    Gaudate Sunday,! Rejoice! Not the first Mass at St Mary's Hobart with a liturgy truly 'sublime'; today outstanding, (a mon avis), embellished by the orchestral brilliance of friends en ensemble on cello and violins, including our own very gifted Joe; Gussy for a stunning impromptu Psalm delivery; above all the combined creative genius and vision of Ben Mackey and Miffy - 'watch this space'; as well as a gorgeous Gibbon's Motet solo from Rhonda; together with the hard Yakka of a diehard and dedicated team of choristers! Lest the very stones of the edifice cry out instead, Thankyou! and Joy!

    It is possible to hold gratitude for our imported priests at the same time as being frustrated beyond endurance. We know that hymns, homilies and hospitality are key to engaging with newcomers and for slowing the drift away from the Church of the semi-casual regulars. We can’t evangelise if no one can understand the homily. We can’t collaborate if someone comes from a culture of priestly autocracy, of being incapable of listening to a woman’s contribution at meetings, of expectation that volunteers are plentiful and therefore easily replaceable, and being beneath notice if you have a service role. We must be grateful to have a priest, any priest. But if they do more harm than good for the mission of evangelisation, must we be grateful for that too?

    • @marysexton7283
      @marysexton7283 2 года назад

      My lived experience is in direct contrast to the above. I welcome the dignity, reverence and care taken by our Priests, from all backgrounds, local or otherwise, as we come together at the Consecration to offer Jesus to his Father, or as we pray with our dying, or nurture our young through the Sacraments etc. The peripheral trappings of parish life are just that and should never be mistaken as being our fundamental purpose or gauge of success. The Holy Spirit will move hearts and minds regardless of our perceived injustices or worries about language or cultural barriers. Each one of us, by our Baptism, is actually called to evangelisation. In my personal experience, the Priests discussed above are generally, in fact, MUCH loved and embraced by their communities in Tasmania and our faith is nourished and enriched by their presence.

      @@marysexton7283 Perhaps you haven't had to work closely with them, and tried to get answers or decisions from them. It can look a lot rosier from a non-collaborative position than it actually is. Yes we need them, they have good generous hearts, but if the most common question after Mass is 'What did he say?' then the parish is not getting the Word of God broken open for them, and the parish's ability to evangelise is severely compromised. Yes, the laity can personally witness their faith to others, but ultimately you want to bring them to Jesus, and the pathway is through kerygma first, and sacrament later. And to bring them to Jesus (and the Church) you need the support of effective liturgical preaching. If it isn't there, all your efforts are fruitless. How can we continue to accept this situation, and at the same time say that the primary mission of the Church is to evangelise?? If it is the primary mission, we have to be seriously practical about it, and somewhat ruthlessly remove/reduce known obstacles to that mission and diligently seek interim solutions that work. Sadly no amount of homily preparation (which they do), and no amount of desire to bring the Word of God to the parish (which they all have!) can overcome the communication barrier. They must be just as frustrated as we are. How can we let this impasse continue? Yet every preacher considers their own preaching to be above excellent, and better than everyone else's. So how do we make continuous improvement our cultural norm for liturgical preaching? Do we need a TV game show called 'Australia's got preaching' to encourage it to happen?

    • @marysexton7283

      In all charity, Catherine, St Francis Xavier, Mother Teresa of Calcutta, St Damien of Molokai and so many other great missionaries, despite their earthly skin colour and somewhat limited foreign language skills, were exemplary in their respective Spiritual missions in foreign lands, to bring Christ to the people of God, to evangelise in overseas countries devoid of resources but with a tremendous faith that God had called them and was with them. May our faith and charity increase towards those called to minister to us, remembering that we, too, are called to the mission God has for each and every one of us. I pray that you and I are welcomed more often than not in that undertaking.

      @@marysexton7283 An important discussion. These priests from overseas are committed to the Church but of course it's the Church as they experienced it. And the reality is that many people don't understand everything they say and have great difficulty engaging with them. I knew one who strongly objected to being told how to send a fax. A simple example of how their expectations disconnect form our normality. My local priest invited his head of order to speak to our Masses. This visitor was much more easily understood than our priest who had been here for more than a decade. It is clear from that he saw no need to adapt his speech. He just talk and we had to adapt our hearing. The real question behind this topic is why do we not have local vocations. Why should we be taking the best of overseas priests from their struggling communities where they would be at home, serving those who nurtured them? We have the problem, importing priest is a Band-Aid. Also we are sending many seminarians to Rome and America; why because Bishops don't trust the local seminaries to give the right accent to our local clergy. This lack of trust in our own people (individuals and culture in general) is at the heart of the disconnect between the Church universal and the local Church. It is the reverse of mission. We have been baptized, the faith has been brought to this land, but the church does not nourish us in our own context. Australians are leaving the practice because they find no connection with their attempt to find a living God in our churches. Our church has become increasingly foreign to our people and importing priests is proof of it.

    Thanks to the Archbishop for his overview of the day I'm a bit concerned though in his reference to the emergence of 'fault lines...people and groups with different points of view' Room for discernment here for all members, rather than expressing anxiety. Shades of hierarchical protectionism also in the assertion that , because it's a rule of the universal church, women may not preach in church....if such a rule flies in the face of gender equity, maybe it's time to challenge the rule.....besides, the rule outlaws the great gift that women of great faith, and who have the qualifications and the capacity to preach inspiringly ?
