 45° jig allows you to push in from the head of the swimbait - thus not creating a big hole in the plastic lure as with the 90° version. All that said, you could do it, albeit you would need a much larger 45° jig hook and probably 5-6" swimbait, by making your own through trial and error with a plaster mold. If you watch to the end of the video, I show a thumbnail preview for "How to make JIGHEADS/LEADHEADS with PLASTER of Paris!!!" That will get you there 👍

    Really nice video and quite informative. I also make my own jig heads, one thing I would caution you for is....Get a small hand clamp or use channel locks to hold that mold. Your hand is way too close to the extremely hot lead. If it leaks out of the mold, your hand is toast. It can also splatter and burn the hands, wrist etc. Even if you wore gloves it's better than nothing. Always do something safely... especially when younger kids might be watching. Keep pouring!

    No clay necessary. Use plaster 1st half of mold spraying pam on sinkers as a separating agent. Always mix plaster by adding it to water/ not water to plaster. Use vibration from any number of sources to removes air bubbles.

    • @StartFishingToday
      @StartFishingToday Месяц назад

      The clay is 100% necessary. Without the clay, you can't set the weight with the wire properly w/out it sinking into the plaster. You need the clay to guarantee as close to 50/50 split as possible with the plaster. I also 100% guarantee that there is nothing wrong with pouring the water into the plaster...
