    Generally speaking, if you don't look crazy, dirty, or like a burden then people who see you and have enough time to make a decision will likely stop. There are more people than you think that are willing to stop, but sometimes it's just not the ideal time/place. If you want to learn people's motivation for picking you up, ask them. I'm 36, and stopped hitchhiking 8 years ago after I met my partner. But before that, I covered roughly 35,000km across Canada by hitchhiking alone over the span of 10 years. I went as far west as Fernie BC and to the most eastern tip of Canada, Cape Spear and everywhere in between. Some notes about my experience and tips: 1. Rarely did I ever have to wait more than an hour to get a ride. 2. I often got picked up by people doing long hauls. 3. I don't drink/do drugs and never accepted a ride from someone who was clearly under the influence. My health and safety was more important than getting a ride. 4. I always asked people why they picked me up. It ranged from: god told me to, someone to talk to/keep me awake, share the chore of driving, wanted weed/drugs, straight up out of kindness, paying it forward because they used to hitchhike, recognized me as someone they knew, and the list goes on and on. 5. The oldest person was 86 6. The youngest person was 20 7. It was mostly men that stopped but I did have 3 solo women pick me up, and there were about 6 couples. 8. I always picked a spot just outside of a city center, usually by an on-ramp or a spot with a long stretch and a gas station in which people were not driving top speed. Make sure the people have about 100m to stop. People need to see you and have enough time to make a decision. 9. Don't make them wait if they stop! Run to their car and greet them. Tell them who you are, where you're going and why. That gives them plenty of info to make a decision and feel comfortable with you. It also lets them start a conversation once you get in the vehicle. 10. You don't have to accept every ride that comes your way. Sometimes you'll get dropped off in a bad spot and getting a ride from there will be much harder. Always make sure you understand where you will be dropped off. 11. If people don't see a bag, they are skeptical. If they see 2+ bags they are skeptical or don't have space. Travel light, and make sure everything you have can fit with you on your seat or between your legs. (I know because I always ask. I always had one 50-80L backpack and it always came up in conversation why they DIDNT pick up someone they saw before me) 12. Always have some camping gear and be ready to sleep where you end up. 13. Watch the weather reports. I got caught out in the open in a wild thunderstorm one time in which the winds were so strong I could barely walk. I was terrified I was going to get eaten by a tornado. Also, having to sleep in below freezing weather if you're not prepared is dangerous so know what you're getting into and be prepared. I could go on for a long time about this. It was a big part of my life. Anywho, good luck out there!

    Nice music. I like the piano. You did the right thing not putting yourself on the Police registry. They should be treated like big tech. They are benefitting form the control they gain from having your information. Anyone in that position would have to wonder... WHY would they want your information in that situation? Why would they insist on it??

  • @jumpinjohnnyruss

    You say you were Branden in Brandon... but were you randy in Randy? Is that what he was expecting when he offered you the ride?

    Why does the sign show backwards if it's really your own video?

  • @jumpinjohnnyruss
    @jumpinjohnnyruss 27 дней назад

    Haha you may not have to worry about people being too f'ed up to pick you up. A little is fine. A moderate amount on a straight road is usually fine, especially with someone there to keep their wits about them. If they're just cross-eyed drunk or something, they probably don't have the wherewithal to slow down within 500 metres of you.

  • @jumpinjohnnyruss
    @jumpinjohnnyruss 27 дней назад

    0:08 This is a classic example of survivorship bias. Still, you're probably right. On one hand, it's possible that the advent of surveillance-everywhere-all-the-time technology has scared off a lot of serial killers; on the other hand, maybe big tech is on their side. You'll know that big tech is trying to make it seem otherwise if this comment is visible to you.

      Windows' "snipping tool" sucks fucking ass, by the way. I tried to screengrab my own comment (for its pure genius), and it would pretend to be recording video, but then not have the video turn up anywhere.

    I first did this on the Big Island, everyone told me it was normal. Eventually this woman stopped and let me in. I meant to ask if she planned to live in Hawaii for the rest of her life but it came out "do you plan to die here?" That had to sound so crazy.
