      Why? It's inaccurate. Only the Americans think you can differentiate macarons by spelling. She criticises the British for referring to different items as macaroons. Ironic because they're just different styles of what the French themselves refer to all as macarons. So one word for all, the French and British agree on that. The French are familiar with which city each style comes from, and therefore refer to them as eg macaron d'Amiens (from Amiens) or macaron de Nancy etc. The British don't because those aren't their cities and they're not as familiar with all the styles. Differentiating by spelling is an American idea, and can only cover TWO styles though the French have more. The Americans ought to be careful telling the Brits they don't know much about their neighbours across just 20 miles of water or a tunnel, a leading holiday destination and a commonly taught foreign language in British schools. They can mostly pronounce 'croissant' for a start, and some can even manage 'pain aux raisins'!

    As someone from the UK I feel it should be pointed out that a macaroon and a coconut macaroon are different things. A macaroon is a biscuit(cookie) made from ground nuts, sugar and beaten egg whites. Traditionally ground almonds exactly like a macaron just not sandwiched together. That is why some of us refer to macarons as macaroons.

    • @artgreen6915
      @artgreen6915 3 месяца назад

      This. The almond flavour of a macaron but a texture closer to a coconut macaroon. An almond macaroon. The almond one is nearly soft, almost chewy. It is a distinct item, quite recognisable. Edit: further research suggests this video is misleading and it's the Americans who don't know what they're talking about. France has lots of types of macaron. Macaroon is just a different spelling in Britain but referring to them all by one main word is exactly what the French do! The French tend to add 'of [town of origin]' to distinguish the styles, and as far as I can see it's the macaron de Nancy which was most common in British home cooking. Interest in the fancier Parisian style has grown.

    Macaron is just the French spelling (and pronunciation) of Macaroon. What you call Macaron and Macaroon in the USA are just 2 of many versions of Macarons found across Europe - you say the people from the UK don't know what they are talking about...well if you think the Split half-shells with the jam/ganache filling are the only true French macarons, pls look up Macaron D'Alsace (which are similar to what you call Macaroons), Macaron D'Amiens... The reason why Americans think they are different things is the combined result of the timing of when each was introduced and cultural bias....the coconut round mound cookie got brought over in the late 19th / early 20th century by early immigrants, was seen as plain, and the pronunciation got Anglicized ....the Split-Shell Lauree Macaron (which was only introduced in France around 1930) came to the US in the 2nd half of the 20th century as an exotic imported confectionery, by which time it had become fashionable to pronounce things in the original French manner...

      @@leannepoon1998 Oh, hi! Can't come up with a subject for a "difference of" video from the top of my head, but maybe something about commonly used food additives could be a good one? Maybe even a series? Also, if you guys want to make more cooking guide type videos. One thing I've always wondered are the different kinds of sauce/soup bases used around the world and how you could make them at home. Maybe videos of specific famous/well-known dishes and their history?

    • @artgreen6915
      @artgreen6915 2 месяца назад

      Sorry but it isn't 'beyond helpful'. Strictly speaking it's less than helpful because it's inaccurate! Macaroon is just an anglicisation of macaron. An American idea two types are distinguished between the French and the anglicisation is (in Europe) for the birds because there are more than two types of macaron in France. The French differentiate by region: Macaron de [name of city]. British people using one word for the lot is just what the French do, except can you really blame the British for not knowing all the styles by their French city to add on to the name? Evidently the Americans don't.
