Periphery - Wildfire [DRUM COVER]
In case you haven't noticed I kinda like Periphery, like, a lot and Matt Halpern is probably my biggest inspiration in the prog metal world.
Needless to say I'm really excited by the upcoming album and working on this cover was a blast ! It was also a real challenge, it's a long and complex piece of drumming that really pushed my playing abilities.
Some parts are still a bit sloppy (that jazz bridge took me way out of my comfort zone) but I'm very pleased with the result and I hope you'll like it too ! Enjoy !

I'm usually not a huge Muse fan but I gotta admit I've been very positively surprised by this new single. Nothing too fancy about the drum part though playing it tight and with energy proved to be more challenging than I anticipated ! It's also a great opportunity to use my PDP 14*8" snare for that THICC snare sound on the verses.

The weather here is absolutely terrible, so I figured I'd try to summon Summer with a silly skate-punk song by the most nonsensical Australian band ever. Gojira is one of my favorite bands ever and Mario's drumming has been a huge influence for me. I was so stoked with their latest single that I just had to cover it ! The audio is recorded in one take, I juste added two camera angles to make the video more dynamic.

Just messing around with that sick groove, playing to electronic music is a really cool exercice to improve timing ! I also uploaded the video to Facebook but it was removed without any notice, I think it falls under fair use as I'm playing my own interpretation of the song and do not monetize, if anyone has an explanation please let me know !

Greyhaven is one of those bands that are highly underrated IMHO. I discovered them last year with their "Empty Black" album, and i've been listening to it on repeat ever since. Salut, depuis le temps que cette vidéo date... j'ai constaté que ce piano est en bon état. Il n'a pas souvent joué. Les marteaux ne sont pas usés, les étouffoirs sont juste à régler. Les chevilles... ben tu verras cela à l'accordage.* En plus que c'est une très bonne marque.
Zuttt je pensais qu'il y aurait une suite... 🥲 J'espère que sa restauration avance tout en même bien !

Pas de suite ? Malheureusement il faut probablement recheviller le piano voir changer les cordes. Les cordes filées éventuellement conservable après un nettoyage mais si les aiguës oxydées c'est fichu. Tout ce qui concerne la mécanique et les réglages cela ne peut pas être fait en tant qu'amateur.

This is awesome, dude! I love Matt aswell, he really brought groove into metal and he's really creative when it comes to writing drumparts for Periphery. I only wish that the mix had abit more clarity, it's abit hard to desipher what's happening when you're playing toms/kick mainly (imo). However, that's just a minor critique. Other than that I think you did a stellar job :D. This song aint exactly easy (and kinda long :p). Keep 'em coming, you got yourself a new sub :)

Do you only need the two toms?
Matt has 3 toms on the album version (from what Nolly says in his Wildfire mix masterclass) but I didn't hear that when I learnt the song so my version only has 2 🤷♂️

Out of curiosity, how many hours of practicing this song alone did it take you to get it so accurate and clean?
I'm a huge fan of the band so it actually started with hours of casually listening to the song, by then I mostly knew it by ear. For the trickier parts I transcribed to midi and/or slowed the song down to better get what was going on, that took a few hours as well. Then of course I needed to actually put it all together. And I spent a few hours writing the jazz bridge section. So yeah, I could not tell you precisely but I reckon at least 20-30 hours divided over the course of a month or so.
What cymbals were you using on the jazz section? sounded amazing
An old 20" Zildjian ride cymbal, I bought it used and the markings are gone so I can't tell you what exact model, but I love it. The other one is a Zultan CAZ 20", cheap brand but sounds great

Je suis aussi musicien mais pas pianiste de conservatoire, mais comme toi je recherche à nouveau aussi un piano droit après un numérique haut de gamme (Mais sans vie) qui ne vaut pas un acoustique. Super vidéo déjà pour ton partage sur la découverte d'un des plus beau instrument jamais inventé. Un truc, je joue très souvent avec la sourdine aussi, beaucoup plus inspirant et feutré. Avec les vibrations qui traversent le corp, c'est tellement bon. Bonne vie musicale avec ton très beau Pleyel chargé d'histoire.
