I remember the fountain and cafe and antenna lol time flies half of fresney place is closed down now and the once great market is non existent pretty much sad cuz i live here
I'm from Grimsby. I moved away in 1988 to find work. Every time I go back, something has been boarded up, closed down, or a friend from the past has moved on. Aren't I the cheerful Charlie? 😂
why’s this make me sad 😂
Yes I know what you mean x
Do you love Roblox
Looking good, Justin and team are great. Hopefully you’re going to have a nice holiday
Enjoyed this although I moved away in 1975
Thanks for watching
Great video Will. I got kicked out the Baton Rouge on my hen night but it was worth it.
Haha I loved the Baton
Certainly a memory packed reminder of some of the places lost to a sign of the times. This vlog brought back the fun times of drinking & working in pubs (not at the same time..) The Clee Park was closed due to subsidence. Singers & groups used to play there weekly with Edna Keyes, Cardie, Blues Brothers & Country Western bands. Thanks for the reminder of how old I must be to remember nearly all of the places mentioned.
Thanks for the feedback, I’m glad you enjoyed the trip down memory lane & thanks for watching
A sad reminder that all the shops in the current Freshney Place would have fitted within the old Riverhead Centre given that the part facing on to Victoria Street has so much empty space. RIP to Binns, BHS, Lawson & Stockdale, Woolworths, half of Boots, WH Smith and countless shoe and clothing shops. Now the big draw is Poundland, TK Max and Primark. I confess I still use Millets. Many thanks for refreshing my old memories.
How very true. Thankyou for watching
My dad use to deliver coal to Hewitts brewery and my grandad who lived in church street had a stables and delivered beer to the pubs.
Wow , it’s fascinating to hear little stories such as these. Thanks for watching
My memories also. Missing from your list would be the White Bear (Freeman St.), Cross Keys (High St. Cleethorpes), The Hitching Rail, The Oberon, The Oil Millers Arms (there a picture in the Duke of Wellington) and many more. Somewhere, I have a picture of The Imperial on Victoria St. It was opposite what is now the St. Andrews hospice shop. I look forward to further videos. Many thanks.
Glad you enjoyed my video & many thanks for watching
Proof, if any were needed, of how we have been let down by successive governments and our own council by lack of investment and regeneration. Criminal for a large town and it's inhabitants to be treated so badly by elected officials.
The architecture and art of the original precinct wins for me
Most definitely. Thanks for watching
brought back some good memories when shopping was fun great video
Thankyou for watching
Nice trip down memory lane mate. Quite sad that so many pubs have gone. Remember going to see Bing Beales at the Market Hotel. Couldn't get in the door. What the hell do young people do nowadays?
Precisely.. thankyou for watching
Aww lovely family ❤
Winstons was actually in the Yarborough Hotel, where Wetherspoons is, i think i spent my 20s in there 😂, and i think The Bank was still Yarborough Vaults then
great memories cant believe that some ofmy old haunts have gone completely i remember seeing roxy music at the winter gardens
Interesting, if sad, video. There’s always a certain amount of change in pubs etc, my old man used to talk about others that closed in the 50s-70s, and replaced by new pubs in new developments. Some of those you showed were those new ones c1970. Some came and went quicker (the Art Bar on Alexandra Rd) some came and are still there (Tale of Two). But overall there seems a lot fewer - same all over the country. Definitely loads fewer clubs to go to (1/2 doz in Clee alone in early 80s). Bunny’s, Clouds & JDs (you mentioned), the Flam, the Pier and(last but not least 😁) the Barcelona.
Very true.. thanks for watching
The Friar Tuck! I remember it. We used to call it 'The Try a Fuck'.
Good old days
Wimpy was near Woolworths in the precinct,I worked in Mister Minute shoe repairs and key cutting opposite the friar tuck pub.

Sad seeing what a shell it has become, that’s what happens when you charge extortionate rents like they do. Used to be so much better especially the Thursday late night Xmas shopping.
Makes me angry that we have lost so much in this town it's been done on porpoise and this practice still continues today Grimsby council are to blame Grimsby had Hart and sole once we as residents have been made to accept how it is but we shouldn't the people need to take charge because the council has and is slowly stripping are identities away!!!
Councils have no real power over pubs closing. They’re private businesses subject to how the economy is doing. Obviously affected by things central government does but local government hasn’t got the power or money to do anything.
White knight my fav freemo pub. Great place so many great people many of whom no longer with us.
I've been to butlins I went to minehead
What a brilliant video so many memories my family where very involved with the Albion, 60's onwards
Thankyou so much for watching, I’m glad you enjoyed the video
The late 2000's took a lot from us. I wonder what's next. 🤔☹
They certainly did.. thanks for watching
Great video mate, brought back some great memories thanks
Glad you enjoyed it
Some cracking nights in "The Humber" and Albion
Some good nights in some of these pubs 😀
Great video !!!! A famous writer Thomas Wolfe wrote in 1940 , You Can Never Go Home Again " . When I first read that I thought he was writing nonsense but now I realise how right he was ! The Grimsby and Cleethorpes I knew in 1980 is long gone and I can never go home to there as it does not exist any more ? I wonder why the powers that be wanted to close everything down and often replace with dreary flats like The Winter Gardens and The Lifeboat ??? Perhaps they were miseries who hated people having a good time ? I have n't been in the area for 44 years as I live on the other side of the world but what puzzles me is WHY ? Why was so little creativity and style and artistry used to make changes ! The,"Tattersall Castle" Humber ferry is still moored on the Thames but "The Lincoln Castle" at Grimsby was just scrapped ??? Who were THESE people who made this place what it is TODAY ??? "The Ghost By The Coast" ???
Great words & very true
It’s businesses that make these decisions Paul, not councils (if that’s who you mean by’powers that be’). Pubs have been losing business for decades so they close down. Councils can only approve planning applications put to them, they don’t have the money to invest in new ventures themselves. Their powers have been slashed by central government for decades too. It’s a shame that places like the Gardens went, but at the end of the day it was private property and the owners had other options for their money than keep it maintained.
epic.
Thanks for watching
Left the area but what a great nostalgic view of Gy when I were a lad and into my 20s ,shocking to see after watching other vids of all the lost history /businesses due to overall decline ...Tokyo Joe's with the prodigy was a highlight, Carl cox ,man what a time to be alive ,best friendships and after parties ever ,now some sadly departed ,strange the older we get the more fondly we look to our past ,a yearning for better times I suppose ,post covid world seems so much more unreal and depressive, chin up eh ,thanks for the memories 👍
Great comments, thanks for watching pal
Fantastic memories. Thanks 😊
Thanks for watching
Looks good dude
Thanks brother
This seems so sad.
I guess it’s the nostalgia thing
Hey Sir i have a question when you have time thanks.
Yeah sure let’s hear it.
@@SuperDuperWillSaxby thanks. Would you trade the resurrection mask for my WMP Halloween 6 mask Sir?
@@prestonmoore2868 sorry mate I’m really happy with it & it took me ages to rehaul it
@@SuperDuperWillSaxby yes Sir😊👍🏻 i understand
Feel old now, my friend, hope you're keeping well 👍
Haha we’re all getting older, just gotta keep pushing forward… hope you’re well too
No mention of the barge! No Gulliver's! Yeah, you can't fit everything in but these where the iconic venues. The White Hart as well, the place for metal fans. The Exchange for alternative DJs and Flamingos by the boating lake.
As stated these are venues I personally used or remember . The Barge as never really changed to be honest , thanks for watching Amigo
@@SuperDuperWillSaxby No problem. The barge was used by students and was not for everyone. Still nice to remember Grimsby's past. Thanks for the video. I met at least 5 of my girlfriends at Clouds.
@solidstateresistor2485 haha result
I was just wondering about the Barge. Some of the best beer in Grimsby
I used to live round the corner from The Market Hotel many years ago. Me and my other half used to do our shopping in the morning at the weekend and we'd then often pop into this pub for a couple before heading home for the rest of the day. Seeing the Friar Tuck. Park Lane and the Strip along the Riverhead brought back some memories.
I’m glad you enjoyed the video & thankyou for watching
gd video mate, thanks for upload
Cheers, thanks for watching
wow awesome video mate
Thankyou so much
Fantastic video 😊👍
Thankyou
I went in all these pubs in my late teens , great times, unfortunate our useless council and deprivation due the fishing industry going down , has left our town in a shit state and made it the most deprived area , especially East marsh, in the U.K. I hate Grimsby now.
Enjoyed your Video - thanks but Music too loud and spoils commentary.
Thanks for watching, I loved your work in Karate Kid
2:38 where did you find this image of Grimsby
All the photos used in the video are available on google
WHY do we need a cinema?all cinemas are struggling 😊
If indeed it ever gets built.. there doesn’t seem to be any urgency with the building work so far
it shows how down hill its gone but in the year 2050 you will be looking back at the 2024 precinct as to how good it was, i remember people saying in the 1990's how bad the precinct is
Very true.. thanks for watching
Most of this was after my time... 🥸
Yes this is mostly 80s & 90s
