Really cool place, really cool system. I know it's not perfect, but I'm very impressed with the speed and determination behind building out the Metro do Porto. A huge thank you again to Manuel Vilares and Paulo Pinho for sharing their expertise.
See you in the next video - it'll be a special one :^)

The full (ish) story of how #Lima got Línea 1. I went to #Peru for the Inca Trail and couldn't pass up the opportunity to talk about Lima's #Metro system 🤓 - because it's surprisingly good for a city with such informal transit. Lima's challenges with the Metro are shared by plenty of other South American cities - and beyond - making for what might be the most interesting procurement story so fa...

How Washington DC fixed their Metro’s biggest problem
Просмотров 394 тыс.10 месяцев назад
A Silver Line appreciation video :^) I visited my friend in #DC recently and was surprised to find a direct airport rail link, since many US cities don’t have that. I was even more surprised that it took over an hour, which takes this line into distances far beyond the scope of most metro systems.⁄ So I looked more into the Silver Line, and I’m pretty impressed. I know it was over budget, somew...
How Duke killed an LRT and what that means for transit in the US
Просмотров 20 тыс.10 месяцев назад
It's all about project financing - again 🤷 The Durham-Orange Light Rail is one of the more high-profile #transit failures in recent memory (or maybe not, depending on how much social interaction you get). The headlines were pretty dramatic, talking about how some poor transit agency (GoTriangle) spent $100m just for #Duke University to kill the whole thing… … which is partly true, but it obscur...

Where you get funding matters - especially for #infrastructure. Much shorter video this time, but the story was too relevant to this channel to not make a video about it. It's just one of many examples throughout history of how the details of #procurement (in this case financing) impact what infrastructure gets built, which in turn dictates economic destiny. And once again: this isn't to say th...
Uber for buses? What went wrong with “microtransit”
Просмотров 11 тыс.Год назад
On-demand transit doesn't make money - but maybe it’s not supposed to. For a few years in the mid 2010s, on-demand / flexible / demand-responsive / uber for buses / wow that's a lot of names / #microtransit seemed like the perfect solution to declining service and ridership across the US. No need for tough decisions on zoning or #urbanplanning - "Uber for buses" would make use of existing infra...
How to build transit: America’s forgotten streetcars can save us
Просмотров 21 тыс.Год назад
They can teach us a thing or two about funding. I've felt for a long time that America's historic #streetcars deserve more attention, especially when considering the current struggles to build adequate transit in the US and Canada. It's amazing how such comprehensive systems emerged on their own, largely driven by private actors who weren't receiving massive subsidies. Multiply that across pret...
Can buses replace domestic flights?

How trains can replace planes: What are air-rail alliances?
Просмотров 8 тыс.2 года назад
Think flying from London to New York then connecting smoothly onto a train into Philadelphia - basically airlines #codesharing with train operators. At its core, the concept calls for the seamless integration of air and rail so that each mode can be used for the most appropriate distance, especially using trains to replace #shorthaul / domestic flights. It's pretty clear that the status quo of ...

Hello, Very interesting video ! Where can I find the video about “positive externalities” ? Thank you !
Take notes, bandung
did u sneak in GO Transit bilevels at 11:40? lmaoooo
I appreciate this video. I didn’t know there was as much opposition to trying to build this project. I think many in the US tend to assume there’s just a lot more consensus than there was. I do think one of the great things that Europe has going for it is that there is a lot of very good public infrastructure in place and working and proving itself every day. And it’s easy for other Europeans to travel a short distance and experience that and that is a great argument against a lot of the Nasers when you actually have the real thing up and running and working. This is of course, my understanding of it, which I’m sure is limited and missing a lot of nuance. Thanks for the video. It was very informative.
Ottawa politicians need to make a trip to Porto. Our light rail project has been a a struggle with everything about costs and not about the utility of the system.
as a Denverite and ubanist of European extraction, the city frustrates me in myriad ways every day, but Downtown would be an order of magnitude worse without the 16th Street Mall and the MallRide.
Build a train to Dulles, but cancel the WMATA bus that goes out to BWI. BRIBES. CORRUPTION> INCOMPETENCE
the biggest problem is that all the Metro employees are black, which means, snotty, lazy, incompetent
I love that this guy clearly knows baseball haha
so why didn`t Toronto do this for king street instead of the wimpy change nothing except slap some signs up and hope drivers listen
you want a lost transit system have I got a challenge for you the Etobicoke RT
4:40 animation of the transit at Vaughan Metropolitan center in Canada cool had no idea that existed love the transit services there but too much car
I totally agree with your view on this transit issue. Also, myself being disabled. That brings many other topics up. Like funds towards healthy update, no transportation that funding is also available. All of you really paid for that was just to supply the demand. That was just an idea?
minorities stopping progress?? imagine my shock
Brilliant video! Just proves the point - we can just build things. Subscribed! We will watch your career with great interest. 😁 🚅
Why didn't George Town get a metro line? You can get to the metro to Rosslyn across the river or you can go to Dupont Circle but not to George Town (which has a University which has been there since the 1800).
First time watching this channel. I really love that the video is jam-packed with information and still remain concise. The quips and jokes are not out of place and help with the flow of the video. Well done!
Glad you enjoyed - it's tough to keep it concise!
I like particularly that you mentioned the "externalities", meaning positive impacts to the economy and the challenges this means, in terms of communication/PR ; oftentimes, we hear about managing welfare such as public transit with the eyes of a management accountant, whereas a holistic view is much more accurate and useful.
Its hard to conceive of any city of a million people without a metro or light rail system.
Cause there stuck in a loop!
I live in Oak Park, a suburb just west of the City. Going in - a breeze. I can take the ike, the metra, or green and blue lines. However, if I want to go to Evanston it takes FOREVER since there are no highways or trains getting there. There needs to be a north-south option!
Busses were always inferior for getting around a city compared to trolleys but the switch was intentional to force cities to become car centric. Which is one of the worst things to happen to American cities.
I was truly interested in watching the video until 1:39 with you pulling the victim card. Pathetic. Do better.
What are you upset about?🤨
@CamarasOpinion I put a timestamp on it. Are you incapable of clicking on it?
@Carl_Jr I clearly saw it. But I'm just confused on how that offended you?¿
@@CamarasOpinion Do you have reading comprehension problems?
@Carl_Jr By the way, you don't have to answer my question if it makes you feel uncomfortable.😐
very well done congratulations from Calgary Canada where 3 levels of government are playing soccer with ideas & built nothing. Porto is a beautiful city I visited several times
Because the money gets stolen by those entrusted to do the right thing with it.
Did you adjust your figures for inflation? It's not really relevant to compare transit costs/km on projects that are built decades apart.
Definitely, labelled top left and based on the methodology in the Wickens report
The GOAT never misses and this is no exception
cheaper and more thoughtfully and more scientifically built than the US metro, how the heck??? Also Sapporo, japan has almost the same layout of Metro as these city, lived there a few year, this is better than normal MRT
As someone from NW Ontario (Thunder Bay), it's nice to see Porter's survival and quick expansion. It's the only airline that flies out of here multiple times a day and at a reasonable price, too.
Detroit
I hope one day you return to Portugal to do a video about the Metro in Coimbra. It's a story spanning over 30 years, nothing is finished or working yet, and includes some of the most questionable decisions ever.
I am a farmer in a rural state. I don't really much care about internal city issues. What I really want is trains that will connect cities to cities. If I have to go to Chicago, for example, to connect to a train to visit my grandfather in Philadelphia or I have to get to San Francisco to visit my aunt, I have to depend on buses to even get to the tracks. There shouldn't be such gaps between say Oklahoma City and the Southwest Chief, or Boise and literally anything in every direction. Any European will point out the absurdity of this.
Eventually...when all the money is used up to buy votes there is not enough left to fix things.
It sounds like Chicago needs orbital light rail 🚈
You should look up Richmond va, the entire bus system is free to ride
Giving the units in "X number of things Americans like"i s beating a dead horse that already looked like homogenized goop a decade ago.
CTA already HAD a N-S elevated train. It ran from Hermitage and Moorman St and ran straight south to Ashland. They obviously removed it.
I heard Leap shutdown because they took out the ADA Ramp in the front of the bus. Like, they bought the buses with the ramps... and then purposely took them out. So, they provided a service that could not accommodate all riders. ADA Violation. Instead of fixing the problem, just shut down. Other reason too, but I heard the city came down hard over the missing ramps.
General ineptitude? Go yourself. You don't know about Chicago.
This video is my introduction to your channel. I like what I’m seeing. But I suggest working on your avatar branding. The yellow zoomed-out jet with moose antlers looks less like a jet with antlers and more like a sour/pinched face. That doesn’t strike a positive/friendly image, in my opinion.
Your profile picture doesn't, either. Maybe you should take your own advice. The brain in your photo implies the comment is written by someone having one. You clearly missed the memo. They have more views and subs than you do.

Chicago is the best
Inventing issues that aren’t really there. Should be focused on larger issues like getting rid of the expressways
