The Creating, Living and Making Projects (CLAMP) Podcast - a weekly show hosted by Adam Mackey, Grant Alexander, and Jessy Ratfink. (formerly co-hosted by Morley Kert)
Every week, your hosts delve into all the aspects of the maker life. So, join us every week while we talk about creating, living and making (and potentially too many puns about clamps).

The Penultimate CLAMP
It's the penultimate episode of CLAMP! Join us as we discuss how we feel about the penultimate part of things. Also Jessy might have hit a new record for how many times she can say the f-word.

Talking About AI with Audrey Love aka @audreyObscura
So.... what did Mr Savage say?!
I am guessing he didn't get the request 😂😂
I'm with Grant, lets keep getting closer to 200 without ever making it there. In that weird parasocial way, it feels like I am losing three friends 😢
Hahaha I'm sure Grant was just joking😂 but we feel like we are loosing lots of friends too! But we can keep being friends without the podcast
Saving one of the best for last!
Thanks James!
My favourite episode was the one i was on 😂
Lol! That's a good one
I had a nice time listening to your stories 👍
Thank you! 😁
Well, 200 is a great innings guys. Being a new dad I'm amazed you two fathers were able to keep the schedule for so long.
Appreciate it man! It has been a fun ride and worth every minute 😁
Well damn, I just found you all a few month back and have really enjoyed the content and dynamic between the three of you. I really appreciate all the time and effort you all have put into making the podcast, and wish the best for you in the future!
Thank you! And you can always start back at the beginning and listen to 4 years of content 😁😁
What the what?!?! No way, I truly did not expect to win and I am so truly honored! So many great entries! And I actually don't have any ISOtunes and have always wanted some! So pumped, thanks again for putting on such a fun challenge and of course the podcast every week!!!
Yay! Awesome to hear that you don't have any isotunes yet, I love mine. Hit me (Grant) on DM with your shirt size and address details
How big was Jessie's drinks bottle . Grants glasses really suit him
Thanks! (From Grant)
Hi from Ukraine. This is my first time watching your podcast, but I can confidently say that I found it interesting. Now I know what I will watch during my rest time 🙂 Many thanks to Jessy, Adam, and Grant for the incredible feedback about my project. I'm afraid the next project I am currently making will be much crazier, too much motivation 😂
Happy to have you listen/watch the podcast. My (Grant) grandfather was born in Ukraine, so I am happy to hear of the connection. Good luck with your next project!
I always look forward to Mondays because I can listen to you all on the way to work.
thanks! We appreciate you taking us along for the ride!
I found sharpening easier than it looks... probably cause I bought the expensive Veritas jig 😅 Harder than it looks is drilling vertical holes on angled surfaces on the drill press... that was a real pain.
I wish I had bought that jig! I got something from Bridge City and I am not a fan. Drilling into angled surfaces requires a commentary angled drill guide or else it is doomed to fail!
This was a lot of fun!
Thanks for joining us!
Children...can we add children 😂
Hahah maybe just a little barrier, but as they get older the barrier gets bigger 😂😂
'promosm'
What is that?
The Chapman Master set is an essential part of my tool collection for working on industrial machines. I regret not being aware of them and buying a set decades ago when I was a professional auto mechanic. We have purchased and given several sets to our student intern employees and to the more mechanically-inclined amongst our friends and family. People who use them for gun-smithing or archery love them. So glad that quality tools are still being made in the USA!
That's awesome to hear! I knew as soon as I saw a set I wanted one. You can really see the quality in the sets! Cheers, Grant
I am also a fan of locally made things, especially if they are a small maker or company. It is harder and harder to find,
Is it harder and harder to find or is it just so much easier to find the flood of cheap import stuff?
@@CLAMPcastHarder. The manufacturing industry here, like most of the western world, has moved offshore. Old Australian tool brands even if still Aussie owned, are mostly made OS. Now, that's not to say there is not good quality stuff available, but finding a non-perishable item that carries the "Made in Australia" tag is very rare.
I feel like manufacturing is coming back in a lot of ways, especially after covid and the supply chain issues. I also think that consumers are way more conscious today of how overseas manufacturing often has more drawbacks now than before. The price we are saving is often not worth it when we have to replace our stuff so frequently.
Hey there just stumbled on this video from my RUclips recommendations and I'd like to say, great insights into metal health and the journey we face while looking for personal encouragement and hope that I talk alot about in my personal hope encouragement and inspiration channel, to find joy and peace again. Liked and subscribed, will be looking forward to more videos.
Thanks! I hope people find hope and encouragement from your channel. Good luck!
There is certainly a 'type' of person who can work at the morgue... I think you'd fit in well Jessy 😅
🤣 I’ll take that as a compliment to my awkwardness
I got another Clampmandation!! Thanks Grant!!
It was a cool workbench worthy of a clampmendation! 🗜️🗜️🗜️
I've often thought of a mobile workshop setup in the wagon, making while in the road and travelling around, making random stuff from junk and leaving it in odd places for people to find :P
If I had a job that required me to travel in my car I would totally do that! - Grant
Thanks for the mention, Jessy ☺️ Really appreciate it! Yep, Austrian, living in the UK and indeed no grand prize won yet 😆 but I never expected to win one anyway, there are so many great projects out there 😉
You will get there soon! Keep up the good work!
@@CLAMPcast thanks! :)
Well, that was an interesting ride, well done for persevering and congrats on another year of CLAMP! Jesse has been a great addition to the team and getting out a pod almost every week was a great achievement. See you in... well, this year :P
Interesting ride indeed! Thanks for always listening and commenting. We gotta get you back on again!
@@CLAMPcast chat about super cuts 😅
Adam's backdrop is looking a lot cooler these days. I'm going to take the legal approach here. If you can give opinion evidence in a court of law on a subject, you are an expert in that subject. In Australia this can either be because you are an accredited expert in your field with formal recognition from a peak education or administrative body, or, and here is the fun one, the court deems you an expert based on your experience, education and training. This is called the Expert Evidence law and allows, within the scope of your expertise, you to say things in court that coming from a lay person would be inadmissible.
So only the courts can make me an expert 😂😂
@@CLAMPcast well if you can fairly judge you'd be ALLOWED to make an opinion on something in a court, close enough :P
What a great guest Char was, anyone trying to make wood-education more accessible gets a big tick in my book. I met Ryan via the Melbourne Tool Company IG Live this week. Nice fella.
Ryan? Or Evan? 🤣
@@CLAMPcast well both, we had a secret backroom we were all chatting in even though spilt up on stage as it were
You guys and your secrets. When will I be cool enough 🤣
@@CLAMPcast well I've spent $1000 on their tools so... That seems to be the price of admission 😅
Getting people to jump platforms is impossible. I think it just goes to show apart from general visibility and awareness, there is little point wasting time sharing on multiple platforms.
Unless you are interested in getting the benefits of whatever that platform offers (ie on Facebook Grant makes a lot more money than he ever did on RUclips)
Great job Keep it going Char 💜❤️💜❤️
She is great!
I used AI for my latest thumbnail and it seems to be doing well but otherwise haven't touched it too much. Wifey uses it for content creation at work in marketing all the time. It is and will be a handy tool going forward but oh so open to abuse.
Interesting that particular video was never shown to me 🤣🤣
@@CLAMPcast YT knows you have the attention span of a toddler 🤣🤣
Hahah
Yeah I've no particular love of old tools. I usually just want something to work, not a restoration project, but they are pretty cool when done well.
Would you pay the same price for an old tool (that had been restored) as a new tool?
@@CLAMPcast certainly if it did the same job just as well or better. But good old tools tend to be more expensive than their modern equivalents around here.
It's always hard to do a modern equivalent as often the only thing available back then was top of the line and now we have offerings across the board. Just look at table saws and the range you can get now!
Team Self Checkout ✅
And here I thought you were a smart person 😘
I don't plan much in terms of videos. I plan projects, usually on SketchUp, and plan the progress development of my shop, but when it comes to filming I just go with the flow and fix it in post :P Like Adam, I've gotten a lot better at _not_ filming, which cuts down a lot of work. Even my Voice Overs are usually 1 take while watching the completed video :P
Sounds like experience has paid off for you. Do you think you could benefit from a shot list? Or would you deviate too much?
Lols mini-Grant. Very cool concept for an episode. Hosting was better than usual too for some reason. 🤣🤣
Hahahah thanks James 😜- Grant
If you only knew how many weird ideas I didn’t follow through on! 🤣🤣
But you when you follow through on an idea you really commit! 🤣
I don't think I've experienced Ad Hominem attacks on YT... but then I am a middle age cis white male doing woodwork so... oh wait! No, I take that back. I've been attacked for lack of beard hahahahaha
I have ad hominem attacked you before for sure! lol
Yeah we've got nothing like this down here. The little wood shows don't compare and our biggest one got basically put out of business by Covid. Would be a great thing to experience but I think it may take me a while to get there ;)
What about the one that Diresta and Mark Dainer were recently at?
@@CLAMPcast that was more an attempt to be Maker Fair, not really hands on, more shopping focused
Dainer looked hands on 🤣
@@CLAMPcast he was the 'entertainment' 🤣
Good luck Adam, just remember as long as it is fun you are winning on RUclips. Keep it enjoyable for yourself and things will grow from there.
Totally, great advice!
I still use the same free opensource editing software I always have, Shotcut. It does what i need it to and though it has advanced features I don't tend to use them much. I only recently started post-editing audio with audacity and that has been a worthwhile improvement. Thumbnails get basic Photoshop once overs but it is masking and levels mostly, not alterations. Over edting just takes too long :P
Overediting does take too long! I agree with you
Same, Grant. I'm listening to YT and podcasts at 1.75x speed the majority of the time. It messes with me now when I forget to change it and everything's normal speed. Music though I'm flipping back to 1x.
Some music sounds better at 1.5x 🤣🤣give it a try sometime and let me know what you think
Blue Ringed Octopus... especially when tourists think it is pretty and pick it up 🦘😂

Thanks for being awesome! Grant
Love you guys! A: The nautilus is pretty sick. 😅
The Nautilus or a nautilus 🤣
I think we could have simplified this to ages rather than school years with 3 competing systems 🤣🤣
Hey now, being unnecessarily complex is just how we wanted it to be 🤣🤣
Pretty much everything in my shop has a home, and new things got to the top of the list of adding one if they don't... this usually works...usually :P However mid-project the place can be a mess and if it is really bad and I'm coming back the next day stuff gets to stay out and the car can park on the street for a bit :P
I feel like space constraints can be a good motivator for being organized!
Hey all, great episode organization is definitely a tuff one to get started abd everything figured out to where you have room for new tools, but really enjoyed this episode and thanks for the shout out and mention and hopefully I can get back to the #BYERSBUMP 😊
Thanks man! The Byers bump always made my day - Grant
You got my number, and at least I'm on the same time zone :P This was fun, we should make Grant sick and talk computer games more oftern hahaha
Hey now, I never told them that I wouldn't talk about video games 🤣🤣 - Grant
How about an EPRB? ;)
What's EPRB?
@@CLAMPcast Emergency Personnel Response Beacon 😉 GPS locator, can be spotted anywhere in the world
How much fun would that be 🤣🤣
Looks like this one was 1 second too long and YT didn’t mark it as a short. We’ve all done it!
Sometimes we do it to see if it works better as a long one 🤣
I think even without mindfulness in the shop it can be preventative. I think it will be a very interesting area of study to formally try and measure and collate what many have known all along. Hobby Workshops are Happy Places.
I used to work in a hobby shop and always sold where things for hobbies and the amount of frustrated people that I saw trying to do a happy thing for themselves and it not working out would be an equally interesting thing to try and formally study.
Interesting topic. We just had a very similar conversation on our show, and talked about Woodshop Nerdery as well. Great minds and all that. 😄
Great minds indeed! I'll have to check out your show 😁
Cheers for the Clampmendation Grant! Are you selling out if your content is all based around paid commission work recently? :P I think you are not a sellout until you change your messaging based on what you've been given. I've done a lot of paid spots and videos now, and a decent chunk of the tools I use in every build I didn't pay for. In particular, I've been called out as Kreg brand ambassador for selling out to team blue and "Big pocket hole" :P But my relationship with the supplier all started because I genuinely bought, enjoyed, reviewed and used Kreg gear in my shop for years and had success with my Kreg based videos. So while I now just get sent whatever Kreg stuff I want, I also at no stage have been directed or coerced into saying nice things about them. So I don't regard that as selling out, I regard that as a successful business deal. If I was suddenly offered a huge cheque from ArmorTool to swap all my stuff to red and say Kreg sucks I think that is a different story. Cash for forced positive comments against what you believe, or particularly negative comments in contradiction to what you previously touted is where I'd start to call out the behavior.
Paid commission work isn't selling out, it's just selling! You may have done paid spots in your videos, but they are always disclosed and you even sh!t on stuff if it doesn't work well. i don't think you would ever say kreg sucks, but I do think with a big enough paycheck we would all consider swapping the colour of our tools. 🤣
