      Not before you plunge the blade down. You can still see it till the blade is about half way down, by then, you don’t really need to see it! Likely depends on the make of the saw though. For this evo one, it’s fine. 👍🏻

    I don't know how to thank you enough for this genius solution! I just took the duct tape and in less than 5 minutes did this amazing modification to my Evolution miter saw. Man it makes so much difference! Like over 90% of saw dust is getting perfectly collected by my vac. No tools needed, just a few pieces of duct tape. Simple and extremely effective. Thank you so much!!!

    Got to agree with other comments: you definitely gave it a fair trial! Of course, none of these things come ultra sharp straight out of the box, but by the look on your face - just like me at the gym,, grunting through the last few reps of a bench press - it doesn't exactly look like a joy to use. I did consider the Banggood (Woodpecker knockoff) as it gets some reasonable reviews, but even that comes in at around £80. Frankly, you'd be better off buying a trim router. If you can't stretch to the Makita, there is always the Katzu - among others - that can be had for as little as £30, already a fiver cheaper than the Saker. I don't know, but woodworking in your garage, or shed should be a relaxing, pleasurable experience. For me, it's a podcast, audiobook, or music. Then, it is just a case of plodding away at whatever the current project is. The Saker doofer looked like torture, and, as you quite rightly pointed out, putting a chamfer or arris on a project usually comes at the end. So, with timber - even MDF - prices going through the roof, why would you want to spend hours, and good money on a project, only to make a dog's dinner of it 98% in? If you don't have a trim router, and only want to take off the sharp edge, just use a sanding block, or sponge, or buy a Stanley or Record block plane. Either can be had for the same price as the Saker. That being said, thanks for taking the time to share your awful experience with this terrible looking tool.

      Thanks for your detailed comment 👍🏻. I’m being polite about the saker in the video as they sent it to me free to review! But I totally agree with what you’ve said there, it’s a gimmick of a tool anyway, whether made well and sold expensive, or made poorly like this one. The Makita palm router is awesome, one of the most used tools in my shop. And agree you can’t beat record and Stanley planes, well restored and well sharpened they are amazing tools. I have an ever growing collection!

    how did you attach the tape to the stock vac tube. I have a Sheppach slidimg mitre. It is held on by two small screws but little else and there is nowhere to put the duct tape too. I have tried making mock ups using cardboard but had very little success. ANy advice would be really apreciated.

    I was going to try this but had no idea how much 50p was, so I almost gave up on it. Seriously though, I thought of doing the same thing, as most of the collector videos only work for 90° cuts, and they appear overly complicated for the task at hand. I was also thinking of adding a semi-flexible curtain to either side of the blade guard to really channel the airflow into the funnel. I'll post back on how it works when I try that add-on. Thanks for reminding us that simpler can be better. Cheers from the US!

    Great idea, great video. Nicely explained and demonstrated. Simple solutions are the best. My current separator made from ash separator (metal drum) is too small (15L) and collapsed occasionally... I had to reinforce it with a wooden cross inside, but I was afraid that the larger barrel would collapse more easily. Then this would be my solution to the issue :) Cheers!

  • @rafalmag
    @rafalmag Год назад

    I second most of the tips, with one exception. Notice that when run next to a fence in one direction it will be pulled toward the fence, and when run in opposite direction it will pull away. So when guided by the flat side (or the baseplate with flat side) when it would grab wood more aggressively it would twist and move away anyway, as the end of the baseplate would be a pivot point. The solution to that is to run the router next to a fence by the round side - then it would just twist in place, as the force would pull it toward the fence. Second advantage is when routing inside corners (eg. juice groove on the cutting board) - it is much easier to make a turn when run the round side meets the corner of the template. Cheers!

      Thanks for your comment, interesting explanation on the push away effect. 👍🏼 I definitely wouldn’t use this for an inside router template! 😂 The message here is don’t be afraid to change your baseplate to a custom one that is optimised for the job you’re doing. I have lots of them for different jobs! 👍🏼

    This was very timely for me as I'm setting up my mitre saw and have been disappointed at how much dust is still generated even with a dust collector. I plan on fabricating something like what you've done but using 1/16" polyurethane which will have a similar flexibility but a bit more firmness (and I have some already). Thanks for a great idea.

      Totally. I really wanted to like it! 😂 It has bigger problems than just the sharpness. It’s not uncommon to have to sharpen new chisels etc, but the fact that the paint comes off onto your work and mine had a burr that scored out a trench - totally unacceptable in my view.

    • @dovetailsnotnails8090
      @dovetailsnotnails8090 2 года назад

      Hi Dave, thanks for commenting. The laser line is still fully visible with the mod in place. The line only gets obscured once you’ve started to lower the blade to make the cut. So since you only require the laser when lining up, this has not been an issue…on this model at least. If it’s an problem on your saw, you can easily bend and fold the tape up and out of the way to line up, then bend it back again to make the cut. 👍🏼
